Against these top players, you've got to take your chances and that's exactly what Jon Rahm's done here.

Scottie Scheffler's putt from 13 feet away isn't anywhere near the hole - truly incredible to be that far off target for the world number one.

The good news - it's not much of a read for Jon Rahm to follow from 10 feet on a similar line, the bad news - Rahm knows how to putt and he drains it with ease, gives it a first pump and power walks off the green three up!

All the play has been good, we've just not seen a lot of Bryson so hopefully the fireworks start before long.

    1UP Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (10)

Glorious from Tommy Fleetwood who sweeps a seven iron into around 14 feet on the 10th.

With Justin Rose putting from mid-range for birdie could the English duo get Europe back to all square in this match?

Bryson is faced with a 34-foot putt and Ben Griffin's second is wayward and left of the putting surface.

Fleetwood completely misreads his effort and races it past.Justin Rose's effort stays left and low. With Bryson trickling his close, there's a little bit of amazement when he doesn't ask the Europeans to earn their halve.

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 2UP (10)

Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler hitting from almost the same spot from about 100 yards out - this is what we want to see!

Rahm hits a beauty, just short of the hole, spins back and settles about nine feet away.

Scheffler goes beyond the flag and rips it back, as Americans like to do, but although it almost goes in the hole it whistles past and actually settles further away than Rahm's ball.

    3UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (9)

To Andrew's point about a come-out tournament for Cameron Young (20:29 BST), Rome saw the emergence of Max Homa as a real star for Team USA.

And his form has fallen off a cliff in the interim.

So a good performance at the Ryder Cup doesn't guarantee anything.

Scoreboard - two reds and two blues

A bit of daylight is developing in each pairing here - apart from that second match.

Could the DeChambeau/Griffin v Fleetwood/Rose battle prove pivotal?

Cameron Young is the star of this particular team.

Justin Thomas has helped a little bit but I feel like a star is born.

    Is this his come-out tournament?

    3UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (9)

Ludvig Aberg and Cameron Young both in the market for a birdie at the ninth after fine approach shots.

Aberg's putter is running cold, though, and he collapses at the knees after watching his effort fizz past from about five feet. He knows what is coming...

Young makes no mistake with his from a similar distance. "U-S-A" booms around the green as Thomas turns and waves his arms in encouragement to the crowd.

Europe have a lot to do in match three on the back nine.

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 2UP (10)

Jon Rahm had a spot of bother on the 10th but Sepp Straka got him out of trouble with a smooth enough par to grab a half - although he probably shouldn't have as Scottie Scheffler only left nine feet after a great approach.

But Scheffler's just not anywhere near his best today.

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (8)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

You just can’t miss the opportunities at this stage.

It was a shame for Shane because as soon as he hit it, he was out of it and it ran away

Rory’s just run over to the green to make sure his partner doesn’t get too down on himself as he walked off, berating himself for missing it.

  13. Lowry misses chancepublished at 20:19 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (8)

Rory McIlroy is just off the right of the long par-three eighth green. Very hole-able... and he almost did. A touch less pace and that's in.

No matter, here comes Shane Lowry with about 12 feet for the win. Can he send Europe three up?

No. Slides past on the low side and Lowry was not happy with that stroke. Patrick Cantlay tidies up nicely to stay two down.

    1UP Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (9)

So close from Bryson DeChambeau....the American slides his 30-foot putt a smidgen left on the ninth but Justin Rose can't capitalise.

The Englishman's knees buckle slightly as his ball skirts the edge of the cup but doesn't drop.

Rory McIlroy said ahead of the Ryder Cup that he was trying to find a balance with engaging with the hostile American crowd.

He said he engaged too much at Hazeiltine in 2016 and then not enough at Whistling Straits in 2021 when he went into his shell a bit.

He hardly said a word this morning as he cruised to victory with Tommy Fleetwood - but he's now fully engaged this afternoon...

    1UP Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (8)

Tommy Fleetwood looks a little perplexed as he tugs his approach to the ninth into the left bunker gaurding the green.

A huge cheer goes up there from the home fans, who then watch Ben Griffin, who was still a mortgage broker when the US last played this fixture at home, chunk one into the rough.

It's a case of muscling one out of the rough down the left from Bryson DeChambeau but the two-time US Open champion does not disappoint running his ball onto the putting surface.

Still Justin Rose is inside 20 feet and probably in pole position.

Honours even out on the eighth hole.

That was brilliant – one of the hardest holes on the golf course. [McIlroy] showed his absolute strength there flying a long iron all the way back to the flag – fantastic putt.

Patrick Cantlay finds sand but - once had eventually draws the club back after what seemed like an age - splashes out to two feet.

He could have built a sand castle in the time he was in there, but a fine shot nonetheless and it makes Shane Lowry hole his mid-length putt for the win.

Oh wait! Lowry is not needed because Rory McIlroy steps up and DRAINS his putt from downtown. That was right in the front door and McIlroy punches the air with serious intent.
