'The vibes of the team are strong' - Guardiola ahead of Chelsea

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Kalvin Phillips and his expected loan move to Ipswich: "Kalvin has gone to Ipswich. I think it's already done, you never know until it's happened. He decided to go there. You have to have minutes and recover. Play, play, play. Maybe there is a chance to come back here in the future."

  2. 'Give Maresca time and it will work' - Guardiolapublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Manchester City

More from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on opponents Chelsea and their manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked as a coach under him at the Etihad.

Maresca left City to take over at Leicester, guiding them to the Premier League last season before being appointed Chelsea boss.

Guardiola said: "Happy to see him again, we saw him a few weeks ago in the States and we're looking forward to it again. The job Enzo did at Leicester belongs to him and his staff. My influence is zero on Leicester getting promoted again. I didn't score a goal or make any saves. I give info and they learn. It's on both sides and the success of the people together belongs absolutely to them.

"My advice is to give him time and it will work. All managers need time. I don't know if Chelsea is the place to do this, but it will work if they give him time. This is my feeling."

Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of Sammie Szmodics, 28, on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The Republic of Ireland striker finished last season as top scorer in the Championship for Blackburn Rovers.

Yesterday BBC Sport reported it was for a fee that could rise to around £11m.

Speaking to the club's website, external, he said: “It’s every boy’s dream to play in the Premier League and I’ve always said to my friends, family and agents that I’ll get to the top one day.

“There’s nothing more I want than to score at Portman Road for Ipswich Town. I am over the moon to be here and looking forward to the season ahead.”

  4. 'We will have to see what happens' - Guardiola on Cancelopublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was open to the idea of Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo returning to the first-team fold after successive loan moves to Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

But he added: "He's training with us, yes, we will see. Maybe stay, maybe go on loan. He loves to play football and train, we will see. It can happen, yes. In training, we say hi and we talk.

"What is going to happen depends on his agent. In the end, we have to say we will treat him like all the other players - with respect and do the best with the amount of qualities he has. I have never doubted his quality, but we will have to see what happens."

Cancelo, 30, has not played a competitive match for City since featuring in a derby defeat at Manchester United on 14 January, 2023.

  5. No Rodri in squad for Sundaypublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to the media ahead of the season opener away at Chelsea.

On Rodri: "He is in training, I don't know, I haven't seen him yet. He feels good. We'll have to see how he feels after training. No chance [on the squad for Sunday]."

  6. Bobb to be out 'three to four months'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola started his news conference by discussing the injury to Oscar Bobb, who fractured his leg during training.

He said they were "very sad" for him after confirming the Norwegian forward had undergone surgery and should be back in about "three or four months".

Guardiola also said that Kalvin Phillips' loan move to Ipswich was "close".

    More to follow.

  7. Alvarez played a 'huge part' in Man City's successpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 16 August

In the past, Manchester City have always been able to cope whenever key players leave but it will be interesting to see if they feel they need to replace Julian Alvarez after his £81.5m move to Atletico Madrid.

While I am sure Alvarez did want to start more games, especially the big ones, he still played a huge part in what they achieved last season.

Alvarez started their first 25 Premier League matches of the season, in a run that lasted until late February, and at that stage, he had created the most chances and made the joint-most assists of any City player. Only Erling Haaland had scored more league goals for them by then, too.

I know they got a lot of money for Alvarez but his versatility meant he did a variety of jobs for Guardiola, who loves to rotate his players but did not use anyone else as much as him in the league in the first seven months of last season.

Manchester City begin their quest for a fifth straight Premier League title when they visit Chelsea on Sunday.

If they are successful in their mission, it would be a 13th championship for Pep Guardiola across three clubs - Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City.

Little wonder there is so much talk about whether Guardiola will leave when his contract expires in the summer.

Mind you, his last comments on the matter, during City's pre-season tour of the United States, were that he could stay.

    Gary Neville
Former England defender on BBC Radio 4

For England go to an international [foreign] manager is a move that I don't think the FA will make on the back of St George's Park and everything they have invested.

But if Pep Guardiola has some sort of appetite to be the manager of England, I actually think that is the one guy - you couldn't turn him down.

  10. Willian confirms Fulham exitpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 16 August

Brazil midfielder Willian has confirmed on social media that he is leaving Fulham.

The 35-year-old first joined the west London club in September 2022 and after being linked with a move elsewhere last summer signed a new deal at Craven Cottage.

The former Chelsea and Arsenal winger said on his Instagram account: "I would like to thank Fulham for a wonderful two years. It was special to return to the Premier League and be part of this historic club and the amazing fans.

"I have had incredible moments and this club will always be in my heart."

Earlier this summer he opted against a one-year contract extension "to talk to other clubs".

  11. 'I wouldn’t be surprised if this was his final season'published at 12:12 British Summer Time 16 August

Chelsea v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

This is the longest Pep Guardiola has ever stayed at a club and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was his final season.

I've attended awards where he’s been present, he’s been at the game that day and he puts so much energy into watching the game, then after the game he watches it back again. He’s so invested in it.

For every manager, it takes its toll. Its a very stressful job, regardless of whether you’re in the Premier League or League Two because it takes up so much time of your life.

When you’re someone like Pep Guardiola, I do think there comes a time when you’re in danger of a burnout.

Enzo Maresca's first UK-based press conference will be full of difficult questions

Enzo Maresca will conduct his first news conference in London after being appointed Chelsea manager two months ago.

It's an unusual state of affairs but the new manager, who joined in a £10m deal from Leicester, saw his initial unveiling cancelled due to concerns that questions about an Enzo Fernandez racism storm could threaten to overshadow what is normally a celebration for a new coach.

Maresca will speak before of a match against his former employers Manchester City, where he acted as Pep Guardiola's assistant and built his reputation.

For many in the media who weren't on the club's US tour, this will be a first chance to meet the Italian and learn more about his temperament.

But he will face questions about Chelsea's treatment of Conor Gallagher.

The England international midfielder is in limbo after his £33m move to Atletico Madrid stalled due to a deal for Chelsea to sign striker Samu Omorodion in the opposite direction collapsing.

The Spanish side must raise funds to buy Gallagher, who was pictured in the Spanish club's stadium last weekend, but is now in limbo while back at the club's Cobham training ground.

There is also the question about the stockpiling of players more generally, with Chelsea boasting around 55 players on their books.

  14. Upcoming news conferencespublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 16 August

Don't forget, we will be hearing from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta at around 13:30 BST.

Here is a list of the Premier League news conferences we are expecting in the next hour:

    • 12:30 - Manchester City/Guardiola
    • 13:00 - Chelsea/Maresca
    • 13:00 - Wolves/O'Neil
    • 13:25 - Ipswich/McKenna

NB: All times are subject to change.

  15. 'If there is one thing Arsenal are missing, it is a goalscorer'published at 11:59 British Summer Time 16 August

    Alan Shearer
    Former England striker

If Arsenal sign a top striker then I would back them to go on and win the league.

When Mikel Arteta's side went so close last season, they had the best defence in the top flight, conceding only 29 goals in 38 games, but they have just gone out and signed another quality defender in Riccardo Calafiori.

It is the kind of thing Manchester City do, when they have got two fantastic centre-halves then go and bring in a third or fourth, and it means the Gunners will be strong if anything does happen to Gabriel or William Saliba.

They are looking to bring in another midfielder too, and are in talks about signing Spain's Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, but it is up front which I feel is the one position they can improve and maybe get that crucial extra edge that means they finish first, not second.

Clearly they are not far away from being a title-winning team and they definitely have the quality already, but if there is one thing they are missing to become champions, it is a goalscorer.

Chelsea have set an asking price of £60m for any clubs interested in signing 22-year-old English winger Noni Madueke, according to the Athletic, external.

Enzo Maresca's side have added Wolves winger Pedro Neto to their ranks and Madueke's game time could take a hit as a result.

Chelsea winger Diego Moreira has joined Ligue 1 club Strasbourg in a permanent deal.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Blues in July 2023 from Benfica and spent the start of last season on loan at Lyon.

He made one first-team appearance for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Strasbourg is the sister club of Chelsea, being owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's parent company BlueCo.

Chelsea have also loaned United States left-back Caleb Wiley to Strasbourg, who are managed by former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior, during the current transfer window.

Wilson Odobert is set to move to Tottenham, pending a medical

The addition of Wilson Odobert from Burnley adds to the signing of Dominic Solanke to deliver the firepower that Ange Postecoglou needs.

Postecoglou's big complaint about last season was how he ran out of options in attack when injuries took hold after a sensational start, in which the club went top of the league after going unbeaten in their first 10 games.

Harry Kane was sold to Bayern Munich without a direct replacement being signed and Richarlison suffered a series of injury issues.

But the signing of Odobert, 19, adds an extra two to the attack at Spurs, with star under-21s forward Will Lankshear and exciting 17-year-old Mikey Moore to have fringe roles in and around the first-team.

Solanke aside, the new signings are all teenagers, but Spurs have gone from talented yet lightweight in attack to full of options that suit the 'Angeball' style of play, which fans love.

Scottish football podcast: Old Firm ticket row 'exasperating'

Celtic and Rangers will provide away fans with ticket allocations for the final two Scottish Premiership meetings of the season, the league's governing body has stated.

It follows decisions by the Glasgow clubs, announced by Rangers on Wednesday, to continue their ban on away supporters from the matches at Celtic Park in September and Ibrox in January.

The Scottish Professional League says it has now spoken to both clubs to confirm that is the case.

"Thereafter, Rangers and Celtic will provide ticket allocations of around 5% of respective stadium capacity for away supporters for SPFL matches between the two clubs," it says in a statement.

"This remains subject to all necessary requirements being satisfied at both Ibrox and Celtic Park."

An agreement had been reached in March between the SPFL and the two clubs to reintroduce away fans.
