"On the tee, the 2015 US Open champion Jordan Spieth." A generous round of applause for the 22-year-old double major winner.

That's not a great start though, tugged into the cabbage down the left-side of the 10th fairway.

  3. England's Johnston away with a parpublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

England's Andrew Johnston is among the first out and he is off to a steady start. A missed birdie putt but safely in for par on the 10th to stay four over. Emiliano Grillo of Argentina off to a stinker though. A double bogey on the first and he's +5.

  4. Dustin Johnson out at 22:01published at 20:18 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Looking at how late the leaders are going to be going out, it's unlikely they will complete their rounds this evening. There is daylight in Pennsylvania until 9pm, which is 02:00 BST.

Leader Dustin Johnson is out at 22:01 and four hours is nowhere near long enough for a three-ball to play 18 holes of golf.

  7. Mischief in the locker roompublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

It's not just the greens that are in a mischievous mood at Oakmont this week. There have also been fun and games in the locker room.

Each day this week, someone has been changing the nameplate on the locker of 2012 US Open Champion Webb Simpson.

We have had puns around the Pittsburgh Penguins, UFC, NBA and even Star Wars!

America's Tom Kite currently holds the unwanted record of playing the most majors without winning. Guess which tournament he broke his major duck at? The US Open, way back in 1992.

  9. I'm going to have to control my emotions - Knoxpublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Scotsman, Russell Knox is currently tied 16th with a score of +1 after following a first-round 70 with a 71 today.

He told Sky Sports: “Today was good. I battled as hard as I could. I definitely didn’t have my A game though.

"From the first round, the course has definitely changed significantly and this afternoon is going to be brutal.

"I’m looking forward to this afternoon. I’m going to have to control my emotions and not get down on myself though.”

  10. Round three coming uppublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Round three will be getting under way at 20:00 BST. Those to scrape into the final rounds on +6 will be out first as the players set off in reverse order.

Angel Cabrera of Argentina, the man who won the last US Open held at Oakmont in 2007, will be among the first out. Cabrera's winning score was +5. We're in for some brutal golf if we head that way again.

Tournament organisers are currently out on the greens deciding where to put the pins to effect maximum damage.

  11. Rory rewindpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

It all looked so good for Rory McIlroy. He started on the 10th hole and had four birdies in seven holes to move into contention at three over. But a double bogey on the third, his 12th, knocked the stuffing out of his round.

A further bogey on the par-three sixth dropped him back to six over and perilously close to missing the cut. He knew he needed a par at his last hole to make the cut.

A drive into a fairway bunker didn't help and when he failed to escape with his first attempt, the game was up and the bounce had gone out of the Northern Irishman's stride as he made a disconsolate walk to the scorer's hut.

  14. Westwood out of controlpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Lee Westwood had two early birdies, six bogeys and two late birdies in his two-over 72 today. Given his explanation of his round, it sounds like a real battling effort by the 43-year-old.

He told Sky Sports: "I couldn't find my swing at all. I couldn't control my legs and hip movement so I'll work on that before I start round three.

"You've just got to grind it out if it's not going well. Fortunately it's only bogeys and not double bogeys on the card.

"It was a professional round. The breeze is getting up so it'll take a lot of discipline this afternoon but my putting is good so I'm hopeful."

There are just 10 players under par at the halfway stage. Only one of them has won a major. That man is American Jim Furyk, who claimed the 2003 US Open, and he is one under par, three behind leader Dustin Johnson.

Dustin, if you remember, spectacularly threw away the title last year, three-putting the last hole of the tournament to hand victory to Jordan Spieth.

Englishmen Lee Westwood and Andy Sullivan are one under. Is this Westwood's year? Or will the winner come from further back? Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen and Zach Johnson are all at level par and have won majors.

  18. Lowry par save to stay two underpublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Over on the ninth and Ireland's Shane Lowry has had a scrambling finish. In a fairway bunker off the tee, a hack out, wedge to the green and 15-foot downhill par putt. The big man is at two under and will be out in the penultimate group when round three gets going in a short while.

  19. Spieth eight off the leadpublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Zach's playing partner Jordan Spieth has checked all the angles of his 30-footer for birdie. It's another snaker and that's coming to rest a couple of feet away. Bang in the middle and the defending champion posts a second round of 72, At four over, he's eight off the lead.

Bryson DeChambeau from much closer in to get back to level par but he pushes it and he stays at one over.

  20. Zach Johnson's solid startpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Evening all. I join the action as Zach Johnson curls a lengthy birdie putt down the 18th green to tap-in distance. Solid work by the American who is level par after his opening two rounds. The reigning Open champion in fine shape at halfway
