Matt Fitzpatrick has the shiny skin of a teenager, blemish free, you'd expect the 22-year-old to be asked for identification if he went to buy a lottery ticket.

The youngest player at the Ryder Cup has pocketed close to £3m in prize money in his short career but he's still humble when around his heroes turned team-mates.

"These are the guys that I've looked up to since I was young pretty much, to sort of looking for autographs when I've been to tournaments as a fan," says the world number 44. "I know Sergio this year signed a golf ball for me when I played with him in Qatar. He was giving one out to a little kid and I was like 'I'll have one of those if you've got one to spare'."

    Snedeker/Koepka v Stenson/Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick is a long way from Sheffield. He likes collecting autographs you know - more on that next. His Ryder Cup debut calls on him to tee it up on one alongside Henrik Stenson.

It's a clean strike, into the first cut but he'll take that. The green up ahead is still on fire. The emotion Phil Mickelson showed there moments ago was terrific for such an early hour in the US.

Brooks Koepka on the tee, lampoons one a little wide. He's found the stands but should get a free drop.

If you're in Dover, wider Kent, Copenhagen or Shanghai, duck. Phil Mickelson is on the second tee.

    A/S Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters (1)

There's a sure fire way to ignite day two, all it needs is for someone to sink a monster on this first green. Rickie Fowler is wielding a big stick with a flame on it and the cup is smeared in petrol. The flames are up. What a putt from the American, some 25ft and it's dead weight in. The US noise washes over this green, we are officially on fire already.

Oh dear Europe. Thomas Pieters needs a 20 footer for a half and... oh my word... it's in. What a start. He puts his finger to his lips to shush the masses. Brilliant sport, brilliant personalities and brilliant putting. Level. Birdies galore.

Fowler applauds, Mickelson smiles.Rory plays the crowd on his way to tee two. They don't need any more hype.

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters

These early exchanges feel significant, the momentum belongs to Europe. Phil Mickelson waggles in the sand, he should be able to whip this towards the green. Nice shot, safely on the surface. A big Thomas Pieters drive has left Rory McIlroy with 125 yards or so from the middle of the fairway. "Sit, sit," says Rory. A little heavy and a lengthy putt left.

Ian Poulter and Darren Clarke are down at the tee in conversation. Ear pieces in, it all looks very serious.

  7. 'I have confidence to play rookies in foursomes'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

Europe captain Darren Clarke explains the reasons behind his foursomes pairings on Sky Sports: "Yesterday the foursomes pairings didn't quite fire so there were options. Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose are strong together so the idea is to split them up and get them out with the rookies which they are comfortable with.

"Wood and Fitzpatrick are playing well in practice and I wanted to get all the guys out there and give them the experience. Would it have been easier to put them in the fourballs? Maybe. But I had enough confidence in them to put them out in the foursomes."

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Pieters

Each man is introduced. A thumbs up from Rickie Fowler, a clenched fist from Phil Mickelson. It will be Thomas Pieters to tee it up. Wallop down the middle.

Fowler loosens his swing, we are spared a Mickelson howtizer early on. White trousers on the Americans remember, tricky look. It's a pull from Fowler and he's found sand.

    United States 5-3 Europe

Two men of differing stature but with one united goal. Thomas Pieters, just 24, has three European Tour wins so he can handle a certain amount of pressure.

As the crowd sing "ARNOLD PALMER," the two Europeans smile. Phil Mickelson has a glint in his eye, Rickie Fowler is loving the giggles with Rory McIlroy. Come on gents, get serious. We want war.

Captain Sarcasm: I only see one win for Europe & that's in game 1. Game 2 close, possible half. Games 3 & 4 to USA.

That would make it 7.5 - 4.5. Would that be curtains? What do the rest of you think? Tweet me on #bbcrydercup.

Rory McIlroy speaks to Sky Sports on the mood in Europe's locker room: "It was much better than it was at noon yesterday afternoon. We did what we wanted to do. We went out there and won the session, we are right back in it. I thought it was a really good result for us. We just have to keep this momentum we have.

On playing partner Thomas Pieters: "He's awesome. When Darren told me I'd be with him in the afternoon I was excited, I know his talent and game. I get to have another go at Phil and Rickie now to see if I can do to them what they did to me yesterday morning."

McIlroy has never beaten Mickelson in three Ryder Cup matches: "He's the one who calls the shots in their team room. If I can get a win over him it would be extra satisfying."

What a thing of beauty. Just 25 minutes to the big tee off. It's all change in the fashion stakes today though as the US are all in white trousers. I'm not sure about that choice. It takes a brave man to pull off white slacks.

Looking at that line up I'm predicting wins for McIlroy/Pieters, Stenson/Fitzpatrick, Walker/ Z Johnson and a halved match between Reed/Spieth and Garcia/Cabrera-Bello. That would put the US 6.5 - 5.5 ahead. There you go, what do you think? Let me know on #bbcrydercup.

  20. How they line up...published at 13:03 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

There are a few strange picks for the foursomes.

Phil Mickelson plays, he was utterly abysmal off the tee yesterday and if that hasn't changed, Rickie Fowler may as well set up camp in the woods this morning.

Darren Clarke opts to split Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose. The latter wasn't flying on day one, he will need to be to support rookie Chris Wood. Matt Fitzpatrick gets a Ryder Cup debut too. He should suit foursomes golf as he's a proper steady Eddie and Henrik Stenson shouldn't have to baby sit the 22-year-old too much.
