Exeter City are pretty much on the proverbial beach with two weeks of the season remaining.

A 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers last weekend ensured the Grecians are all but safe from what would have been an unlikely relegation battle with a 10-point buffer over the Gas, while any potential play-off challenge has long since drifted over the horizon.

Another victory today for Gary Caldwell's side will guarantee Exeter a fourth consecutive season in League One and they could yet still record their highest finish in the table (13th) since returning in 2022-23.

They have lost just two of their previous 11 games (W4 D5), which came against promotion-chasing Wrexham and Stockport, and will be keen to end the campaign on a high.

If you needed any reminder of how important Burton Albion's game at Exeter is in about 15 minutes, just take a look at this.

The Brewers could move three points clear of Bristol Rovers with a win and they also boast a superior goal difference at this late stage of the season.

The Gas travel to Wrexham later today, who are chasing automatic promotion with Wycombe hot on their heels, while Stockport and Charlton aren't much further behind.

Reading, Leyton Orient, Bolton and Huddersfield are all still scrapping it out for the the final play-off spot as well.

Just a fair bit to play for, then...

Birmingham City have already wrapped up the League One title and there is plenty more that could be decided as early as today.

The race for the second automatic promotion spot won't reach a conclusion until Monday at the earliest, but Stockport and Charlton could both secure a play-off berth this afternoon.

County will be guaranteed a top-six finish if:

    • They beat Peterborough.
    • Or if Leyton Orient and Bolton both fail to win.

Meanwhile, the Addicks can do so if:

    • They beat Northampton.
    • Or they draw and Orient and Bolton both fail to win.
    • Or they lose, Leyton Orient and Bolton also both lose and Huddersfield fail to win.

At the bottom, Shrewsbury and Cambridge are both in danger of being relegated today.

Salop are 12 points adrift of safety and will be relegated today unless:

    • They win against Wigan.
    • Burton and Bristol Rovers both lose.

The U's are seven points from safety and will go down today only if:

    • They lose at Huddersfield and either Burton or Bristol Rovers win.

Some very sad news to bring you today.

Former Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson has died at the age of 36 after an ongoing battle with cancer.

Thompson spent six years with the Dale after coming up through the Manchester United youth academy and also had spells at Tranmere, Bury and Carlisle before his retirement in 2019.

"We first knew Joe primarily as a talented footballer, but we would soon grow to adore his loving, infectious personality," Rochdale said, external.

"He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch. His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story.

"Above all of that, Joe was a loving husband to Chantelle and an incredible father to Thailula and Athena Rae.

"Our thoughts are with Joe's family and friends at this incredibly sad time."
