A final word from Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who has confirmed he has a fully-fit squad to choose from for the season opener.

On Saturday's opponents Ipswich, he said: "[Preparing is] not harder than if you had to prepare for a team that had been in the Premier League for 22 years. We saw their games from last season and pre-season.

"There's a lot of positivity around a club like this. People have always told me there are no easy games in the Premier League and this is what we expect tomorrow. We are really looking forward to it."

  2. 'You can help the players on the training ground'published at 10:08 British Summer Time 16 August

Ipswich v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot argues that he can strengthen the team without signing players: "If you don't strengthen the team then you become weaker? I don't understand that. You can help the player on the training ground to improve. It's not always true that the team becomes stronger if you bring in new players."

On Luis Diaz's future, following links with moves to Barcelona and Manchester City: "When I walked in there was Sky Sports News on and they spent all day talking about football. Is there any player they don't talk about? His future is with us. I like a lot what I've seen in the last 10 days he's been in, and last season too. I hope he has a big impact this season too."

  3. Howe on looking for players 'who can take the team on'published at 10:03 British Summer Time 16 August

More from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on transfers: "Everyone is looking for the best players they can find. From our perspective, we've got a good squad, when everyone's fit - a very good squad. So to sign players and make your squad better, it's difficult, but it's achievable - we can do it.

“We don't want to make a signing and three or four months down the line think 'it hasn't kicked us on anywhere' and you're just adding numbers. That's something we've got to avoid at all costs, in my opinion.

“The difference-makers, the players that can take the team on, is what we’re looking for."

  4. 'Right now it's not finished' - Iraola on Evanilson dealpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 16 August

Andoni Iraola on Brazil and Porto forward Evanilson, who Bournemouth have agreed a club record £40.2m deal to sign from Porto: "He has been here, he arrived last night, he has gone through all the medical but still he has things to do, because these things take time. A lot of paperwork to do, so I don’t know really what’s going to be the process, when it’s ready. Right now, it’s not finished. I really don’t know [if he will be ready for the opening match of the season].

On Evanilson as a player: "Obviously, I think he has the experience, he is still young, he has played Champions League football, has had experience with the national team. If we complete the signing, it will be a good signing for us."

  5. Alexander-Arnold 'can play both positions really well'published at 09:56 British Summer Time 16 August

Ipswich v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to the media before their Premier League opener at Ipswich on Saturday, on Trent Alexander-Arnold's best position: "A position for a player is always related to the team. The first aim is to bring the best out of the team. Trent is known for playing as a right full-back.

"When he was younger he played in midfield and he did it in the Euros. I think he can play both positions really well and it's up to me where I think he could help the team the most."

  6. 'We wish him all the best' - Iraola on Solanke departurepublished at 09:53 British Summer Time 16 August

More from Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola on Dominic Solanke, who joined Tottenham earlier this month: "I've been very clear, for us without Dominic, my job is going to be difficult. He is a hell of a player, at a very high level.

"But there is also a personal side, that you want the best for him. We will want him to score a lot of goals, to beat every opposition, to be as good as he is and I am sure he will be because his behaviour has always been top.

"It is not easy to score the goals he has scored, to have the performance he had.

"For sure, he has had offers before, he was very happy here, he has been until the last day. It’s also a good chance for him, but we wish him all the best."

  7. 'We’re in a much better place' - Howe on injuriespublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 16 August

Newcastle v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on injuries: “I think we are definitely in a better position than we were for the majority of last season, certainly to the back end of last season.

“We have got Nick Pope back fully fit - I’ll touch wood with all of these because we have still got training before we play.

“Joe Willock is in a lot better place. I wouldn’t say he's 100% match fit, he's had two games, trained well and is certainly on the road to being the Joe Willock we all know and love.

“Several others are in a lot better physical condition than last year.

"We've got obviously got Sandro [Tonali] getting closer to returning, but we still have the legacy of injuries from last year, long-term ones of Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman.

"We lost Callum [Wilson] during the early stages of pre-season - he’s a huge miss - and Lewis Miley.

"[Matt] Targett is making early steps back. He trained this week and trained really well.

"We've still got work to do, but we’re in a much better place."

It's an old debate, clouded by fanaticism, that will never have a one-size-fits-all answer. Ultimately, I think it's up to a player's conscience, and the international rules, whether or not he wants to go. But there will always be unhappy heads regardless.

  10. 'Zubimendi decided not to come'published at 09:37 British Summer Time 16 August

Ipswich v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has also been speaking to the media - ahead of their Premier League opener at Ipswich on Saturday.

On the attempted transfer of Martin Zubimendi, he said: "I've said many times already that our squad is really strong and it's not so easy to find players who can help us or improve the squad.

"Zubimendi was one of them to be fair, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have. Endo did well in pre-season. We're in a good place. Richard is trying to strengthen the squad. Zubimendi decided not to come, we did every effort. If a player decides not to come then it's obvious he's not coming."

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been talking about the loss of striker Dominic Solanke to Tottenham.

  12. When will semi-automated offside technology be introduced?published at 09:28 British Summer Time 16 August

Just to recap on that point about the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), Premier League clubs approved its use for the 2024-25 season back in April.

The plan is to introduce the system after one of the international breaks in September or October, the Premier League said.

Fifa first used the technology at the 2022 men's World Cup in Qatar.

It is anticipated SAOT could cut the length of a video assistant referee (VAR) check for offside by 31 seconds.

I was on a briefing call with the Premier League earlier this week. They want to implement a six-point plan. They keep talking about maintaining a high threshold for intervention.

You'll hear a lot of talk about "Referee’s Call" during the season. They want to reduce delays to the game, they want to improve the fan experience and that needs to happen. They want to improve the consistency of VAR, they want to improve transparency of it.

The other point is about education and trying to get their messages across and improve the various processes of VAR.

At some point - and it wont be at the start of the season - what will help regarding the offsides is that we will have the semi-automated offside technology.

It’s not ready for the start of the season, they are still waiting for the software, but that will help regarding the offside checks. They are looking to reduce the delays there by about 30 seconds.

We will just have to wait and see if that six-point plan proves to be a success.

  14. New rules, new faces - Premier League changespublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 16 August

So it seems to be Premier League tradition that Mohamed Salah scores in the opening fixture, but what about the changes we can expect to see this season?

    Here is a rundown:

    • Referee's call: VAR has a higher bar to intervene and will only do so if they can "see without any doubt the on-pitch official has made a clear mistake"
    • Premier League Match Centre: Will post near-live explanations of VAR decisions on social media platform X
    • In-stadium explanations: More replays will be shown in stadiums and decisions will be explained on the big screens
    • Shorter stoppage time: Goal celebration times won't be added on at the end of a half until 30 seconds after the celebration has begun
    • Blocking at set-pieces: Players will be more strictly penalised for blocking or obstructing opponents at set-pieces
    • Handball law relaxed: Players told they don't need to rigidly move their hands behind their backs or by their side; it's more to do with movement
    • Penalties: Ball must be on the centre of the spot. Handballs don't always mean bookable offences. And encroachment only penalised if impacting penalty

  15. Another opening day goal for Salah?published at 09:07 British Summer Time 16 August

Ipswich v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

No player in Premier League history has scored more goals on the opening day of the season than Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

He has scored eight, level with Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, and Wayne Rooney, while only the latter has registered more goal involvements in the first game than Salah.

It’s a new era at Liverpool this season with Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp and the Dutchman will be holding his first Premier League news conference this morning.

There will be plenty to chat about, with the club’s lack of transfer activity set to be high on the agenda as the Reds go into the new season as the only top-flight side who have not made a major signing.

They have been close a couple of times with Anthony Gordon and Martin Zubimendi but Reds fans are still waiting for a new arrival to come through the Anfield door.

Earlier in the summer, Liverpool turned down signing winger Gordon as Newcastle, who were trying to raise money to comply with profit and sustainability rules, wanted Jarell Quansah going the other way as part of the deal.

It then emerged a deal was agreed for Gordon involving Reds defender Joe Gomez moving in the other direction but the Magpies ended up selling midfielder Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and winger Yakuba Minteh to Brighton to generate funds.

Liverpool moved for Zubimendi believing he was open to joining them from Real Sociedad only for the Spain midfielder to change his mind.

Slot has always stated the quality of the squad Klopp left him and that players need to be of a certain standard to make the Reds better, so we’ll see what more he has to say on the issue today.

  17. Look who's talking nowpublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 16 August

We mentioned those Premier League news conferences, well in the next hour we expect to hear from Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's Arne Slot and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

In theory, Iraola could be up first, while both Slot and Howe are expected around 09:30 BST.

We will bring you the top lines from those news conferences as soon as we get them.

  18. 'It's going to be Arsenal and Man City for sure...and perhaps Liverpool'published at 08:55 British Summer Time 16 August

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think it’s [Premier League title race] going to be a lot more tighter this year. I think Arsenal really have a big chance.

I’m confused by Liverpool. I don’t know about the manager, how it’s going to work, how they’re going to play.

Liverpool disappointed themselves last season. They still have the players though, they could still be in the mix.

I think it’s going to be Arsenal and Man City for sure and perhaps Liverpool.

I think the new hierarchy have got a lot of work to do behind the scenes without having to think about replacing the head coach in the first two or three months of the season, which would put further pressure of them.

I don't think it's the intention of anyone at the club and I don't think it's the intention of the fans either but if those results [in the first couple of months of the season] are bad, then he will come under big pressure.
