  2. Man City target Vitor Reis on his waypublished at 15:27 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Manchester City's squad building plans are advancing.

Teenage defender Vitor Reis is expected to have his City medical over the next day or so before completing his move from Brazilian club Palmeiras.

Palmeiras had hoped to keep Reis for their Club World Cup campaign in the summer but it is my understanding City rejected that idea.

    Ipswich v Brighton (19:30 GMT)

Former Brighton forward Warren Aspinall speaking to the Albion Unlimited podcast about Julio Enciso, who has been linked with a loan move away from the Amex Stadium: "We've seen him subbed, we've seen him be a cheerleader, and we've seen him play brilliantly against top sides.

"Will he get into the team regularly? I don't think he will. Does he go out on loan? If I'm being really honest, I'd be looking to sell him and see what fee we can get for him.

"It is down to the player too. He's a full international and is a big star for his national team - he'll want to be playing regularly for them. He can get his head down and work his socks off, but he might not get picked.

"By the time the January transfer window [ends], he will be sulking that he's not playing regularly. It could unrest the changing room.

"If Enciso goes, I think we have got enough."

  5. Ipswich's Hutchinson to be assessed while Julio out for Brightonpublished at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Ipswich will assess Omari Hutchinson, who could return from a groin issue earlier than anticipated, but Sammie Szmodics is expected to miss out after hurting his ankle against Fulham on 5 January.

Fit-again striker George Hirst made his first appearance for two months at the weekend and is in contention but this game comes too soon for Axel Tuanzebe and Conor Chaplin.

Ben Godfrey is available to make his league debut, having started Sunday's FA Cup win against Bristol Rovers following a loan move from Atalanta.

Brighton defender Igor Julio will miss the remainder of the season because of a hamstring injury.

Fellow centre-back Lewis Dunk has been passed fit but Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter and Yankuba Minteh will need to be monitored.

  6. 'It would be just like United to drop more points'published at 15:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Chris Sutton BBC Sport columnist banner

I have a lot of admiration for Manchester United's performance in their FA Cup win against Arsenal, especially to grind it out with 10 men for an hour after Diogo Dalot was sent off.

I do not want to devalue what United did against Arsenal or Liverpool but they were games where the expectation was not on them to get results.

We know United are good on the counter-attack away from home, but against Saints at Old Trafford the onus is on them to take the game to the opposition.

That is exactly where they have been struggling recently and, like I said on 606 on Sunday night, it would be just like Manchester United to be flat, find things difficult, and drop more points.

Southampton under Ivan Juric are very different to the way they played under previous boss Russell Martin because most of the time they just lump it forward now, and they are far more direct.

I still think United will find a way to win, but I am not so sure it will be a completely routine one.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

  7. 'It is best for Dibling to stay at Southampton'published at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

That's according to Southampton boss Ivan Juric, anyway.

Speaking in his news conference on Wednesday before the Saints' trip to Old Trafford this evening, Juric was asked about the future of the teenager amid rumours linking him with a move away in the January transfer window.

"Absolutely [it is best for him to stay] because he needs to play and improve, so it is best for him to stay here, of course," he said.

"I think he is better when he plays further forward because he does not need to do as much defensive work. He can score one v one, so for now it [playing up front] is good for him."

Another player who Juric wants to stay is defender Kyle Walker-Peters, who is out of contract this summer.

"I don't want him [Walker-Peters] to leave," he explained. "He is a very good player for me. I will be happy if he stays."

  8. Man Utd drop to 15thpublished at 15:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Victories for West Ham and Crystal Palace during the current Premier League match round mean Manchester United have dropped to 15th place.

It is a quite incredible situation for the club to find itself in having spent so much on players over the past few years and does not reflect well on United's recruitment policy.

It is going to take some time to sort the mess out and while expectations are limited, evidently, it is Ruben Amorim's job to improve the current situation pretty quickly.

Home games against Southampton and Brighton do offer an opportunity to climb up the table but even if United won both matches, the highest they could get to is 10th.

In case the worst happens tonight, it would be the lowest position United had been in at the end of a match round at such an advanced point of the season since they were 16th heading into the final game of the 1989-90 campaign.

  9. 'I will choose the players I think are best to win' - Amorimpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim shut down questions on the future of forward Marcus Rashford in his pre-match news conference on Wednesday afternoon.

When asked if he was hopeful of a finding a resolution with the English international, Amorim said: "I just want to win tomorrow. My focus is to win tomorrow, I will choose the players that I think are best to win the game tomorrow. I am just focused on that."

Today's Mirror reports that Marcus Rashford has been told he can forget about a move to an English rival - such as Tottenham, West Ham or Chelsea - as the England forward looks for a way out of Manchester United.

  11. Fighting firespublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is another new arrival in the Premier League who has had to hit the ground running.

The Portuguese manager has had to fight fires on and off the pitch since switching Sporting for Old Trafford.

He will be hoping that Sunday's FA Cup win at Arsenal will not be another false dawn when his players face bottom side Southampton tonight.

But, again, transfer talk, namely the future of England forward Marcus Rashford, has dominated the build-up...

  12. No luxury of time for Van Nistelrooypublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Leicester City v Fulham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Ruud Van Nistelrooy knows he needs time at Leicester - but acknowledges he does not have that luxury.

The Foxes boss is "fed up" talking about positive performances without points after their 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

It was a sixth straight defeat in the Premier League and left them in the bottom three ahead of Saturday's visit of Fulham.

Van Nistelrooy - only at the club seven weeks - remains relaxed and confident in his squad's abilities to survive and they are only two points away from the safety line.

Yet the natives are restless at the King Power Stadium, frustrated with the lack of results but also the running of the club, with director of football Jon Rudkin in the firing in line from fans again on Wednesday.

Everton's game against Leicester City at Goodison Park on 1 February could prove to be significant for both teams.

But Foxes boss Ruud van Nistelrooy knows he cannot afford to look so far ahead...

  14. 'Same deficiencies for Everton'published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

    Everton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Alan Stubbs
Former Everton defender on 5 Live Breakfast

I think the way Everton tried to play [against Aston Villa] was better. There was energy from the players. They gave it all, but I think what you did see was the same deficiencies as what Sean Dyche had. Everything just lacked a cutting edge.

I think the one thing that David Moyes, as he alluded to, was that he's only worked with the players for the day and a half and he's not soft, he knows this squad needs a boost. He knows it needs an injection of new players.

I couldn't say it [the result] wasn't what Aston Villa deserved and Everton stayed in the game more than anything but just whenever they went forward they just lacked a little bit of confidence. I think they lacked a little bit of quality and also a little bit of belief.

David knows he's got a big job but I honestly do think with a few additions that Everton will pull clear away from the bottom three places.

Moyes needs to get the best out of struggling players - Harrison, Mykolenko, Tarkowski, Doucoure have been poor for weeks. A spell out of the team would do them good.

  16. Everton's next seven fixturespublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

David Moyes will need a turnaround in form quickly, but Everton's upcoming fixtures look far from favourable, albeit five of them are at Goodison Park:

    • 19 Jan: Tottenham (h)
    • 25 Jan: Brighton (a)
    • 01 Feb: Leicester (h)
    • 08 Feb: Bournemouth (h) - FA Cup
    • 12 Feb: Liverpool (h)
    • 15 Feb: Crystal Palace (a)
    • 22 Feb: Man Utd (h)

  17. Moyes wants to 'address' lack of goals in transfer windowpublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

    Everton 0-1 Aston Villa

Everton manager David MoyesImage source, Getty Images

Everton manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Sport on the importance of adding players in the January transfer window: "I think it's really important if we can add some of that quality and give the players a little lift as well. The crowd were good but I can sense them saying 'we've seen a lot of this before, we need to see something else'.

"I can definitely see we are lacking a level of quality that will give us opportunities or make us more goals or score more goals which we'd like to address if we can do that."

  18. Everton's recent formpublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

    Everton 0-1 Aston Villa

David Moyes knows that Everton's current plight is not down to him.

Their recent form under previous boss Sean Dyche has been miserable - and that's being polite.

They have won just one game in their last seven in all competitions and that was against League One opposition in the FA Cup.

In the Premier League, they are winless since 4 December and from that point on have scored just one goal in the league.

Defensively they have been relatively sound. They've conceded just five goals in their last eight - not the numbers you usually expect from a team languishing just above the relegation zone.

But the lack of goals at the other end of the pitch could really cost them dearly come the end of the season, unless Moyes can work his magic.

    Everton's last seven:

    • Arsenal 0-0 Everton
    • Everton 0-0 Chelsea
    • Man City 1-1 Everton
    • Everton 0-2 Nottingham Forest
    • Bournemouth 1-0 Everton
    • Everton 2-0 Peterborough (FA Cup)
    • Everton 0-1 Aston Villa
  19. Landing in troublepublished at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Ruud van Nistelrooy is not the only new manager under pressure.

David Moyes started his second spell at Everton with a defeat at home to Aston Villa that left the Toffees just one point above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Wolves find themselves back in the bottom three on goal difference after a 3-0 loss at Newcastle - that is despite a positive reaction to the recent appointment of new head coach Vitor Pereira.

And Croatian Ivan Juric accepted an almost impossible task when taking over at basement club Southampton.

    Leicester City

Ruud van NistelrooyImage source, Getty Images

Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy on good performance but no results: "We’ve talked about it for a while now. It's a matter of getting those good performances into points and that's the target because we know where we are in the league. We know only points can get us out of the situation.

"Desperately we want to be out of that situation by the end of May and we know that every game that we don’t collect, that’s one game gone and it makes it more difficult. We also know we are in a position with three or four teams very close together, they are also dropping points and that makes the situation still possible. But it's up to us to start collecting, we are fed up of that [performance and no result]."
