Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

  1. Postpublished at 21:13 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (12)

A complete misread from Tommy Fleetwood, who looks a tad bemused as his putt to win the 12th hole strays right.

This is now looking like a pivotal match in the grand scheme of things.

  2. Postpublished at 21:13 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (12)

How unlucky is that from JJ Spaun?! He lines up his approach shot, it takes one bounce and bounces out on the lip of the cup.

  3. Postpublished at 21:08 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (12)

Sepp Straka's second shot doesn't quite go to plan as he finds the rough to the right before the green starts.

JJ Spaun goes one better and finds the fairway and lands his ball 20 yards closer to the hole. What does Scottie Scheffler have for us? Well, it's a stunner and he's on the green in two.

But, whatever Scheffler can do, Jon Rahm can do better today as he goes to within 11 feet of the hole. What a shot!

  4. Postpublished at 21:06 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (11)

Bryson DeChambeau has not really got going yet and he doesn't like his iron into the 12th. It's on the green, his main complaint is that it's 40 feet further away from the pin than Tommy Fleetwood.

With Justin Rose and Ben Griffin putting from a different zip code as well could Tommy do the business on back-to-back holes for the European team?

  5. USA go four uppublished at 21:04 BST 26 September

    4UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (11)

Justin Thomas plonks his approach shot at the 11th beyond the pin and the crowd whoop as the ball spins back towards the hole.

With a five-foot birdie on offer the American duly slides in the putt. All the momentum in match three is with the home side.

  6. Postpublished at 21:00 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (12)

It's par-five time for this first match with all four players finding the fairway - Scottie Scheffler the closest to the green.

  7. How it standspublished at 21:00 BST 26 September

Scoreboard, two blue and one red

That slice of red is the crumb of comfort for the legions of US fans at Bethpage Black.

Patrick Cantlay's putt at the 10th to trim Rory Mcilroy and Shane Lowry's lead has given them a little extra encouragement though.

  8. World number ones at the Ryder Cuppublished at 20:58 BST 26 September

Since 1999, the top-ranked player in the Ryder Cup field has won just 37% of their matches, an underwhelming record of 21-29-7.

The way this is going, world number one Scottie Scheffler will make that losses number a nice round 30.

  9. US get hole back in bottom matchpublished at 20:56 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (10)

Gorgeous chip from Rory McIlroy secures the four for Europe at the 10th.

Sam Burns rolls in his five-foot par putt and that gives Patrick Cantlay the chance to have a go at his putt for three.

He makes that to get back to one down.

  10. 'Come on Scottie, show up!'published at 20:56 BST 26 September

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

Can hear a few shouts from the Americans in the crowd saying: "Come on Scottie, show up."

They're beginning to maybe, not turn on him, but expect him to do something.

  11. Postpublished at 20:56 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (12)

What can world number one Scottie Scheffler muster up? Not much.

    Over to you, Jon Rahm...

It's a decent effort from 22 feet but he leaves it inches short and the hole is halved.

  12. Postpublished at 20:53 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (11)

JJ Spaun lines up his putt and he's under pressure with Jon Rahm 10 or so yards closer to the pin. He's got the right length on it didn't have enough movement to the right.

Sepp Straka now with a 34-foot putt but he's got the break on that all wrong.

  13. Postpublished at 20:52 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Griffin A/S Fleetwood/Rose

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

That has ripped the heart out of the American team.

And I have to say, it did feel that it was coming from Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

  14. Fleetwood draws Europe levelpublished at 20:52 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (11)

It feels a little bit like now or never for Europe in this match which has been on a knife edge.

And Tommy Fleetwood's putt is just perfect and topples into the hole to remove the red that was highlighting the scoreboard for this match.

    3UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (10)

Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard are hanging in there at the moment.

They manage to halve the 10th hole but have plenty to do three down with a maximum of eight holes remaining.

Cameron Young and Justin Thomas look in control of this one which may end up being a vital foothold for USA in the contest come the end of the day.

  16. Postpublished at 20:49 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 3UP (11)

Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and JJ Spaun all find the fairway with Sepp Straka hitting the rough to the left.

Spaun, Scheffler and Straka all land on the green but it's Rahm who gives himself a 22 foot putt.

The Spaniard is in stunning form.

  17. Postpublished at 20:46 BST 26 September

    1UP Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (10)

Like throwing darts for Justin Rose on the 11th. The Englishman whips his approach out of the rough into around four feet from the pin.

With Tommy Fleetwood also in close it's advantage Europe again here especially with Ben Griffin spinning his back down down and then off the dance floor and Bryson facing a chip from 15 feet or so.

  18. Fourballs show European depthpublished at 20:44 BST 26 September

Remember the days when Europe would have five or six star players in their team and ride them hard over the first two days so that they were exhausted by Sunday's singles?

    No more.

Look at the quality Luke Donald has felt able to leave out of this session: Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.

They'll come back in tomorrow morning and allow some others - Ludvig Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood the likely pair - to be rotated out.

And that won't notably weaken the line-up.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy may well play all five sessions - they are not normal - but they will likely be the only ones and Europe will be fresh for the pivotal Sunday singles.

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (9)

Want to see Rory McIlroy doing Rory McIlroy things?

This is where he let his emotions come out - and check out the grin on partner Shane Lowry's face.

  20. Euros retain cushionpublished at 20:39 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (9)

Remember the gimme fun from earlier with Patrick Cantlay? Team USA return the favour and see an absolute tiddler from Rory McIlroy.

He makes no mistake and laughs to Shane Lowry as he picks the ball out the hole. Europe stay two up at the turn.
