Carlisle shock Reading to reach FA Cup second round

National League high-flyers Carlisle launched a sensational late fightback from 2-0 down to send League One Reading tumbling out of the FA Cup in extra time.

Goals from Lewis Wing and Mark O'Mahony looked to have given Leam Richardson a comfortable win in his first game as Reading manager following Noel Hunt's departure.

But second-half substitute Regan Linney struck twice in stoppage-time, including a 98th-minute equaliser.

Linney then completed his unlikely hat-trick four minutes into the first period of extra time to cap a stunning turnaround for Mark Hughes' men.

Reading, who sit 19th in League One, looked to be cruising against the fifth-tier side, as Wing tucked home in the 32nd minute and substitute O'Mahony doubled the lead in the 68th minute with a close-range finish.

Hughes responded to Reading's second by immediately introducing top scorer Linney who turned the game on the head with goals in the third and eighth minute of stoppage-time.

Both were from cleanly-struck shots, though home keeper Jack Stevens should have done better to save his second effort.

Linney then made it 14 goals for the season in extra time from another well-drilled effort after a quick Carlisle break.

Reading produced little in response as Richardson, booked during normal time for protesting too strongly to referee Ruebyn Ricardo, was unable to spark a revival at his new home.
