Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

Shane Lowry is next to Patrick Cantlay. Probably out of it.

    Over to Rory McIlroy. Again.

He buttons a seven-iron and I swear he was walking after that before it fully left the grooves on his club.

About 10 feet away, below the hole. Burns is closer but McIlroy will have a great look at the two he may well need to half the hole.

Sam Burns remembers he is a world-class player and throws a dart on the par-three 17th. Six feet away. No more than.

Now it's you-know-who. The capped wonder.

He goes after a fade and overdoes it. Outside chance of a two. But his partner is close.

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (17) 1UP

Ben Griffin has to go close here and he does. He squeezes his iron shot just inside Tommy Fleetwood's ball but it trickles back a few inches.

Nothing doing for Bryson though. What a finish this is.

Just imagining Shane Lowry saying "I had that" to Rory McIlroy with a cheeky grin on his face as they walk to the 17th tee.

The man from Esker Hills will absolutely have been glad his partner made that three and saved him the task!

Stunning from Tommy Fleetwood. The Englishman's heart must be pounding but he plays a wonderful wedge into five feet on the 18th.

Next up is Justin Rose and with the pressure slightly off he nips into around nine feet.

    Rory McIlroy follows him in!

    Hole halved.

    Stays all square.

    Epic match.

Nothing doing for Sam Burns. As expected.

Patrick Cantlay is a different beast as we know. Needs to drop this in the left side of the cup.

And he does. Of course he does.

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (17) 1UP

Ben Griffin's drive is as straight as you like down the 18th allowing Bryson DeChambeau to go for the big biff. That's heading right, long and into the cabbage patch stuff.

Both European balls follow Griffin's path down the middle of the fairway.

Hello. Shane Lowry comes to the party with a dart to 10 feet. That's a great marker for Rory McIlroy. He will go pin seeking.

Patrick Cantlay's approach lands 14 feet away. An unlikely three, but it's Cantlay so let's assume he will will that in somehow.

Sam Burns had a great angle in but is just not on his game. Sixteen feet below the pin.

And now McIlroy. Terrible angle actually but just a flick with a short iron and he feathers that in between the fringe and pin. A great look for a three. Europe have two great looks for a three, in fact.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (15)

This was the moment at the 13th that Rory McIlroy's miss from short range opened the door for their American opponents.

It seemed to defy gravity as it trundled around the rim of the cup and somehow stayed afloat.

  11. 'What a play from DeChambeau'published at 22:38 BST 26 September

    Shaun Micheel

What a play. After really not playing well the last few holes, to step up there on that par-three, what a difficult hole that is and that pin is really not accessible.

But it just shows you what he’s made of, to keep grinding it out. [DeChambeau] going to play until the end.

  12. DeChambeau sets up tense finalepublished at 22:37 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (17) 1UP

If Justin Rose or Tommy Fleetwood were to somehow hole out here it would bring the curtain down on this match.

Rose is up first with his wedge but he's not given that a chance and his ball pulls up well shy of the hole.Fleetwood looks exasperated as his long right-to-left effort is way short of pace.

Can Ben Griffin drain his putt? Nope. But Bryson DeChambeau can with his ball pirouetting round the cup before dropping to keep the match alive.

Better from Sam Burns. Finds the short stuff. Patrick Cantlay follows suit. Of course he does.

Shane Lowry pushes his a bit. Not terminal but not ideal. Rory McIlroy pummels his drive just off the fairway but in good shape.

The amount of adrenaline pumping through his veins right now is probably illegal.

  14. Back in the balance?published at 22:30 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (16) 2UP

The Americans are not done in this match yet. Ben Griffin's ball bounces out of the rough to 18 feet on the par-three 17th and now Bryson hits a corker to six feet.

Justin Rose is off the back left, likely with a wedge in hand and Tommy Fleetwood will be putting from 34 feet.

This match could be back in the balance.

  15. Cantlay misses chance to win holepublished at 22:29 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (15)

Patrick Cantlay did not learn from Rory McIlroy at all.

He misses on the low side, quite badly in fact. An 'amateur' miss from a guy who is all professional.

Down we go to 16 and this match has the makings of something special up the last.

  16. Postpublished at 22:27 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (14)

Rory McIlroy will be first to putt. Not much in it but it gives him the chance to pile on the pressure.

Superb effort but it just fades across the front of the hole.

I'll publish this post and wait for the next one for Patrick Cantlay's putt as he will take so long to hit his that you might all go to bed.

  17. Fleetwood delivers big moment for Europepublished at 22:25 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (16) 2UP

Justin Rose thought that was in. The Englishman's left-to-right putt snakes towards the hole but skirts narrowly left of the cup.

Now it's Ben Griffin's turn to offer a look of despair as his ball rolls down the slope and nips past the hole before turning.

Tommy Fleetwood almost jumps out of his shoes...the Englishman drains his putt from 18 feet right into the heart of the cup. Can Bryson DeChambeau respond for the US?

Nope his putt just pulls up at the last and deviates left. What a huge moment for Europe, who are now two up with two to play.

Rory McIlroy matches Patrick Cantlay. Pin high too.

This is very much McIlroy v Cantlay now.

And I don't know about you, but I am VERY much here for this.

  19. Postpublished at 22:19 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (14)

Shane Lowry pushes his approach long and right.

Patrick Cantlay digs his out the rough to pin high. He looks about as preppy as they come, but he is a seriously gritty competitor.

  20. Postpublished at 22:18 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (15) 1UP

Tommy Fleetwood and Ben Griffin trade blows with their approaches into the 16th.

And now Justin Rose urges his ball to "come on" as it flicks off the fringe and runs 20 feet past the pin.

Bryson DeChambeau, who has been a little all over the place in recent holes, lines up next and zips his ball in almost level with Fleetwood and Griffin.

    This could be anyone's hole.
