  4. Standout matches of the third roundpublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

It is always exciting when the Premier League teams enter the fray as lower-league clubs hope to draw the big names and potentially cause an upset.

League Two Accrington Stanley won't have far to travel for their match on Saturday but they face the toughest of tasks in Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Two non-league sides remain in the competition with Tamworth, the lowest-ranked team remaining in the cup, hosting Tottenham on Sunday as reward for their penalty shootout win against League One side Burton Albion.

Fellow National League outfit Dagenham & Redbridge will go to Championship side Millwall in the last match of the third round on Monday.

Saturday's tie at Etihad Stadium will have extra needle as Manchester City host neighbours Salford City, who are owned by the 'Class of '92' - former Manchester United players Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

Arsenal take on holders Manchester United in an all-Premier League affair on Sunday.

  8. 'Safe pair of hands' gives fans what they wantedpublished at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport football news reporter

With Everton teetering above the drop zone, Moyes' key task will be to ensure the club move into their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock next season playing Premier League football.

The side have been sound defensively but stagnated under Dyche's one-dimensional style of play, with the team creating few chances and the goals drying up.

Strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto have struggled to score through a lack of service, but will now have a fresh start under a new boss with different ideas to help fire the club back up the table.

Supporters had grown tired of watching the team and, despite a general consensus that dismissing Dyche was the correct decision, there was a subdued atmosphere in the FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough on Thursday evening.

The Blues faithful have been starved of success, but a significant issue at the club in recent years has been a lack of stability.

The Toffees have had to install yet another man in the dugout, and caretaker boss Leighton Baines said there has to be "hope and optimism" amid the managerial change.

Moyes is a safe pair of hands as he returns to familiar surroundings, with the hierarchy bringing back someone who many fans wanted. Their job now is to stand by the new manager.

Moyes is a fantastic re-appointment by Everton. Completely underrated due to a stain from his time at Man Utd, however look at West Ham without him. Everton for a second half of the season mid-table push

  10. How much work does Moyes have to do?published at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Everton's numbers in the league this season make for grim reading:

    • Only in three seasons in their history have they scored fewer goals after 19 games.
    • They have the division's lowest expected goals (xG) at 18.33.
    • Their tally of 63 shots on target is the second lowest behind Southampton's 58.
    • Everton's average of 0.79 goals per game is their lowest in 13 seasons. It was 1.05 last season and 0.89 in 2022-23.

The appointment of David Moyes is a positive first step in bringing stability back to the club that has been on a downhill path to mediocrity in the years since he left. The new owners have shown decisiveness in making the change, now they need to support Moyes this January in bringing in the players he needs to keep us out of the relegation zone, and again in the summer to start building a team that will finish comfortably mid-table next year. We can build from there. I, like many Evertonians, hope that David can bring back some of the relative success we shared in his first spell. A drama free season would be a start!

Can't imagine there is anyone who ticks as many boxes as Moyes - experienced Premier League manager, can work in tight financial constraints, understands the media, plays counter attacking football so doesn't need to rebuild the squad, loves the club, will be given time by the fanbase, and of course, no fee required as he's currently out of work. He's as perfect a fit as it's possible to conceive of, Everton owners must be over the moon.

    David Moyes
New Everton manager on Everton's club website

I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn't hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club.

Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team.

The overall opinion appears to be positive, but there are some fans that will hold a grudge against him for leaving Everton for Manchester United. Personally, he did a pretty good job with Everton during his last time here, and he is a more experienced manager now, so let's hope that stands him in good stead. I'm hoping he's able to gel the team, get a few wins under his belt, and prove himself as one of the best British managers and an Everton legend. I'd also love to see him bring in the next Cahill, Fellani or Coleman too, rather than buying expensive prima donnas.

So, glad Moyes has been reappointed manager. It was when he was first appointed when I fell in love with the club. The way he made astute signings and how the team scrapped and fought against the big clubs. Looking forward to another successful stint this time around. COYB

David Moyes worked wonders at Everton with no money and brought success to West Ham. As a blue, I welcome him back with open arms. Hopefully he will guide us to safety and it would be fitting for him to lead us out at the new stadium.
