The phrase Happy New Season was mentioned by some of the media at Liverpool this morning and there was already a big difference for this campaign with a new manager in Arne Slot in charge of the Reds.

One thing that is very much the same, though, is the Anfield side’s squad with no signings having been made so far this summer.

This was one of the main talking points on a sunny day at the club’s training ground but, if there was any concern about no new arrivals from Slot, he did a good job of hiding it.

The Dutchman was calm and composed when questioned about the issue and was philosophical about the Reds missing out on Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Instead, Slot again mentioned the quality of the squad his predecessor Jurgen Klopp left behind, while adding work was still being done to strengthen his squad.

Slot had a relaxed presence in his first Premier League news conference but there was also a business-like air about him as he prepares for his first Premier League game in charge with the trip to newly promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday at 12:30 BST.

  2. 'Liverpool still have stacks of quality in their squad'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 16 August

Alan Shearer on what is to come next at Liverpool under Arne Slot.

Liverpool finished third last time and I don't see them dropping out of the Champions League places now Arne Slot is in charge.

Jurgen Klopp is an incredibly tough act to follow but they still have stacks of quality in their squad and plenty of options in forward positions. They have not signed anyone yet this summer but I'd be amazed if that is still the case come the end of this month.

We will have to wait and see how Slot gets them playing, at what tempo, and also what happens to some of their established stars.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all now into the last year of their contracts and, while Trent is only 25, Van Dijk is 33 and Salah is 32.

  4. 'It has been a slow market but not through a lack of trying'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 16 August

Leicester v Tottenham (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

In response to how the club has handled the summer transfer window so far, Leicester boss Steve Cooper added: "Every season you want to strengthen. Every club will be the same. We are still going through that process. The club is working together and the communication lines have been great. It has been a slow market but it's not been through a lack of trying.

"Once I realised that there wouldn't be any [more] reinforcements ahead of Monday night, I put it to one side to focus on that [the game]. I'm focused on the guys and that is all I can control."

  5. Emery on Archer's reported move to Southamptonpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 16 August

West Ham v Aston Villa (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery on the future of Cameron Archer, who was sold to Sheffield United last season for £18m but returned after the Blades' relegation triggered a clause in his contract.

Archer is now reportedly on the verge of a £17m move to Southampton, external.

Emery said: "We sold him but the decision was not 100% in this situation thinking he was leaving completely.

"At the end of the season we signed him again because we were under his control to try to use his capacity. We did it but he is young and we are thinking he needs to play more and more and try to continue developing himself.

"Now the decision is he is close to leaving – not completely. In case he is leaving we are thinking he needs to do his work individually and try to develop himself because he we cannot assure him to play big minutes with us."

  6. Daka out 'for a few months' and Vardy out 'for a little while'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 16 August

Leicester v Tottenham (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Steve Cooper has confirmed strikers Patson Daka and Jamie Vardy will not be available to face Tottenham on Monday night.

Daka will be "out for a few months" after having an operation on an ankle injury he picked up against RC Lens in pre-season. Vardy is closer to returning but Cooper said he will still be missing "for a little while".

Tom Cannon will be Steve Cooper's only available senior striker going into the season opener, but the manager says there is "no hiding" from the situation: "It's not the perfect situation going into this game. There's no point hiding from that. It's about adapting the game plan to make sure we do have a threat.

"What I do know is that we have enough players to make a difference."

  9. 'I am not sure how they will shape up'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 16 August

Brentford v Crystal Palace (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Chris Sutton predictions column banner for BBC Sport

England striker Ivan Toney is still at Brentford and who knows how that will pan out.

They will be fine if Toney does leave, because they carried a threat for so long without him last season anyway, and I like the balance in their team.

Crystal Palace ended last season really well under Oliver Glasner but I am not sure how they will shape up this time.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has been at the Olympics, Michael Olise has left, while Marc Guehi and Joachim Anderesen could be sold as well - so we could be seeing a very different Palace.

We will have to wait to see how things settle down for both sides but, in the meantime, this is another game with draw written all over it.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

  10. 'We plan with Guehi'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 16 August

Brentford v Crystal Palace (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Marc Guehi, who is linked with a move to Newcastle: "Marc trained today and we talked together. I've had no other information. I'll have to look at my bank account and see if anything came in!

"We plan with Marc. He's our player and our captain, I can't tell you anything else.

"As long as no one tells me they will leave or the club tells me someone will leave, then we will work with them every day and prepare the team."

  11. 43 players and countingpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

Finally, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on having an oversized squad: "At the moment, if I start to think I have 43 players, it is not a good thing.

"Paul and Laurence [the sporting directors] are in charge of finding solutions for these players, not me."

  12. Neto 'completely fit'published at 14:11 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on new signing Pedro Neto: "His physical condition is good. The only problem with Pedro is he has only been here for two or three days and needs to understand the way we want to play but he is completely fit."

  13. 'I am very happy with what we've got'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 16 August

Brentford v Crystal Palace (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank on what signings he'd like to make in the transfer window: "I am very happy with what we've got, overall. What I've found out is, it is difficult, say you want a left winger, then to get the right one, at the right level, at the right time is sometimes difficult. So of course if we only have one winger and we need four, then of course, we need to buy. You’ve got to get the best possible player that can make the squad stronger."

  14. Franca expected to be out for weekspublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 16 August

Brentford v Crystal Palace (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner gave a fitness update ahead of Sunday's match: "[The team news] looks pretty good. All players are fit, all players are available – just [Matheus] Franca [is not].

“After his injury, he trained with us, and unfortunately he fractured his rib again so he will be out for the next weeks.

“But all other players are fit and trained the whole week, and can start and play at Brentford.”

  15. 'We are trying to do everything we can to improve'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 16 August

Brentford v Crystal Palace (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank on making improvements to the injuries the Bees had last season: "The injuries that happened, we were never happy with or ok with, because there was a lot of contact injuries, a lot of unlucky injuries.

"We are trying to do everything we can to improve. A lot of things we did well last year that, the soft tissue injuries, the hamstring injuries and so on. We had the fewest in the league [injuries], that’s very impressive but we just try to every stone to see if there’s something that we can improve."

  16. Toney and Wissa available for Sundaypublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 16 August

Brentford v Crystal Palace (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney: "This transfer window, there has been so much talk about Ivan. I think everyone will be a bit disappointed that he is still here after the first of September, because you can’t ask that question again. There’s a January transfer window, but let's see. The thing we can focus on is that he trained well and he is available for Sunday."

On Yoane Wissa: "He's also trained well, he looks sharp and he is also available for Sunday."

  17. Maresca asks for time and patiencepublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

In response to whether he can be the first of the last five Chelsea managers to win his opening game, Enzo Maresca said: "Worst case scenario it will be six! We are going to try and do our best to win games.

"For me, the big difference between us, in this moment, and other teams is that it is just a matter of time. Some clubs work with a manger for eight years, so with time we will close the gap and hopefully that can happen soon."

On whether that is him asking for time: "Yes. Sometimes it sounds like an excuse from managers and I know timing in football is difficult, but in our case with the process and ideas we will close the gap."

"We need their [fans] support because when you are on the pitch and you can hear the fans behind the team it is like 12 players. If they support us and be patient then we will pay them back with performance and results."

  18. Gallagher 'trying to find a solution with the club'published at 13:59 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on Conor Gallagher: "Gallagher is back and he is training. He is dong some medical tests and training separately so he’s won’t be involved in this game. He is also trying to find a solution with the club, so we will see what happens.

"Unfortunately these things happen every summer. All clubs have problems but hopefully for him this situation will finish where the player, club and manager will be happy."

  19. 'With time I can see the team improving'published at 13:57 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca started his news conference by confirming that everyone is available to face Manchester City except Reece James and Conor Gallagher.

On his first Premier League game for the club: "A good start is always important but I am quite confident and relaxed in terms of that because with time I can see the team improving. That is the only thing I can control.

"We have been doing well since day one and improving things. It is too early to see the team in the way I want to see, but I am happy with the process and they are where they are in my expectations. Day after day and game after game they are improving.

"With time we are going to close a bit of the gap between the other teams."

  20. Szmodics is a 'fantastic fit' - McKennapublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 16 August

Ipswich v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Ipswich Town

On newly-signed Ipswich striker Sammie Szmodics, McKenna said: "He has impressed everybody.

"Last season was standout in terms of his goalscoring record. Probably more so for me is the way he has improved his game every year. He is a learner, he is a worked and looking to improve all the time.

"He has climbed his way through the leagues and he has deserved his opportunity in the Premier League. That matches with OUR squad. I think from a cultural point of view he is a fantastic fit.

"He has a history with the club, a family who support the club and he is a very good player. In all aspects we are very happy to have him here."
