Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose speaking after beating Ben Griffin and Bryson DeChambeau in the fourballs.

JR: "Rome '23. Sun is going down Friday afternoon the 18th hole, and that one was for Tommy that time, not the rest of the team. He carried me today. I felt like I put the ball in play nicely off the tee, but Tommy made some huge putts in the right moments, and you know, that was a huge turnaround match.

"Obviously I think my moment of the day, I guess, was seven when Ben holed that 60-footer and I was able to pour it in from 40 foot to not go two down, I felt kept us into the match. We knew we were coming into a difficult stretch of holes. The first few holes were playing somewhat easy, and then the course showed its teeth a little bit and that's where Tommy's ball-striking and our resolve really came through."

TF: "The scoreboard is what counts, and I think just our team as a collective, I think we obviously feel very prepared, and we've been looking forward to this day for a long time now. So to have got off to a good start feels great.

"Yeah, of course, I mean, their team is stacked with amazing players. So whoever it is, the match going to be difficult, and the points mean so much. You know, just to be out there today with Justin, I wanted to do that for a very, very long time, play with Justin in a Ryder Cup. It was a great match, it really, really was. So yeah, just happy to have contributed another point to overall score we want to get to."

  2. 'Tie is a great result'published at 23:18 BST 26 September

It was a great battle, backwards and forwards and whilst it was one-on-one for a large part of it the other guys played their part.

At the end I thought Rory was going to come through and finish with three birdies, but a tie is a great result.

    Rory McIlroy's putt MISSES.

It slid past on the low side.

The first halved match of the 2025 Ryder Cup. That feels about right for that game, especially given Patrick Cantlay's heroics.

    Now Sam Burns.

Remember he is a magnificent putter.

    But it slides past.

Europe will gain a half at least.

    But could win.

Too shy with pace. Shane Lowry had that is it had had more pace.

Four secured. But that would have been so handy!

If Shane Lowry boxes this putt his jig of delight will be something to behold.

Patrick Cantlay's horror approach actually bounced out of the long rough and into the sand so was a lot easier than it could have been.

He splashes out and has a putt for a four.

But really this is about Sam Burns and Rory McIlroy.

Sam Burns bails him out with a nice approach to about 16 feet.

Rory McIlroy just gets inside Burns, and will putt last with a great read on the American's line.

That is Patrick Cantlay's worst shot of the day.

That was very possibly the unmentionables.

In all sorts of trouble short and right. Not making three from there. Or if he does it is a superb shot from the sand.

Solid approach by Shane Lowry. Looks like a two-putt four.

Shadows across the fairway make this scene look like a painting.

And to be fair by the time Patrick Cantlay hits his approach, the paint could have dried on the canvas.

    Man he is deliberate.

The mental fortitude of Rory McIlroy is just on display.

He is not going to let his team lose. You can tell while he’s talking to the press in the media centre, he is going to lead this team.

If Niall Horan isn't on stage, it seems he's watching top-class sport.

The One Directioner has been spotted by my BBC Sport colleague Will Hobson as they have been trailing Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry round Bethpage Black.

Sure they will both agree that matches going to the final hole is What Makes [the Ryder Cup] Beautiful.

It’s fantastic – it’s golf at the highest level under the most extreme pressure. They’re knocking in birdies putt after putt, following each other.

It’s just fantastic, it’s great fun to watch.

Shane Lowry's drive clings onto the edge of a bunker. Above ground but an awkward stance likely.

Rory McIlroy could not have placed his drive any better.

How could ANYONE not love golf??!!

  15. Who's going to win this point?published at 23:01 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (17)

    OK then, what's happening here?

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry to win - hit thumbs up

Halved match or Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns to take it - hit thumbs down.

    Sam Burns find the semi-rough.

    Patrick Cantlay finds the fairway.

US captain Keegan Bradley looks like a man who's about to miss the plane he is taking to get to his own wedding.

Sam Burns is a wonderful putter but this putt just grew two extra feet after Rory McIlroy drained that.

Can he hold his nerve and stay all square?

Yes, yes he can. It just grabs enough of the left edge to fall in.

Down 18 we go. How's your nerves?

    Rory McIlroy now.

    This is massive.

Not much break in this. Right lip, no more.

    AND IT IS IN.

Patrick Cantlay gets the three for his side.

Did Shane Lowry learn much from his putt on a similar line? All of Europe hopes so. But no. Didn't borrow enough.
