Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:"It was a fantastic game to watch. Erik ten Hag has a depleted squad, but his team came out and showed attitude. He can take a lot of positives from that."

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen added: "Manchester United kept the ball well and Erik ten Hag made some changes which worked well.

"If they look back over that game, with the hostile environment, they will be a bit disappointed as the game was there for the taking. If it had been a boxing match then Manchester United would have won on points."

Larne boss Tiernan Lynch "disappointed and frustrated" after Rovers defeat

Larne boss Tiernan Lynch was left "disappointed and frustrated" after watching his team slip to a 4-1 defeat by Shamrock Rovers in their Uefa Conference League game at Windsor Park.

Josh Honohan put the League of Ireland champions in front after just three minutes and Johnny Kenny doubled the lead before a Tomas Cosgrove own goal made it 3-0.

Chris Gallagher netted early in the second half to give Larne hope, before the impressive Graham Burke sealed a comfortable win for the Dubliners.

"I'm disappointed and frustrated - we conceded really stupid goals at really bad times," said Lynch.

"We got hit by a sucker-punch very early. The one thing you can't do is let Rovers get into a rhythm and we got punished for that."

It was a harsh lesson for Larne, who are the first team from Northern Ireland to qualify for the league stage of a European competition.

"We knew how good a team Rovers are and how many good individuals they have," Lynch said.

"We just didn't do the things that we worked so hard to make sure we carried out and got punished badly."

A milestone win in a major European competition.

The triumph over Astana might not send shockwaves through football, but try telling The New Saints a first win for a Welsh league side at this level did not matter.

For a whole host of reasons and with numerous ramifications too.

The landmark nature of the victory is one thing, as goals from Rory Holden and Declan McManus made sure of a maiden Conference League win.

But TNS' success in their temporary home of Shrewsbury carried a far greater significance than just being a footnote in history, for what it meant to the players, the bank balance, the chances of progress – and the whole of Welsh football too.

  4. Mikey Moore's touches against AZpublished at 08:54 British Summer Time

    Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar

Mikey Moore caused the AZ defence plenty of problems, especially in the second half when he switched to the left wing.

The 17-year-old had 54 touches in the match and played some teasing crosses into the box.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said it's 'exciting for the club' to have Moore in their roster after what's been a remarkable few months for the youngster.

Spurs signalled their intentions to use him in their first team at the end of last season. He's since signed his first professional contract and has been used six times already this campaign.

  5. 'I thought we had Neymar on the left wing!'published at 08:50 British Summer Time

    Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar

Manager Ange Postecoglou said people should be 'rightly worried about putting too much pressure on young players' after Mikey Moore's exciting performance during Tottenham's Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar.

But captain-on-the-night James Maddison didn't get that memo.

"I thought we had Neymar on the left wing!" Maddison told TNT Sports. "He is fearless, [he has] that young, fearless mentality.

"He's a brilliant lad, he has bags of ability. I will hopefully help him with wise words but he has all the ability and well done to him."

  6. Felix and Mudryk take their chancepublished at 08:45 British Summer Time

    Panathinaikos 1-4 Chelsea

    Gary Rose
    BBC Sport

This was the perfect response by Chelsea following their narrow defeat to Liverpool at the weekend, with a couple of individual performances that will have no doubt caught Enzo Maresca's eye.

Joao Felix and Mykhailo Mudryk were the standouts as the pair combined well and helped themselves to some goals and assists.

Felix has not started in the Premier League this season, and faces a difficult task of getting a starting berth given his favoured position is the number 10 role currently occupied by Cole Palmer.

But two goals will have helped his confidence greatly, while it was Mudryk who assisted both of them and he will hope that and a goal will boost his chances of nailing a regular starting spot.

Maresca has a headache, but the right sort of one as Chelsea show they are capable of fighting well on all fronts.

  10. What happened for Mourinho's red card?published at 08:27 British Summer Time

    Fenerbahce 1-1 Man Utd

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho saw red in his side's 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Thursday night.

It wasn't the first of his career and it's bound to not be his last, but what happened?

The incident that sparked it all was a perceived foul by Manuel Ugarte on Bright Osayi-Samuel in the second half when the scores were level.

Osayi-Samuel was forced off injured following the coming together but referee Clement Turpin felt there was no foul and VAR agreed, to the utter consternation of the entire Fenerbahce bench, whom Mourinho led in their protests.

The former United boss charged down the touchline to argue with the fourth official in his vintage expressive manner before then turning his attention to the referee and that only resulted in one thing - a straight red card.

  11. Football regulator to have power to tackle parachute paymentspublished at 08:21 British Summer Time

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

"Strengthened" legislation to establish an independent football regulator for the elite men's game in England is set to be introduced to Parliament by the government.

The regulator will be given "new powers" as part of the Football Governance Bill, including over the Premier League's controversial multi-million pound 'parachute payments' that are given to relegated clubs.

It will "explicitly require clubs to provide effective engagement" with fans on changes to ticket prices, and any proposals to relocate home grounds.

It will no longer be required to consider government foreign and trade policy when approving club takeovers, and there will be "a clear commitment" to do more to improve equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

The bill will be introduced on Thursday in the House of Lords in an attempt to speed up the legislation.

The bill, tabled initially in March, failed to pass through Parliament before the general election was called in May.

But in "major changes" to the proposed legislation, the Labour government is set to strengthen the regulator's remit, which will oversee clubs in the top five tiers of the game.

  13. What is Mourinho's beef with Uefa?published at 08:13 British Summer Time

Just to add some further context, Jose Mourinho mentions the 2023 Europa League final, when his Roma team lost to Sevilla on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Anthony Taylor booked 14 individuals during the game, including Mourinho, who later confronted the English referee in a car park. He directed a foul-mouthed rant at Taylor and wasbanned for four matches by Uefa.

    Fenerbahce

Jose Mourinho's frustrations around the officials on Thursday continued as his post-match news conference went on but his answer to one question led him down a slightly different route...

"The best thing I have to do, when I leave Fenerbahce, is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in Uefa competitions," he said.

"So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go.

"I don’t want to speak anymore about it. I want to speak about the game."

Jose Mourinho may have been his box-office self on the touchline and that transferred into the press room during his post-match news conference.

When asked by an English journalist if he would appeal against his dismissal, Mourinho said: "If I appeal I will get six months.

"Since the Sevilla-Roma final there is nothing to do. That is why the future is better without European competition, so I don’t get upset."

Not for the first time in his long and storied career, Jose Mourinho left the scene of a major game with the conversation all about him.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may still be under pressure after his side’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Fenerbahce in Istanbul.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana may have made a sensational first-half double save to deny eventual Fenerbahce goalscorer Youssef En-Nesyri.

And Manuel Ugarte’s block to prevent the Moroccan firing into an empty net soon after might just have been equally as good.

But all of this is a side issue compared to what happened around Mourinho, who ended the game sat on a step in the stand behind the home dugout, passing instructions to his coaching staff as he tried to engineer a winner.

Endless touchline antics, a second-half sending off and some box office post-match interviews. This was trademark Mourinho. But that was not the end of the matter. Not by a long way.

Joao Felix scored twice as Chelsea won at Panathinaikos on an emotional night in the Uefa Conference League as tributes were paid to the Greek side's former defender George Baldock.

The hosts were playing their first home game since Baldock died at the age of 31 on 9 October.

Before kick-off, Panathinaikos players trained in shirts with Baldock's squad number of 32 on them, while Chelsea players also held up a shirt bearing his name and number. Both sets of fans also held up placards with 32 on them.

David Bowie's Starman played through the PA system, in reference to the former Sheffield United player's nickname.

Once the game got under way, Panathinaikos played with high energy and determination and Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had to be alert to keep out Tin Jedvaj's second-minute header.

Visiting boss Enzo Maresca made 11 changes for the game and it took a while for Chelsea to settle, but they broke through with a well-worked move on the counter, Felix playing a one-two with Mykhailo Mudryk before sweeping in from close range.

Mudryk made it 2-0 soon after the break when he headed in Pedro Neto's cross for his first goal of the season, and the Ukraine forward was the provider again for Felix to get his second, with his strike taking a deflection on its way into the net.

Christopher Nkunku wrapped up the comfortable win for Chelsea, firing home a confident penalty after Daniel Mancini's foul.

Former Manchester United midfielder Facundo Pellistri swept in a consolation for the hosts, but it was ultimately a comfortable win for Chelsea, who maintain their 100% record in the league phase.
