    A/S Moore/Holmes v Willett/Westwood (16)

Ryan Moore is close, so close, to birdie on 17. Snakes left, right, but will not come back left again. That's a par. Lee Westwood has a knee rattler from five feet for par, Danny Willett has twice that distance. Potential disaster lurks.

Willett pushes it wide. Oh no, this is the type of putt Westy wobbles with regularity...

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (14)

Reed piles on the pressure in the bottom match, sticking his approach close at 15. Rose has got a slinky downhill putt for birdie, nice speed but misses to the right... here's Spieth, who doesn't hit it at all, he looks frazzled after two long matches in the sun.

    2UP Mickelson/Kuchar v Kaymer/Garcia (16)

Kaymer cosies his eagle putt up to the hole, but Kuchar has a putt to win the match. Mind you, he's still got 15 feet... misses, Europe still alive in the penultimate contest, Garcia was already down in four to win the hole.

That's idyllic. We hope this isn't a close up of a canvas on your kitchen wall. If you are there, we are not at all jealous. Honest.

It's safe to say, the venues from which you are taking in this drama are varied to say the least.

    3UP Mickelson/Kuchar v Kaymer/Garcia (15)

Mickelson's approach at 16 skips through the green and ends up in a bunker. Kuchar is safely on, though. Kaymer, however, hit that green in two.

  7. Splash!published at 23:35 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    A/S Moore/Holmes v Willett/Westwood (16)

I sympathise with the Americans. Just when you're under immense pressure you don't want a water carry and white trousers.

JB Holmes succumbs to it, splash. Ryan Moore is on the green, mid-range for birdie. Lee Westwood has something similar left and Danny Willett lets the blood pump a bit too much to end up dry but out the back. I'd love to know their heart rates right now.

    Hole: 17

    Yards: 176

    Par: 3

It may measure just 176 yards but this hole is one where you take par, breathe in and walk away grateful. One word... water. If nerves are rattling away at you on the penultimate hole, this is not where you want to push one right.

Ryder Cup 2016: Best shots from day two

It's been a cracking second day at the Ryder Cup, and here are some of Saturday's best shots.

  11. 'This is what it is all about'published at 23:31 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    A/S Moore/Holmes v Willett/Westwood (16)

    Fred Funk
Former US Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

This is what it is all about, this is the pressure of the Ryder Cup. This is a nervous situation.

That was a case of standing up to the situation, everyone is leaning on you and it's a great shot from Holmes. This whole situation on this hole is defining what the Ryder Cup is about.

  12. Cannot split them...published at 23:30 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

Under this pressure, the golf on show is supreme. These guys are masters of their art. Touch, power, it's all on show. The 16th is surrounded by spectators shielding their eyes from the sun and the brilliance blinding them on the green. It comes down to Danny Willett for eagle, JB Holmes is already in for birdie. A big swing on this Willett putt and it will stop short. Either he or Westwood must now convert twitchy little putts for birdie, Willett steps up to down it.

    All square. Two holes left.

  13. Postpublished at 23:30 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (14)

Spieth somehow leaves his bunker escape short of the hole, which is verging on impossible. Rose to putt first, for birdie. This one will twist and turn like a twisty-turny thing... nice try but just misses. Reed to win the hole... squeezes it in, USA go two up. Reed has been a marvel today, he's won all five of his team's points, rather carrying Jordan Spieth.

    A/S Moore/Holmes v Willett/Westwood (15)

Lee Westwood from the sand on 16, his third blow, a par five. With a puff of white sand he caresses the ball close, six feet left. This match is the one now. America will surely close out at least another but none are this tight. It takes one putt, just one putt to make a huge difference.

  15. Postpublished at 23:22 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    1UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (14)

Spieth into the sand front left at 14 before Rose sticks his approach safely on. Stenson, now, with a sand iron and that's nice. Reed is the best of the lot, however, and will have a eminently makeable putt for birdie.

  16. 'Gutsy stuff'published at 23:18 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Mickelson/Kuchar v Kaymer/Garcia (15)

    David Leadbetter
Leading golf coach on BBC Radio 5 live

The Americans have outputted them on this back nine here. This is it, where it all counts. Thinking about tomorrow too, that will give Martin lots of confidence. It was gutsy stuff.

  17. Postpublished at 23:18 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Mickelson/Kuchar v Kaymer/Garcia (15)

Mickelson from six feet at 15 and in it goes. Garcia has a six-footer from the apron, with an awkward lie, and just misses. Kaymer with a big, swinging right-to-lefter and he makes it. USA three up with three to go...

  18. Cool hand Thomaspublished at 23:17 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    Tom Fordyce

McIlroy has been majestic these past two days. But so too has Pieters, a rookie with the cool hand of a veteran, a man for both this week and many Ryder Cups to come.

  19. What about Thomas?published at 23:16 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    McIlroy/Pieters beat Koepka/D Johnson 3&1

It's easy to compliment Rory McIlroy, he was terrific. But Thomas Pieters won five holes, Rory just two. Europe has a new hero.

  20. 'Thomas showed his class'published at 23:14 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    McIlroy/Pieters beat Koepka/D Johnson 3&1

Rory McIlroy reacts on Sky Sports: "It was incredible. Just like yesterday we dovetailed really well all day. We both got off to a good start and got it going around the turn. I disappeared in the last few holes and Thomas took over. He showed his class at the end."

Thomas Pieters adds: "I'm very happy. I'm making a lot of putts which is obviously what will win you points. It's really cool to have three points with Rory."

Three matches, the pair are yet to even fall behind.
