    Walker/Z Johnson v Rose/Wood 2UP (15)

Zach Johnson putting from the collar at 15 and he cosies that up nicely from there. Rose for the win up the hill... starts left and stays left, no change. Back at 14, Cabrera-Bello comes up well short with his pitch, as Spieth prepare to play his bunker shot... looks good, but finishes quite a few feet past...

  2. 'Competitive but respectful'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    McIlroy/Pieters beat Mickelson/Fowler 4&2

More from Rory McIlroy, talking to BBC Radio 5 live: "You want to set the tone for the rest of the team and when they saw us up early that's exactly what we were trying to do - put blue on the board. We delivered for Darren.

"With the way we combined yesterday and the chemistry - last night my phone was buzzing and it was Clarkey to see if that was what we both wanted - who wouldn't want to play with him. He's a talented guy with a great future.

"It's a great atmosphere and it seems like we're playing it in the right spirit. It's competitive but still respectful."

    2UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (15)

I think we can bring out the fat lady. Matt Fitzpatrick has just found water. He's so far off target that his ball may well be in the Atlantic Ocean rather than the lake beside the 16th green. Critical.

Yesterday we saw rookie Andy Sullivan in the drink late when it mattered. Some 24 hours later, another newbie follows suit.

  4. 'Huge to lead the team out'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    McIlroy/Pieters beat Mickelson/Fowler 4&2

Rory McIlroy talking to Sky Sports: "Personally and for the team that was my fourth time up against Phil and thankfully I was able to get one back.

"It's huge to lead team and get that first point on the board. Darren put a lot of faith in us. We hadn't practiced, we flipped for it on the first tee, but it turned out pretty well.

Thomas Pieters added: "I'm enjoying it 100%. It's great playing with Rory, we hit it long and we make it exciting."

  6. 'Still possible for Europe'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (13)

    David Leadbetter
Leading golf coach on BBC Radio 5 live

There is still a chance, but we hope that short putt Sergio missed doesn't come back to haunt them. It is possible, but they are going to have to make a lot of birdies coming home.

  7. Postpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (13)

Garcia to win the hole at 13 and he does so, cutting the American lead to three holes with five to play. Doable, but unlikely.

  9. Postpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Walker/Z Johnson v Rose/Wood 2UP (14)

Spieth scrambling at 13 and he flies his recovery over the back. Cabrera-Bello rolls his birdie putt about four feet past, leaving Garcia exactly the kind of knee-knocker he loves... Walker for birdie on 14 and he's poured it in from long range. Fair old racket out on course now, the lid really rattling, and that's a hole back as Wood's birdie putt lips out.

    McIlroy/Pieters beat Mickelson/Fowler 4&2

We arrive at 5-4 and this one has always looked on the cards. Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler have struggled. Should the US fail at Hazeltine National, surely one question will be why Dustin Johnson isn't out there this morning.

Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters just too consistent all day. Think back to the US eruption when Fowler birdied the first. It feels an age ago. The Pieters finger to lip moment seconds later set the tone.

    2UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (15)

It's reached the point where you have to have huge admiration for Brooks Koepka and Brand Snedeker. Not a bogey all day and when they have been in trouble they have scrapped possibly better than anyone at this event so far to stick in there.

Snedeker was in the trees moments ago but from 15-20ft Koepka holes out and the noise comes from all angles. Again they snatch a hole from nowhere as Matthew Fitzpatrick can't make his putt. On their way to the next, Snedeker clenches his fist for a good 20 metres. Massive uphill slog for Europe in this one now.

  14. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    4UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (12)

Reed shanks his tee shot at 13, no idea what happened there but it's come up short of the lake. Garcia safely on, Europe should nick a hole back.

  15. Europe chargingpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

Thomas Pieters has probably ended match one with an arrow iron into the 16th green. The US are not as well placed and have to win the hole. Back on 15 Henrik Stenson summons the strength of Sweden to fizz a low one into the green from way back. With a kind run, it's close enough to leave a big chance to level things.

  16. On the beers, the $10 beers...published at 17:08 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    United States 5-3 Europe

    Tom Fordyce
    Chief sports writer in Minnesota

Horribly tense out on the course now, the balance swinging one way then the other, spectators stampeding from hole to hole as they try to keep up with the seesawing contests. Beers are $10 a can here, but that punchy price-tag is putting off very few. It's loud, and it's getting louder.

  17. Postpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    4UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (12)

Spieth piles pressure on Europe with a fine putt at 12 but Cabrera-Bello matches it to stay four holes down heading down towards the final stretch.

  18. Postpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    1UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (14)

Joyous stuff on 15 but Europe are robbed on 14 as Brandt Snedeker continues to be a thorn in the side. Matt Fitzpatrick's bullseye of a fairway iron looked to have secured the hole but the blonde hair of Snedeker decorates a contorted face as he screams into the air after draining a 15 footer for the halve. What a gritty individual.

    Walker/Z Johnson v Rose/Wood 3UP (13)

Crackerjack tee shot by Rose at the par-three 13th and Zach Johnson's isn't too bad, either. Wood for the win... stays just right of the hole. But Zach Johnson, he of the magic wand, twitches and tugs his putt left, meaning Europe go three up with five to play.

  20. Europe up - Dormiepublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (15)

Thomas Pieters draws the type of roar we thought only Americans can muster this week. His downhill putt on 15 has break in it and it's treacherous but he sends subtly and it drops. Feel the noise all around, it's a collective scream of "come on".

That's three up with three to play. Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler soundly under the pump.
