Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

  1. Europeans edge aheadpublished at 21:46 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (14) 1UP

Ben Griffin looks sort of cool in his sunglasses although they are due to an eyesight issue and not worn for fashion.

The American does not like that though...as he clips out of the sand and watches his ball come to a standstill almost immediately after flopping onto the green.

Bryson almost raises the roof, with a long putt that's maybe a ball width wide of the cup...but the cheers and scoreboard turn blue with Tommy Fleetwood nailing his birdie putt and clenching his fist in delight.

  2. USA notch second pointpublished at 21:45 BST 26 September

    6&5 Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (F)

Shadows lengthening a little on the greens at Bethpage Black as it ticks towards 5pm local time. Thoughts will soon be turning to Long Island ice-teas for those travelling European fans.

Cameron Young has been a beacon of hope for the USA in the fourballs, though.

A beefy approach shot to the green from Young at the 13th leaves him with two putts to win the hole, and the match. He misses his first, but Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard decide to throw in the towel.

The USA have their second Ryder Cup point on the board.

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP

Reaching now-or never time for world number one Scottie Scheffler and partner JJ Spaun.

Well, Scheffler is in closest of the fourball and has about 15 feet for birdie.

But that'll involve using his putter.

Which has been far from reliable today.

Europe and US cannot be split

This game looks like it is going down to the wire.

And they have been impossible to split throughout.

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (13)

Justin Rose has a nine iron in his hands as he tries to clip in towards the 161-yard par-three 14th.

His effort loops up and lands some 23 feet from the flag to provide Europe with a healthy opening shot to the hole which is bettered by Tommy Fleetwood's laser-guided approach to seven feet.

With Ben Griffin splashing into the left greenside bunker and Bryson coming up 45 feet short, it's advantage Europe again.

  6. 'Everybody's coming alive'published at 21:36 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (12)

    Oliver Wilson

It is going backwards and forward a little bit. It’s kind of got the feeling this is going to go all the way.

    Everybody's coming alive.

  7. US fight backpublished at 21:34 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (12)

Europe struggling on the 12th. The umpire signalled wide on Rory McIlroy's birdie attempt and with him weighing up his par putt, Patrick Cantlay rolls in his three - so that's back to one down.

Europe look too powerful in this match, but this is matchplay and it can turn round very quickly.

It would be a significant blow is the US could manage that.

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (13)

Justin Rose's caddie Mark Fulcher asks him to "hit me a gorgeous shot" into the 13th and the Englishman responds by zipping into around 12 feet.

Tommy Fleetwood now spins one into around five feet but just as Europe are looking good after their earlier trouble off the tee Ben Griffin plays a lovely chip and run to gimme range.

This is such a hard-fought encounter and honours are even on the 13th.

  9. Spaun keeps US in itpublished at 21:28 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (14)

JJ Spaun needs to hole this nine footer to halve the hole and hole it he does.

Great response to Sepp Straka's stunner but Europe remain three up.

While a fair few Americans are heading off to beat the traffic, the galleries on the 14th remain jam packed.

Neither Rahm and Straka finding the top deck is met with glee, while Spaun’s peach buoys the home crowd.

Another cheer goes up when the fans watch Thomas provides further daylight for the hosts in his match.

Then Straka’s putter bursts the bubble spectacularly.

  11. What a shot!published at 21:26 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (13)

Sepp Straka - take a bow!

A huge fist pump follows his 30 foot putt hitting the bottom of the cup.

A sickening blow to the American duo.

  12. USA go five uppublished at 21:25 BST 26 September

    5UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (12)

This might be a day to forget for USA, but one to remember for Cameron Young.

Difficult birdie chances from distance are missed by Ludvig Aberg and Justin Thomas but Young's approach shot leaves him with something altogether easier.

The 28-year-old American duly putts in from around eight feet to increase the USA's grip on this match.

Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard have simply not been able to lay a glove on their opponents today.

Scottie Scheffler goes one better than Jon Rahm and actually finds the sand. This just isn't the world number one's day, is it?

  14. Postpublished at 21:21 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (13)

Sepp Straka is first up on this short par-three. It's got lovely shape on it but just not enough as it falls 30 feet short. Jon Rahm's tee shot didn't go to plan as he also opts for the nine iron. It's about a foot shy of the bunker to the left of the green.

Can Team USA capitalise? Yes! The crowd loves seeing JJ Spaun's ball drop under nine feet from the hole.

  15. US fans heading for exitspublished at 21:19 BST 26 September

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport golf news reporter at Bethpage Black

Booze, sunshine and the Americans getting pasted are the ingredients that have combined to create a surprisingly weary home crowd.

"Man, I’ve had enough for one day," heaves one New Yorker.

Hundreds of fans are streaming ahead of the first match as they come up the 13th - most getting a leg on to bag a decent vantage point further ahead... but many are also heading towards the far end, where the exits are.

  16. How much will Europe be leading by?published at 21:18 BST 26 September

We've not got long left here and it looks like Europe will be taking a lead into day two.

    But by how much?

If the scores stay as they are, it'll be 5½ to 2½ and an advantage of three.

    What do you reckon?

Thumbs up for a lead of two and a half or more, thumbs down for less.

Scoreboard - two blue and one red
  17. 'Scheffler yet to make a birdie this afternoon'published at 21:17 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (13)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

It keeps coming down to Rahm and Scheffler.

Scottie Scheffler has yet to make a birdie today in the fourballs today this afternoon. Try and get your head around that fact.

  18. Postpublished at 21:16 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (13)

Scottie Scheffler has the touch but didn't quite have the line there. Perfect technique but his chip doesn't drop.

Jon Rahm to win the hole and move Europe four up but it drifts left.

This is no gimme either but Rahm doesn't miss those.

  19. Postpublished at 21:15 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (12)

    How often does that happen?

A chance to win a hole passes you by and then you make a complete hash off the tee. Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose split the fairway on the 13th, with former US Open winner Rose finding a fairway bunker and his compatriot in the rough.

  20. Lowry regains Euro cushionpublished at 21:14 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (11)

Shane Lowry flights a beautiful iron into the 11th and makes no mistake with the putt.

The US were within one hole for approximately 11 minutes.

Europe regain their two-hole lead and are getting more pumped with every stride.
