Haha I like the method anon, but on this occasion you're way off! He retired in 2005. The inaugural Europa Conference League season was 2021-22.

Anon: Morning Simon, can you tell me why David Raya is a better goalkeeper than Aaron Ramsdale. As an Arsenal fan I found it embarrassing the way Mikel Arteta was fawning over Raya at the end of a game in which his deficiencies almost cost us. And please, the reason for the clean sheets is a fabulous defence in midfield bolstered by the work that Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard do in midfield.

    Simon stone

It is difficult to pinpoint an individual reason but Arteta clearly wanted Raya in the summer and sees something in him he feels makes his team better. I realise that is quite vague but it is the reality.

Sometimes, it can be a quite technical reason, like opening your body in a slightly different way to take or give a pass, the speed of the pass, the accuracy of it. Sometimes it can be basic trust in a player to do what they are being asked. It goes beyond making big saves.

Raya made a mistake yesterday and it cost a goal. Arteta may argue Raya was a reason why Arsenal were 3-0 up – or why they are top of the Premier League. I don’t feel you can isolate individual mistakes to highlight whether a decision has worked or not. You have to look at the bigger picture. We will never know if Arsenal would be in their current position with Ramsdale in goal, we know they are with Raya.

    Kurt Zouma?

Sorry Mark. He's got a Champions League medal with Chelsea (2021), and a Europa Conference League title with West Ham (2023), but he's never won a Europa League.

  6. Raya's reaction to mistake 'outstanding' - Artetapublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 29 April

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised David Raya for his reaction after the goalkeeper's error in their north London derby win over Tottenham.

The Gunners were leading 3-0 when Raya tried a dinked pass into midfield but found Tottenham's Cristian Romero, who placed the ball past the Spaniard.

Son Heung-min then scored a penalty but Arsenal held on to remain top of the Premier League, albeit by just one point after Manchester City's win at Nottingham Forest later on Sunday.

"It became a game of chaos but we are lucky to have the keeper we have," Arteta told Sky Sports.

"He made an individual error but after that the way he played was outstanding. He was magnificent."

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Arteta added: “David Raya stood up and took six, seven crosses and that is what we want, and if you are going to take risks you have that reaction - I am really proud of them.”

Ken: Morning Simon, what do you think are the odds on my team (Newcastle) holding on to Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak this summer? I feel we could really kick on with one or two quality additions to the current squad.

    Simon Stone expert view

I think it is going to be difficult to keep both for two reasons. Firstly, they have both proved themselves capable of playing at the highest level and while Newcastle’s Champions League hopes are not completely over, it would require both an improbable sequence of European results and Tottenham repeatedly losing games, which I don’t think it realistic.

Then we come back to the old Profit and Sustainability question. In order to raise money to reinforce Eddie Howe’s squad and offer bigger contracts, players need to be sold. Which ones can generate the most profit? That tends to be home grown players as they didn’t cost a transfer fee.

But Isak and Guimaraes are two of Newcastle’s most valuable assets. And there are bound to be offers for them. It is a tricky one as I doubt Howe would want to sell but if Newcastle keep them both, they will have done very well.

No luck, he's got two out of three:

Europa Conference League - Roma, 2022

Europa League - Manchester United, 2017

David: For Man Utd and Erik Ten Hag, is there a chance that a mutual separation suits all parties now. Other big clubs looking for a manager, INEOS likely wanting their own manager and a really poor season.

    Simon Stone expert view

I don’t see that as particularly likely, David. Ten Hag has given every impression recently of fighting to stay in his job. Manchester United remains one of the biggest, most attractive jobs in the world. Why would you give up on that?

The matter will not be his to decide clearly as INEOS, through Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Sir Dave Brailsford and Jason Wilcox, will have the final say.

However, if United do decide a parting of the ways is needed, Ten Hag will get a decent job. He did well at Ajax and many would say the Old Trafford hotseat is an impossible one to excel in during his time at the club.

    J

Sorry J. Tammy Abraham's a great shout, but he made his professional debut in 2016.

He did win the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 though. And then lifted the Europa Conference League with Roma the following season.

Sloe: In the Arsenal match yesterday, did Richarlison really "nut" Gabriel or was it less bad than it initially looked? Nothing from VAR or on MOTD2. I thought in the past that acts of violent conduct are punished retrospectively if missed in match.

    Simon Stone

Ha. Hiya Sloe. No. He didn’t ‘nut’ him. He ran into him. It might have been deliberate and Gabriel might have stood his ground but there was nothing more to it than that.

On a wider point, in the VAR world, I am not sure which incidents could be looked at retrospectively. I don’t recall any recently. The VAR is supposed to check everything in real time.

Rich: Who is Mourinho going to manage next season? Tottenham?

    Simon Stone expert view

Why would Mourinho go back to Tottenham? Or more to the point, why would Tottenham want him?

I would have thought an international job would be good for him but suspect he thinks he has more to give at club level. I hope he doesn’t go to Saudi Arabia and would welcome him coming back to the Premier League, I am just not entirely sure where he would go.

He is still box office – and he is still a good manager. Roma did well and reached European finals under him. I just think players respond to different managerial techniques these days – and Roma’s improvement under Daniele De Rossi shows that.

Premier League referee Anthony Taylor will be in charge of Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League semi-final first-leg encounter with PSG on Wednesday, with Stuart Attwell the VAR.

In a largely English team, Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will be the assistant referees, with David Coote the assistant VAR.

All five have been named by UEFA amongst the match officials for Euro 2024.

It further underlines the trust European football’s governing body has in Attwell, who was identified as a Luton fan by Nottingham Forest in their furious rant about the official in the aftermath of their 2-0 defeat at Everton earlier this month.
