  1. 'Monster Mickelson'published at 15:30 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (8)

    Tom Fordyce
    Chief sports writer in Minnesota

That monster putt from Mickelson on the 8th was greeted with the loudest roar of this Ryder Cup so far. Along with the 16th this hole it may be the most perfect natural amphitheatre on the course - great sloping banks on either side of the green, each with spectators 30-deep, a long line of hospitality marquees with white picket fences running along the front of their wide balconies, the maple trees at the back turning orange and red in the warm autumn sunshine.

  3. Europe uppublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    1UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (7)

Matthew Fitzpatrick has a putt of 15-20ft for the birdie on seven. A fist clench tells you what you need to know and Brooks Koepka misses from closer in, that's Europe's hole.

Young Fitzy doing himself proud. A Silver Medal winner at The Open don't forget.

Michael Hicks: Even with the ridiculous pool of talent around in golf at the moment, when McIlroy's on it, there's nobody better to watch!

Rob Elmore: American fans cheering when a European player hits a bad shot - great sportsmanship guys!

  5. 'Golf at its best'published at 15:28 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (8)

    Carin Koch
Last year's European Solheim Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

That is matchplay and golf at its best, Mickelson made up for his bad tee shot there.

  6. Postpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    A/S Walker/Z Johnson v Rose/Wood (6)

Cabrera-Bello tees off at the fifth, as over at the sixth Wood misses a very makeable par putt to win the hole and edge ahead. Hole halved in six.

  7. What a shot!published at 15:27 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (8)

Dear oh dear, how are Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson even out there? Dustin Johnson - a major winner and and world number two - is sat on the sidelines.

Mickelson's tee shot on the par three eighth is wide and Fowler's chip on a downslope is all wrong. It's so wrong it's frightening and runs 40ft past. Mickelson takes over, the only thing more consistent than his errors is the rate at which he digs himself out of trouble. And again. What a putt. What a monster putt. Think Loch Ness and Beast of Bodmin rolled together.

Now Rory McIlroy must hole from five feet to halve. He does. Not quite as spectacular but boy oh boy, that looked like being 4UP.

  8. 'Like a Rocky film'published at 15:25 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (5)

    David Leadbetter
Leading golf coach on BBC Radio 5 live

This is tit for tat here, like a Rocky film, blow for blow. Europe are playing great and they are still two down.

  9. What a shot!published at 15:23 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (5)

Reed has chipped in at the fifth! That's four birdies at the first five holes and Garcia has a longish putt to halve the hole. Brilliant from Garcia, some conkers from the Spaniard to make that one and stay in touch.

  10. Postpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (6)

Matthew Fitzpatrick creams a drive on the seventh. No danger of water and Henrik Stenson takes the reins, Superman yesterday this bloke. He lands on the green, leaving a huge pitchmark. Solid stuff but these two need to start making putts.

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (4)

Here's Spieth from behind a tree and he makes light of it, jabbing it through the fifth green. Cabrera-Bello's drop has finally been taken and he's not far off hitting the pin.

  12. Postpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Spieth/Reed v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (5)

You know how I said Sergio Garcia tugged his drive on the fifth? It ended up in a spectator's pocket. I kid you not. How did it end up there (did the patron pick it up?) Either way, after much merriment, Europe have a free drop.

  13. 'Rory taking the reins'published at 15:19 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    United States 5-3 Europe

Hunter Mahan talking to BBC Radio 5 live: "Rory has really taken the reins of team Europe, everything is feeding through him. I think we are seeing the new guard for Europe, the rookies, playing some great golf. This is going to go down to the last match I feel.

"Jordan and Patrick really feed off one another. Jordan didn’t play good, his ball striking wasn’t up to his standard. He will be the emotional bloodline for the team and they will go how he goes, he is really focused for today."

  17. Postpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Spieth/Reed v Garcia/Cabrera-Bello (4)

The par-four fifth is much shorter today - the tee box has been moved so that the green is reachable with a driver. Every European team has attacked so far. Garcia tugs his tee shot left, into the crowd, but a decent lie would mean trouble is kept to a minimum.

  18. Postpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick (6)

Brooks Koepka, 26 years of age and a big hitter. Did you know he started his career on the European Challenge Tour, graduated to the European Tour and then left us for the PGA Tour.

He misses a putt to win the sixth hole. That's what you get for leaving Brooks. Tough luck old chum.

  19. 'Feels like a win'published at 15:10 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (7)

    Carin Koch
Last year's European Solheim Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

They have been making putts all day. If you are down in the water hazard and having to make a par and get the chance and then do it, you feel like you have won the hole.

These Europeans march to the eighth tee. They are three up and in charge. Rory McIlroy is pumped.
