No disrespect to the FA cup and it's rich history and the fact I'm happy to see some back up players get a run out but this is a distraction when Sunderland are 3 points off the top of the championship given that I would still like to see us win and get a Premier league side so we can put our full strength squad out and measure how well we will do should we go up come the end of the season.

  2. Sutton's predictionpublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time

Nottingham Forest v Luton (15.00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    BBC Sport football expert

    Sutton's prediction: 1-0

When these two teams met in the Premier League in March it was a relegation six-pointer, but they have gone in totally different directions since.

Forest just keep on winning and it is incredible that they are being talked about now as being in the title race.

Their manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, will definitely tinker with his team because they play Premier League leaders Liverpool on Tuesday, but they should still have enough to get through.

  3. Luton begin post-Edwards erapublished at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time

Nottingham Forest v Luton (15.00 GMT)

Luton Town boss Rob Edwards left the club by mutual consent on Thursday, with the Bedfordshire side facing a second successive relegation battle.

The 42-year-old was appointed in November 2022 and steered The Hatters to promotion back to the top flight for the first time in over 30 years in 2023 when they beat Coventry City on penalties at Wembley.

He remained at the helm despite relegation from the Premier League after just a single season, but a run of four straight defeats has left them 20th in the Championship.

His assistants, Richie Kyle and Paul Trollope will be in charge of the team for today's game.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to ITV: "Credit to them, I think they showed their style of play, which is a big compliment.

"They played the same style as they always play. In the end, of course, the difference in quality makes a big difference for us, but compliments to them with how they showed up today."

On Rio Ngumoha being Liverpool's youngest starter in the FA Cup: "He did well. There were a few moments where the fans could see why we think he's a talent. He is good in one-v-one situations.

"He showed a bit more in the first half than in the second half. It is nice to get your debut and get the win. It is a special day for him."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold's performance: "Trent didn't have his best game against Manchester United, but for the rest of the season he has been so good for us - I liked his performance today.

"Our fans have always given him a lot of support. He didn't play well once, but fans reacted to that. If Trent just plays what we expect from him, then he gets support."

On Federico Chiesa's first goal for Liverpool: "It is definitely a good first step, but as much as I liked the way Accrington Stanley played we have to take into consideration that we're talking about League Two level.

"It is good to have him back on the pitch. He was a threat, but let's not get carried away."

Sunderland v Stoke may not be the most glamorous of FA Cup third round ties - but try telling that to these fans.

These two have rich histories in this rich competition; Stoke reached the final in 2011 - Sunderland won it famously in 1973.

On Rio Ngumoha: "As soon as he come on he was lightning and I am so proud of him."

On Accrington Stanley: "They offered a lot and first team football is tough and they're big lads, but it was a good challenge and I think I did well - hopefully more to come.

Many of the 3,000 supporters from the North West have got in the stadium early to watch this glamour tie at Stamford Bridge.

This is respite in a punishing campaign for the Shrimpers who are second-bottom of the entire football league.

There is going to be a protest both at kick-off and during the 19th and 20th minutes, which has been organised by the 1920Union supporters' campaign group, encouraging owner Jason Whittingham to sell the club.

This famous Premier League stadium is a big stage to make some noise.

  18. Promotion-chasing Clarets make 10 changespublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time

    Reading v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

A cup tie diversion - or distraction - for two sides with promotion on their minds.

Burnley sit second in the Championship as they bid to win back a place in the Premier League, while Reading are in the League One play-off spots.

Scott Parker has opted to rest his hard-working league side and makes 10 changes from the team which beat Blackburn last time out - just John Egan keeps his place - while Reading show three changes.

Burnley last tasted defeat on 3 November - their only loss in 23 games - and have conceded just 11 goals all season.

Despite losing their manager Ruben Selles to Hull last month, Reading have taken 10 points in an unbeaten four-match run under new boss Noel Hunt.

And history suggests the two-time semi-finalists do have a sniff against the Clarets, who lifted the trophy 111 years ago.

Burnley have won just one of their past 20 visits to Reading, while the Berkshire side have won 10 of their past 14 home FA Cup ties on home soil, a run which includes two victories against today’s opponents.
