Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

Sam Burns is down the left of 15 off the tee. Cannot believe you will see him tomorrow morning. He's been poor. Over to Patrick Cantlay now, and he fades that too much - into the right rough.

Shane Lowry peels one down the right. Perfect.

Rory McIlroy climbs into one and although he smothers it a touch left, it's got a lovely lie in the semi-rough.

Rahm has played well all day today. Six birdies this afternoon, three for Straka. They’ve played some really good golf.

The Americans didn’t really put much pressure on them in the front nine, but they were holing the putts those last two holes. The Europeans stood up to it and holed the putts when they had to.

Two finished matches, one blue and one red, on course one blue and one all square

All to play for in the final two pairings out on the course.

  4. Fleetwood & Rose maintain narrow advantagepublished at 22:10 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (15) 1UP

Neither Justin Rose or Tommy Fleetwood are able to convert birdie chances to go 2 holes up and it's as you were as the players head down the 16th.

  5. Straka clinches point for Europepublished at 22:09 BST 26 September

    Rahm/Straka bt Scheffler/Spaun 3&2

    Never in doubt.

In it goes from Sepp Straka - and Europe move up to four points.

  6. Postpublished at 22:08 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (15)

Well, well, Scottie Scheffler has dumped his in the hole straight away.

Sepp Straka has to hole now to win the match - or we carry onto the 17th.

  7. Escape for Europepublished at 22:08 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (14)

Shane Lowry misses with his chip. The three is there but that is unlikely to be any use.

    Patrick Cantlay for the win.

    AND HE MISSES!

That was Doug Sanders length. I doubt a shorter putt will be missed all week. It was two feet. An escape for Europe. BIG escape.

  8. Postpublished at 22:05 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP

JJ Spaun and Scottie Scheffler need to win all of the three final holes to rescue a half for the US.

They've both produced great tee shots on the par-three 16th inside 10 feet - only for Sepp Straka to outdo them both. He'll have six feet to clinch a blue point.

  9. Cantlay on firepublished at 22:02 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (13)

I said about three hours ago Patrick Cantlay was a streetfighter and he has proved me correct.

He follows up his birdie with a dart on the short 14th. Six feet away. You have to tip your cap to the guy.

Shane Lowry is through the back but has a makeable chip, and Rory McIlroy is 20 feet below the cup.

One of those will almost certainly need to drop for Europe to stay all square in this one.

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (14) 1UP

The momentum feels like it is with Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood now in this match and the English duo both find the green with their approaches.

Both will have birdie chances from mid-range with Ben Griffin facing a putt of around 40 feet.

Can Bryson DeChambeau put the US duo back in the mix here? Hmmm not sure that was in the script as he chunks his iron well right into the rough.

It has been advantage USA over the past half hour or so - with Rory McIlroy's bete noire from Rome Patrick Cantlay to the fore.

Almost identical to the third hole again. Looked like it would be a good putt but just slightly dived at the end of the hole and caught the full lip.

Really devastating moment there – that’s going to maybe prove to be crucial.

  13. US level anchor matchpublished at 21:56 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (13)

Shane Lowry is first to putt on the 13th. It's downhill and there is break, so he is really just lagging this up and giving Rory McIlroy a run at it.

Mission accomplished, but first here is Patrick Cantlay with his birdie attempt. And he holes it!

Suddenly McIlroy has this to half the hole. When he was standing there leaning on his putter thinking it was for a win a minute ago.

It horseshoes out. One of the most aggressive horseshoes you'll ever see. I swear it did two laps of the hole.

All square in the bottom match.

Not for the first time this afternoon Jon Rahm has delivered to dampen American spirits.

    What’s Spanish for ‘the postman’?

And for the second time in two holes, the home fans have felt sadder than seeing their letterbox empty on birthday morning thanks to European putters.

Jon Rahm stepped up to it, he had that.

Up the hill is never an easy putt but what a putt he holed.

  16. Postpublished at 21:51 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (12)

Third shot from Rory McIlroy on the par-five 13th skips up to six feet. Tidy.

The Cranberries' song 'Zombie' - the anthem of the Ireland rugby team - rings around the green.

Fire engines drape American flag at Bethpage

In case the Europeans had forgotten where they were, the Americans have decided to give them a reminder as the players enter the home stretch.

An enormous Stars and Stripes flag is draped between two fire ladders - loaned from the local Farmingdale station - when they head from the 14th green to the 15th tee.

Is that designed as an intimidation tactic before the business end? Feels like it.

This little pocket of Bethpage State Park is tight, intimate and possibly the spot where the much-vaunted ‘bearpit’ could be stoked - if the US team give the crowd something to roar about this weekend.

  18. Rahm matches Scheffler with brilliant puttpublished at 21:50 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (15)

But Jon Rahm can ruin the party for Scottie Scheffler as he lines up a putt from a similar distance.

And what a response! He's only gone and downed it.

That guarantees Europe a half point.

He loved that. Balloon burst for the Americans.

Time to play like the world number one!

Scottie Scheffler finally drops a putt and the emotion comes out as it lands from 15 feet. He clenches his fist, holds his putter aloft and strides from the green.

What an absolute beauty of a birdie to that pin location. Tommy is inspired.

He was a little bit down on himself with his putting early on but that putt that he made on 11 revived him and now he’s walking with a pep in his step that I’ve not seen all day.
