Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou had played down the importance of qualifying for the Champions League, but see below for see what it meant to Aston Villa.

Villa's players and staff were holding their annual awards night at Villa Park on Tuesday and celebrated as the result at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was confirmed.

The club posted photos on social media of Emery and the players cheering and spraying champagne.

That table also shows that Tottenham's defeat means that fourth-placed Aston Villa can no longer be caught so have qualified for the Champions League for the first time (since being rebranded from the European Cup).

Tottenham had been the only team who could have overtaken Villa but are now five points behind Unai Emery's side with one game remaining.

Villa have not reached Uefa's premier club competition since it rebranded from the European Cup to the Champions League in 1991-92.

They last played in the European Cup 41 years ago in 1982-83 having won the competition the season before.

Villa did finish second and fourth in the Premier League in 1992-93 and 1995-96 respectively, but in both those seasons only first was good enough to reach the Champions League.

Manchester City have been playing catch-up for the last few weeks as they have had a game in hand but their win over Tottenham means they have gone back above Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

It will be the sixth time in the last seven seasons (apart from 2019-20) that City have gone into the final day of the season as leaders. They have gone on to win the title in each of those previous campaigns.

City host West Ham on Sunday while Arsenal host Everton (both 16:00 BST) and a win for the Blues will secure a fourth straight title, but a draw could open the door for the Gunners as they have a better goal difference.

Rangers' fightback means they are back within three points of Celtic, with a game left.

But their Old Firm rivals have a game in hand, which they play later away to Kilmarnock (19:30 BST), when they have the chance to secure a third straight Scottish title.

Rangers recovered from a two-goal deficit to beat Dundee and avoid an Ibrox embarrassment, while also prolonging Celtic’s wait to be crowned Premiership champions.

Manager Philippe Clement revealed he was "very angry" at half-time, before his side went on to score four goals for an ultimately comfortable victory.

The visitors struck twice in two first-half minutes through defenders Jordan McGhee and Antonio Portales to threaten a first win at Ibrox since 2001.

However, Ross McCausland’s toe-poke just before half-time eased the pressure on the hosts before Cyriel Dessers nodded Rangers level six minutes after the restart.

It was Todd Cantwell, who whipped Rangers into the lead when his cross flew in, and Scott Wright secured all three points with a late double.

Manchester City moved within one win of a historic fourth successive Premier League title with victory at Tottenham.

Erling Haaland's second-half double settled a tight encounter in which Spurs' hopes of a top-four finish ended, and sent Aston Villa into the Champions League for the first time next season.

Pep Guardiola's reigning champions will lift the trophy again if they beat West Ham United at Etihad Stadium on Sunday (16:00 BST).

Spurs performed with great credit, despite knowing bitter rivals Arsenal would be the beneficiaries of a good result, and it took a superb display from City's deputy goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to keep them at bay after he replaced Ederson, who took a heavy knock in a collision with Cristian Romero.

Haaland broke the deadlock when he tapped in Kevin de Bruyne's cross six minutes after the break, Ortega's heroics then keeping City in front as he saved twice from Dejan Kulusevski before denying Son Heung-min when he was clean through.

City then broke clear in stoppage time to put themselves on the brink of glory, Haaland scoring his 38th goal of the season from the penalty spot after Jeremy Doku was fouled by Pedro Porro.

Manchester City moved to the brink of claiming a record fourth straight English title last night as they won 2-0 at Tottenham.

But it was far from plain sailing for the defending champions as Manuel Akanji almost suffered a Steven Gerrard moment before City's substitute goalkeeper came to the rescue.
