Jose Mourinho may have been his box-office self on the touchline and that transferred into the press room during his post-match news conference.

When asked by an English journalist if he would appeal against his dismissal, Mourinho said: "If I appeal I will get six months.

"Since the Sevilla-Roma final there is nothing to do. That is why the future is better without European competition, so I don’t get upset."

The former Manchester United midfielder also said he's a fan of Thomas Tuchel, who had been touted as the latest successor to Mourinho at Old Trafford before being named as the new England boss.

Not for the first time in his long and storied career, Jose Mourinho left the scene of a major game with the conversation all about him.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may still be under pressure after his side’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Fenerbahce in Istanbul.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana may have made a sensational first-half double save to deny eventual Fenerbahce goalscorer Youssef En-Nesyri.

And Manuel Ugarte’s block to prevent the Moroccan firing into an empty net soon after might just have been equally as good.

But all of this is a side issue compared to what happened around Mourinho, who ended the game sat on a step in the stand behind the home dugout, passing instructions to his coaching staff as he tried to engineer a winner.

Endless touchline antics, a second-half sending off and some box office post-match interviews. This was trademark Mourinho. But that was not the end of the matter. Not by a long way.

Joao Felix scored twice as Chelsea won at Panathinaikos on an emotional night in the Uefa Conference League as tributes were paid to the Greek side's former defender George Baldock.

The hosts were playing their first home game since Baldock died at the age of 31 on 9 October.

Before kick-off, Panathinaikos players trained in shirts with Baldock's squad number of 32 on them, while Chelsea players also held up a shirt bearing his name and number. Both sets of fans also held up placards with 32 on them.

David Bowie's Starman played through the PA system, in reference to the former Sheffield United player's nickname.

Once the game got under way, Panathinaikos played with high energy and determination and Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had to be alert to keep out Tin Jedvaj's second-minute header.

Visiting boss Enzo Maresca made 11 changes for the game and it took a while for Chelsea to settle, but they broke through with a well-worked move on the counter, Felix playing a one-two with Mykhailo Mudryk before sweeping in from close range.

Mudryk made it 2-0 soon after the break when he headed in Pedro Neto's cross for his first goal of the season, and the Ukraine forward was the provider again for Felix to get his second, with his strike taking a deflection on its way into the net.

Christopher Nkunku wrapped up the comfortable win for Chelsea, firing home a confident penalty after Daniel Mancini's foul.

Former Manchester United midfielder Facundo Pellistri swept in a consolation for the hosts, but it was ultimately a comfortable win for Chelsea, who maintain their 100% record in the league phase.

The New Saints became the first domestic Welsh club to win in the league or group stage of a major European competition courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Astana in Shrewsbury.

Rory Holden's headed effort in the 40th minute at New Meadow was the first ever goal scored by Craig Harrison's side in the Uefa Conference League proper.

Striker Declan McManus netted the home side's second from the penalty spot in the 78th minute following a handball by Islambek Kuat to seal a famous triumph against the record seven-time Kazakhstan Premier League champions.

The Saints face Shamrock Rovers, Sweden's Djurgarden, Greek giants Panathinaikos and Celje of Slovenia in their remaining group fixtures having claimed arguably the biggest three points in the club's history on matchday two.

The Saints - playing the home fixture some 20 miles away from their own Park Hall stadium - did well to contain the visitors and slowly grew in confidence.

Shamrock Rovers were comfortable winners over Larne in the Uefa Conference League, winning 4-1 at Windsor Park.

The game pitched the reigning champions from the Irish Premiership and League of Ireland against one another, the first time teams from the two leagues had faced each other in competitive action since Cork got the better of Linfield in the first round of Europa League qualifying eight years ago.

While neither side has been as dominant domestically this season as they have been in recent years, Rovers were clearly the better side in Belfast, racing into a 3-0 lead after only half an hour.

Chris Gallagher did pull one back for Larne in the second half but any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished by Graham Burke's goal in response.

Larne, the first Irish Premiership team to make it to this phase of a major Uefa competition, had not looked overawed in their competition debut against Molde last month, keeping the Norwegians at bay until the 51st minute before ultimately losing 3-0.

Here, though, Stephen Bradley's four-in-a-row league champions looked a cut above from the off.

Hearts enjoyed an "amazing night", says new head coach Neil Critchley, after they recorded a dominant Conference League win over Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.

After beating St Mirren last weekend in Critchley's first game as head coach, the Tynecastle club put on another dominant display and looked far removed from the side that made a historically bad start to the season.

The hosts blew Omonia away during the first half in Edinburgh, with fine strikes from Alan Forrest and Blair Spittal enough to see off the visitors and earn a second Conference League win in two games.

"I loved it," Critchley told BBC Scotland. "Our start got the crowd involved - that was our plan. It was a very intimidating atmosphere and they found it difficult.

"When we won the ball back, we were good with it and I thought we were fully deserving of our two goals. We were really difficult to play against."

Spirits are now high in Gorgie and the run of form comes at the perfect time with the first Edinburgh derby of the season on Sunday.

Richarlison scored from the penalty spot to help Tottenham maintain their perfect start in the Europa League with victory over AZ Alkmaar.

In his first start for Spurs this season after injury trouble, the Brazilian briefly argued with James Maddison about who should take the penalty after Maxim Dekker had kicked out at Lucas Bergvall in the box.

Captain Maddison relinquished the responsibility and Richarlison confidently sent the ball straight down the middle to hand Tottenham the decisive goal in the 53rd minute.

Ange Postecoglou's side had struggled to break down AZ's defence until then and could not make the most of their few clear-cut first-half chances.

Mikey Moore glanced a close-range header wide early on, while Timo Werner's problems in front of goal continued with two lacklustre efforts before he was replaced by Brennan Johnson for the second half, but Spurs were much improved after the interval, with exciting English teenager Moore playing a starring role.

Former Spurs forward Troy Parrott, who joined AZ in July, had the chance to equalise with 15 minutes remaining but drilled his strike straight at Fraser Forster.

The Dutch side had to play the last five minutes with 10 men, though, as David Moller Wolfe received a second yellow card.

  11. Mourinho sent off as Man Utd held by Fenerbahcepublished at 07:13 British Summer Time

    Fenerbahce 1-1 Man Utd

    Simon Stone

Jose Mourinho was sent off as his Fenerbahce side came from behind to condemn his old club Manchester United to a third successive Europa League draw in Istanbul.

United had led at the break through Christian Eriksen’s fourth goal of the season, but the hosts levelled four minutes after the restart when Youssef En-Nesyri got between United defenders to head home Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross from close range.

With the noise levels rising and excitement at fever pitch, Mourinho was red carded by French referee Clement Turpin just before the hour as he led the home side’s penalty claims after Bright Osayi-Samuel went down under a challenge by United midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Despite furious protests from the Fenerbahce bench, VAR backed up Turpin’s view there was nothing illegal about the incident and Turpin came to the technical area to tell Mourinho to leave. The Portuguese took his time but eventually relocated to the steps at the front of the stand next to the dugouts, close enough to continue to give instructions to his coaching staff.

United had their chances to win the game but substitute Rasmus Hojlund opted to go alone rather than play a pass to the better placed Alejandro Garnacho and his shot rolled harmlessly through to home goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. Then Garnacho lost control of the ball as he ran into the area and that chance went begging too.

The visitors also failed to avoid another injury issue, as manager Erik ten Hag had hoped, as Brazilian wide-man Antony was stretchered off when he landed awkwardly after attempting an unnecessary flick by the touchline.

Manager Philippe Clement is demanding his Rangers team "create habits, connections and consistency" after they responded to Sunday's damaging defeat at Kilmarnock with a vibrant 4-0 Europa League victory over FCSB.

The Belgian said before the game that it was "not about the reaction, it's about the performance" - but he got both after a week of intense criticism in the Ibrox side's biggest European win since 2007.

Vaclav Cerny teed up Tom Lawrence's opener and netted a classy double in a standout performance, before Hamza Igamane sealed the dominant win with his first goal for the club.

"We were all sick of losing," Clement said. "Everybody was disappointed about Sunday and we wanted to stand up altogether.

"I still see a lot of things we can improve on, but I'm happy everybody can see there's potential in this squad. We need time to connect everything together.

"I'm looking forward to the future with this squad. It's about creating habits, connections and consistency. We're going to work hard on that."
