Talking about fantasy football, how about Ajax beating Panathinaikos 13-12 on penalties?

Ajax won through to the Europa League qualifying play-off round after edging an epic shootout featuring 34 spot-kicks.

Goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, 40, saved five penalties and scored one, while defender Anton Gaaei scored the winning kick for Ajax.

The Dutch side won despite the Netherlands striker Brian Brobbey missing two spot-kicks, with Bertrand Traore and Youri Baas also off target.

Manager Francesco Farioli said the shootout, which lasted 25 minutes in total, was "incredible".

"The spirit and dedication of the team were amazing tonight," he told Ziggo Sport. "We are not perfect, but we can't say that the players didn't give it their all."

  4. Mubama's intriguing Man City movepublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 16 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Divin Mubama is on the brink of joining Manchester City.

Mubama was a star of West Ham's 2023 FA Youth Cup-winning team but failed to break into David Moyes' side on a regular basis last season and rejected offers to stay at the London Stadium.

The 19-year-old is now in talks with City, which is intriguing because you would imagine if he couldn't get into West Ham's team, he will struggle to get into Pep Guardiola's

It will be interesting to see how that move works out.

  5. 'It does feel like an excuse'published at 11:10 British Summer Time 16 August

    Gary Neville
Former England defender on BBC Radio 4

I know what he means but the fact of the matter is, everybody is in the same boat and has had that issue of getting players back from championships, international tournaments, not many have got the signings in that they wanted yet.

It does feel like an excuse as a headline on the first day of the season but there will be no excuses tonight at Old Trafford with 75,000 people there.

Reacting to the Telegraph's headline where Erik ten Hag says Manchester United are "not ready".

I am most excited about Ruud van Nistelrooy’s appointment to the staff at Man United over the summer. He is my favourite player of all time and he will be the next Man United manager (potentially by Christmas)!

  7. 'I really don't know what to expect'published at 11:04 British Summer Time 16 August

Man Utd v Fulham (Fri, 20:00 BST)

Chris Sutton predictions column banner for BBC Sport

The first weekend of the season is always tricky to predict for various reasons, and with Manchester United I really don't know what to expect. I am not going to give them a win just because they are Manchester United and have had some great teams in the past, put it that way.

They won the FA Cup final with a good performance against Manchester City, but they finished eighth in the Premier League and their manager Erik ten Hag will be under pressure from the off.

Fulham sold Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich in the summer, and the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Willian and Tim Ream have all left too.

They had a pretty decent season last time out and, although their results did drop off in the last couple of months of the campaign, they won at Old Trafford in February.

I can only base these predictions on what I see and I have not seen enough good performances from United under Ten Hag to have any confidence in them playing well.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

  9. Southampton in Ugochukwu talkspublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 16 August

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Newly promoted Southampton are in talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu on loan.

The 20-year-old is highly rated at Stamford Bridge after an impressive pre-season campaign where he netted two goals against Inter Milan and Wrexham from a defensive midfield position.

But the Blues have an oversized squad and believe his development is best served on loan in the Premier League.

Ugochukwu joined Chelsea last season in a £23.2million deal from Rennes but played just 15 times in an injury-hit maiden season at Stamford Bridge.

  10. 'I think Spurs will be too strong for them'published at 10:54 British Summer Time 16 August

Leicester v Tottenham (Mon, 20:00 BST)

Chris Sutton predictions column banner for BBC Sport

I am hearing a lot of nonsense about Tottenham and how their manager Ange Postecoglou 'needs a good start' to the new campaign. I don't understand why he is under pressure now at the start of his second season.

The Spurs fans were bored and fed up every weekend under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, but they were entertained last season and almost made the top four too - all without Harry Kane.

Leicester will be well-organised under Steve Cooper, and they probably stand the best chance of staying up out of the three promoted clubs, but I think Spurs will be too strong for them.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3

  11. Tottenham sign Australia's Hunt on three-year dealpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 16 August

Tottenham have signed Australia international Clare Hunt from Paris St-Germain on a three-year deal until 2027.

Hunt was contracted at PSG until 2026, though neither club have disclosed whether a fee has been paid.

The 25-year-old had been a long-standing target for Tottenham, who explored signing the centre-back before she moved to PSG last year.

Spurs manager Robert Vilahamn also went to the Olympics last month to watch Hunt in Australia’s match against the USA.

Hunt, who has made 20 appearances for the Matildas, is the club's second signing of the summer.

  12. Odobert joins Spurs after Olympic successpublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 16 August

    Tottenham Hotspur

Wilson Odobert, 19, signed for Burnley last summer and scored four times in 33 appearances.

He became the Clarets' youngest scorer in the Premier League after finding the net against Chelsea.

The France Under-21 international made two appearances and scored once for his country in the Olympic warm-up games, but failed to make the squad.

Tottenham have confirmed he would be joining from Burnley "subject to formalities" on a five-year deal. The fee has not been disclosed.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel like the transfer window should close before the first game of the season. For me, it should run from the last game of the season - Champions League final - until the first match of the next league campaign. Not sure we should still have players moving once the games have started. I would also have a transfer window for managers.

  15. 'Southampton will know what is coming'published at 10:32 British Summer Time 16 August

Newcastle v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Chris Sutton predictions column banner for BBC Sport

This is another tough game for one of the promoted sides.

Newcastle have got some quality players and they are also such a powerful, physical and relentless outfit.

Southampton will know what is coming, but I am not sure they will be able to stop it happening.

  16. 'Evanilson is an exciting signing for the Bournemouth fans'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 16 August

Nottm Forest v Bournemouth (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Chris Sutton predictions column banner for BBC Sport

I was wondering how Bournemouth would replace Dominic Solanke's goals and then the news broke about them bringing in Brazil striker Evanilson from Porto, which is an exciting signing for their fans.

Things have been relatively quiet at Nottingham Forest compared to what usually happens with the ins and outs there each summer, and hopefully there will be less drama when the season starts too.

I supported Forest as a boy so I always want them to do well, and I do think they will crack the Premier League eventually, and have a smoother ride. Maybe it will be this year.

I don't see this game having quite so many thrills and spills, and I am going for Forest to edge it.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  17. 'We have one or two players who have been poorly'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 16 August

Nottm Forest v Bournemouth (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Bournemouth

Back to Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola and a final word on team news: "I think doing pre-season, the most important thing is to not lose players in the process of the build up. We've done a good job there. We have one or two players who have been poorly with some illnesses, but I hope they can help us in the game."

  18. Wilson making 'really good progress'published at 10:23 British Summer Time 16 August

Newcastle v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Eddie Howe also added that striker Callum Wilson is expected to return in a couple of games' time after making "really good progress" following treatment on an injury he picked up in pre-season.

Back to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and the return of Sandro Tonali, who will finish his 10-month ban for breaching betting rules on 28 August: “He has handled himself really well in this period, I am sure he has had some hard days. He has trained really well and has been a great team-mate. I know how focused and excited he is for his return.

"Again, another huge thing for me to say is thank you to the Newcastle United fans. The way they’ve looked after him and for how they’ve dealt with him socially.

"I think it’s been an incredible response and that will only help him when he returns.”

  20. 'I don't see Ipswich keeping them out'published at 10:13 British Summer Time 16 August

Ipswich v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

Chris Sutton predictions column banner for BBC Sport

I love the job Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has done, with back-to-back promotions, and they have brought a few players in, including goalkeeper Arijanet Muric from Burnley. Kalvin Phillips is set to sign on loan for the season too.

Liverpool have not signed anyone yet under new boss Arne Slot but their firepower is incredible and I don't see Ipswich keeping them out.

Ipswich were really brave with their playing style in the Championship but this is another step up, and it is a big one. I reckon they will score, but Liverpool will get more.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3
