    Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

It's understandably gone very quiet at St Mary's.

You wonder where Southampton's confidence will be at - there's only so many knockbacks you can take, after all.

Even this early into a season.

    What a ball that is.

That shows you how momentum can change if you can finish. Man Utd will have felt a burst of confidence from not conceding the penalty.

From the resulting corner Christian Eriksen goes short to Bruno Fernandes, who delivers a trademark sumptuous ball which is guided home by the head of Matthijs de Ligt.

It's the Dutchman's first goal for Manchester United - it's come very much against the run of play and is a big sucker-punch for Southampton and Russell Martin.

Cameron Archer's penalty miss has been very costly.

  4. GREAT SAVE!published at 13:05 British Summer Time 14 September

    Southampton 0-0 Man Utd

The hosts are almost instantly punished for that penalty miss.

Joshua Zirkzee shoots low from outside the box - it's heading right for the corner but Aaron Ramsdale does very well to tip it behind for a corner.

    Southampton 0-0 Man Utd

You could feel the nerves in the stadium.

Southampton have had the domination in the first half and you have to score at least one goal - that was the opportunity.

Andre Onana saves low to his right!

It's a pretty poor penalty from Southampton's Cameron Archer, who you'd normally back in that situation, but Onana guesses correctly and does well to push the ball out of danger.

A huge reprieve for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United.

  7. 'Terrific play from the youngster'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 14 September

Tyler Dibling has done it a few times taking Diogo Dalot on. Terrific play from the youngster.

  8. PENALTY TO SOUTHAMPTONpublished at 31 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Man Utd

Diogo Dalot brings down Southampton debutant Tyler Dibling and that's a stonewall penalty.

Sloppy would be an understatement. Oh dear.

It looks like Cameron Archer will take it.

In response, Amad Diallo dives in off the right but sees his shot deflected - taking the sting out of it.

Southampton are easy on the eye and have looked good here, but are they at risk of becoming all style and no substance?

  10. 'A free-header'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 14 September

Lesley Ugochukwu needed to do better.

The impressive Yukinari Sugawara puts in a free-kick and on-loan Chelsea man Lesley Ugochukwu heads over when completely unmarked in the box.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 26 mins

Kobbie Mainoo comes off second-best in a midfield battle with Southampton's Lesley Ugochukwu and reacts by desperately handling the ball.

The result? A yellow card for the Manchester United man.

Erik ten Hag looks onImage source, Reuters

Yet another match where the Man Utd players clearly don’t understand what Ten Hag wants. At one point it has to stop and we'll move on I guess.

    James

Still waiting for Man Utd to turn up, the threat is coming from Saints. Man Utd are poor.

    Southampton 0-0 Man Utd

Southampton full-back Yukinari Sugawara gets away from Diogo Dalot far too easily and his cross-shot has to be scrambled clear by Matthijs de Ligt.

Dalot fun going forward, not so fun when running towards his own goal.

Japan international Sugawara has time to whip in another cross but it drifts out for a Manchester United goal kick.

    Southampton 0-0 Man Utd

This game has been very watchable so far.

At one end Kyle Walker-Peters jinks past a defender for Southampton but can't find a pass, and then Bruno Fernandes drags a shot wide as Manchester United break.

Man Utd win the ball back and in two or three passes they are on top of Southampton's goal.

Saints have struggled with quick play around the box, Man Utd have got in with a straight ball - that's a worry for Southampton.

Man Utd are currently a cup-winning top-eight team, but fans think they are still 90's Utd. Fed up with hearing, "Not being in title race isn't good enough for Utd" - nope! Reality is Man Utd are not good enough for a title race.

Amad Diallo is beginning to look lively for the visitors.

He loves to cut inside, but he's helped Manchester United win their first corner - which results in Noussair Mazraoui thumping straight down the throat of Aaron Ramsdale.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 15 mins

Joshua Zirkzee in action with Southampton's Yukinari Sugawara and Aaron RamsdaleImage source, Reuters

Southampton's Aaron Ramsdale is called into action for the first time, and he does well to thwart Joshua Zirkzee.

It's a slick move from Manchester United in fairness - Lisandro Martinez's incisive forward pass got things moving, and it resulted in Dutchman Zirkzee sliding to try to divert the ball in.

But he couldn't get enough power on it.
