If you're thinking Thomas Pieters is unstoppable, last month he withdrew from a tournament because of a bee sting.

He's a fan of basketball and crossfit too if you're interested. Hopefully there are no bees swarming Hazeltine and all will be well.

    D Johnson/Koepka v McIlroy/Pieters 4UP (14)

The Brooks Koepka putter doesn't warm up. In truth his effort from 10ft is tame. Yes it breaks so it was never easy but this did not threaten one bit. Both Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters can make it four up with four to play. The Belgian does the business. He has been a revelation. A rookie remember.

    2UP Mickelson/Kuchar v Kaymer/Garcia (11)

Garcia at 11, to win the hole, looks in all the way but doesn't fancy it at the end. Mickelson puffs out his cheeks, the Americans remain two up.

    D Johnson/Koepka v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (14)

Dustin Johnson under cooks his ball on 14, the sand short of the green gets him. Thomas Pieters cooks his to perfection, Mary Berry would approve. Just a six or seven footer left. Brooks Koepka with a wedge from the fairway and it's good, gives him a good look but his putter is icy at the moment.

Rory McIlroy only managed 384 yards off the tee. He flicks his chip in close too.

  5. 'You want to make your birdies'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (10)

    Andrew Magee
American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

That was the Patrick Reed effect. They really thought he was going to make it and left themselves with a bit to do.

You just want to make birdie after birdie after birdie. You're not really reading your putts, you just want to make them.

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (10)

Kaymer with his third into the 11th... ricochets off playing partner Garcia's ball, which will have to be replaced. Back to Spieth on the 10th and he just misses with his birdie attempt. Rose's ball comes out a bit juicy from the rough and finishes a fair few feet past, Stenson's putt is a bit heavy-handed. Here's Reed to win the hole... misread, he was walking as soon as he hit it. Rose misses his par putt, didn't break, but Stenson saves their bacon. For now.

We have waxed lyrical about Rory McIlroy but Thomas Pieters has gone under the radar. From what we can see, he's won three of the five holes this pair have won. He's also scored better than McIlroy on eight of 13 holes.

Hats off to him. Rory shouts louder though.

  10. 'Pieters looking very strong'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 1 October 2016

    D Johnson/Koepka v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (13)

    Carin Koch
Last year's European Solheim Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Thomas Pieters has been very strong. You see this in matchplay, too. I played my best golf in the Solheim Cup in these matches.

It can take you to that next level, you don’t have to worry about the score at the end, it is about one hole at a time.

    3UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (9)

Rose with his second at 10, downhill, finds the apron. Stenson, however, is safely onto the dancefloor. Spieth tugs his approach but is still safely on before Reed draws his second to within eight feet.

    D Johnson/Koepka v McIlroy/Pieters 3UP (13)

Thomas Pieters halts the Dustin Johnson run on the par-3 13th, hitting the dancefloor with a dead straight iron and rolling in a putt. Rory McIlroy high-fives him so hard he risks fracturing something. Brooks Koepka was also excellent off the tee but the putter isn't at all hot for the 26-year-old. He gets the read wrong. A huge hole, three up, five to play.

Just when you thought you had seen it all, we've now had Mickelson curtsying after that putt on 10. I can't be sure, but I'd wager that was a reference to McIlroy's bowing last night. It's seriously spicy out there.

    Moore/Holmes v Willett/Westwood 1UP (11)

    Fred Funk

That was a good positive reaction back from Willett. It was like 'take that guys. Whatever you dish out, I'm taking it'.

    Moore/Holmes v Willett/Westwood 1UP (11)

There's suddenly a sense of America gathering pace as JB Holmes rolls in birdie on 11. Darren Clarke stands beside the green, scratching his chin like some sort of Bond villain. Both Danny Willett and Lee Westwood can match the mark of Holmes and Willett does so instantly. The lead is preserved. Off strides Clarke. He's more Jaws than Oddjob.

    D Johnson/Koepka v McIlroy/Pieters 2UP (12)

Some of your interactions on Twitter are stellar tonight. It seems this event just grabs people and keeps them hooked.

Dustin Johnson is trying to spoil the European charge and crashes his approach much closer than anyone on 12. Rory McIlroy is off the back and his chip runs past. Thomas Pieters has a few feet for par also. Really this comes down to DJ. He did the business at the last and does it again. A rare show of emotion from a man who probably wouldn't even blink on a rollercoaster.

Dr Malcolm Harvey: Can DLIII & DC just agree to match up Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed tomorrow? What a belter of a singles matchup that would be.

Paul OSullivan: 1991 Ryder cup much nastier than this: pre Internet.

Nick Hughes: If they had hecklers at Augusta, Rory would have the career slam by now. Angry Rory is an unplayable Rory.
