  1. 'Chelsea are flying'published at 14:05 British Summer Time 15 May

    Brighton v Chelsea (19:45 BST)

    Chris Sutton BBC graphic

Brighton got a good draw with Newcastle United at the weekend, but their results in the second half of the season have not been great.

There has been a lot of talk about the future of Seagulls boss Roberto de Zerbi but, as I have said before, perhaps his stock is not what it once was. He is not being linked with every big vacant managerial position in Europe any more.

In contrast, Chelsea are flying. They have got sixth place in their sights and they have certainly found some consistency, even if it has come a little later in the season than they would have wanted.

I actually fancy them here, for what would be their fourth win on the spin.

    Sutton's prediction:1-2

Tonight's games in the Premier League will have no impact on the title race, but they are important in terms of who gets their hands on the remaining European places.

A point is all Celtic need, but had Rangers got at least a draw in Saturday's Old Firm derby, Brendan Rodgers would have been heading to Rugby Park with some degree of trepidation.

Kilmarnock have already beaten his side twice this season there - indeed, they have only lost one of their four meetings overall.

  4. 'Rangers have to win trophies'published at 13:52 British Summer Time 15 May

Kilmarnock v Celtic (Wed, 19:30 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Second placed Rangers beat Dundee on Tuesday night to prolong Celtic’s wait to be crowned Premiership champions.

Rangers almost gifted the title to Celtic against Dundee after going two goals down but their fightback means Brendan Rodgers' Celtic side has the chance to haul themselves over the line in Ayrshire.

After Rangers' 5-2 win, former Celtic striker, Dion Dublin said on the Football Daily Podcast: "Rangers had a bit to do tonight.

"It's a huge football club, the expectations of the football fans is huge, just like Celtic, they have to win trophies every year and not accept anything less, rightly so."

Celtic visit Kilmarnock tonight, needing one point to secure the Scottish Premiership title.

As it stands, Celtic are top of the table - three points clear of Rangers, with tonight's game in hand before Saturday's final fixtures.

Pep Lijnders had been seen as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, but it was expected he would leave the club at the same time as the German boss to pursue his own career in management.

Red Bull's sporting director Bernhard Seonbuchner said: "He is a real football expert and has been a huge influence on a very successful time for Liverpool with his qualities in developing players.

"The discussions with him were a great success, and there was a clear agreement on the way we want to play, what we are about as a club, and where we want to go together."

Pep Lijnders will be joined by Vitor Matos in Salzburg. Matos will become Lijnder's assistant coach after four-and-a-half years as an elite development coach at Liverpool.

Lijnders said: "I am very proud to become the new head coach of FC Red Bull Salzburg.

"This is a real privilege for me. After PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto and Liverpool FC, I am now moving to another exceptional club with a really good structure and a particular focus on youth development.

"I want to develop a mentality with the team that places a lot of emphasis on attacking style of play and where passion and hunger for success are the basis of everything."

Clinging on to the slim hope of UEFA cup football feels like supporting pre-Abramovic Bates' Chelsea, not what I'd hoped for Boehly's Billion pound team. Amazing what you can get these days for a cool 9 figure sum?! Still, excited as always.

  11. European elite 'must respect Villa'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 15 May

Kenny Swain, who won the European Cup with Aston Villa in 1982, believes the Champions League big boys must respect Unai Emery's side.

Villa qualified for next season's Champions League after Tottenham's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday guaranteed them fourth place.

They last played in Europe's elite competition 41 years ago in 1982-83 after Swain helped Villa lift the trophy following a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam the season before.

"When others look at the history of English clubs there’s only six clubs who have won it – and I played for three of them (Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Villa)," said right-back Swain, who made 179 appearances for Villa in four years.

"Some may look at Aston Villa and think: ‘where have they come from?’ We had all of that in 1981-82 when we were up against clubs thinking: ‘who are this lot?’ At Nottingham Forest they would have had the same.

"If they look down the history of the club they will realise Villa are something, they have actually won it.

“Even to stay in the top half of the Premier League takes some doing but to finish in the top five is an amazing achievement, if you can get into the top four and make that a consistent objective, that is the kind of objective Villa will be setting now.

"Maybe not winning the Premier League, although there’s no harm in setting that as an objective, but to continue the progress they have made."

  12. European permutations - what can be decided on Wednesday?published at 13:16 British Summer Time 15 May

So, Aston Villa clinched the fourth and final Champions League place thanks to Tottenham's defeat by Manchester City.

But can any of the other European places be decided tonight?

If Newcastle and Chelsea lose this evening, then Spurs will be guaranteed a fifth place finish and a spot in next season's Europa League.

Whatever happens tonight, Newcastle and Chelsea know they cannot be absolutely sure of European football until the final day of the season.

However, goal difference means that should Newcastle beat Manchester United, and Chelsea lose at Brighton, it would take a minimum 12-goal swing on the final day for the Magpies to be deprived of sixth place.

    It's all to play for!

Plans for the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup were also discussed.

The 16-team tournament will be held every four years, starting in January 2024, and fall during the domestic season for European leagues, between the Women’s Champions League group stages and the knockout rounds.

The USA's National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season usually begins in March.

Fifa announced its intention to create a global women's club competition in December 2022 and a Fifa congress confirmed the plans on Wednesday in Bangkok.

Barcelona are the current European champions, NY Gotham FC the reigning NWSL champions and Brazilian side Corinthians are the holders of the Copa Libertadores Femenina.

Fifa is to set to establish a working group to look at the impact of playing competitive domestic matches overseas.

A legal settlement agreed between Fifa and match promoter Relevant Sports in the USA has, in the words of Premier League chief executive Richard Masters, "left the door ajar" for league games to be played in different countries.

Whilst the Premier League say they have no plans to do so, despite being the instigators of the infamous ‘39th game’ idea during Richard Scudamore’s time at the helm, La Liga are already planning overseas games for the 2025-26 campaign.

La Liga have revived their plans to play league fixtures overseas after cancelling Barcelona's league match against Girona in 2019, which was due to be held in Miami.

Fifa had previously been opposed to the idea, feeling it had the potential to take valuable finance away from domestic clubs.
