That's a distance where it can be difficult to get it right and Mickelson judged it perfectly. McIlroy had a different angle but you always get a little bit of help from seeing another player putt first.

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 1UP (13)

Phil Mickelson from the fringe, this must be 40ft or so, some break to negotiate too. He sends it, the break comes, it's looking good, it's looking good, just short. That would have been another stunner. Rory McIlroy follows, not as close but a concession. Two pars. That's another hole chalked off.

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (9)

Spieth on the 10th tee. Playing 450 yards and that's a pretty good drive to set up partner reed. Cabrera-Bello takes aim and pings one straight down the middle...

Onto the par-three 13th, both Thomas Pieters and Rickie Fowler go deep on the green, a long way left to putt.

Over on 12, Henrik Stenson is wayward off the tee. Brand Snedeker finds the first cut. "The wind never moved it," he says. Both of these matches are tight. Big moments to come.

  5. 'This is going to the wire'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    United States 5-3 Europe

Three-time USA Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "This is going to come down to the wire. There is a lot of great golf at the moment, which is great for the spectators.

"USA still have the lead but all the matches are very close. You have to stay focused. Jordan and Patrick are doing a great job of not getting too high or too low, just getting into the next shot."

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 1UP (12)

As it gets better for Europe on the 11th, the Rory McIlroy/Thomas Pieters lead deteriorates on 12. The Belgian cannot make a putt from eight feet or so but Rickie Fowler does and the lead is again sliced to one. A par three next.

  9. Europe up - Back to levelpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    A/S Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (11)

Matt Fitzpatrick has won the Silver Medal - the prize given to the top amateur at the Open Championship - so he must have plenty going for him in the years to come. Some previous winners include Jose Maria Olazabal, Rory McIlroy and a certain Tiger Woods.

The young man shows just what he has in the locker with a beautiful chip on 11 to set up a tap-in birdie. That's good enough for the hole as Brandt Snedeker misses a rare putt. He didn't even catch the lip from four feet.

    Walker/Z Johnson v Rose/Wood 1UP (9)

Walker on tee at 10 and he clobbers one down there, leaving his partner a nice wedge in. Rose stiffs his approach to within six feet, pressure on Zach Johnson... that's nice, but it's advantage Europe.

Spieth on the ninth, floating one in, and his ball finishes about 10 feet from the hole. Cabrera-Bello out of a bunker, pretty good.

  13. That's ugly!published at 16:16 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 2UP (11)

Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson on the 12th fairway, it's getting to the point where something needs to happen for them. This is a great foursome, properly intriguing. Fowler ensures they travel the 522 yards to the green in two blows. Thomas Pieters can't do the same for Europe, sand.

  14. 'Hang in there'published at 16:16 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (8)

    David Leadbetter
Leading golf coach on BBC Radio 5 live

It is not that they are not playing good golf, they are playing great golf, it is just the Americans are playing unbelievably well. They are putting well. Europe just have to hang in there really.

    1UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (10)

Can Rory Mclroy maybe swing by the 10th green to use Henrik Stenson's putter? The Swede is tentative as he misses a putt to level the match. Tight contest this one.

  18. 'Huge from Rory'published at 16:08 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 2UP (11)

    Carin Koch
Last year's European Solheim Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

This is a very important time in the match and Rory knew he had to make it so not let the Americans into this match any more.

That was just huge, and to do it first put the pressure on the American team. It makes a big difference to be two up and you can see in their steps they are back again. I don't think they will let the Americans in again.

  19. Postpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (8)

Garcia with that longun at eight and he leaves his partner with a few feet for par. Reed up the hill at eight to go four up but he doesn't hit it, before Cabrera-Bello knocks in for a half.

  20. Europe up - Rory again!published at 16:07 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 2UP (11)

Thomas Pieters wags his finger and then clenches both fists as Rory McIlroy downs a critical putt. It's a 15ft effort and the weight, once again, is prime. In the front of the cup, perfect.

Phil Mickelson can deny a two-hole lead from 12ft. The putter has been smoking for Lefty today, sizzle, sizzle, no. The break doesn't come off the left as he expects and that's a massive McIlroy moment. The kid can play.
