    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +3, T Woods +8 (15)

Dustin Johnson is faltering. He doesn't look impressed as his bunker shot flops up towards some more sand further along the fairway.

Tiger Woods is weighing up whether he can reach the green from 287 yards. Deep concentration. It carries, but drifts into the bunker.

  2. Birdie for Stensonpublished at 23:31 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    H Stenson +1 (15)

Two birdies in three holes for Sweden's Henrik Stenson.

The latest, a putt of just over 30 feet at the par four sixth having started on the back nine.

    J Dufner E (14)

Oh Jason. What are you doing with your putter?

Dufner plays a deft chip on to the green inside four feet for an absolute nailed on par...but his putting woes continue and he dribbles it right. That was as timid a putt as I've seen played in a while.

The American back to level par for the tournament, confidence on the greens no doubt shattered.

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +3, T Woods +8 (15)

A series of mega-drives from the marquee group, but while Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods find the fairway, Dustin Johnson creams his 311 yards into a bunker.

  5. Postpublished at 23:17 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +3, T Woods +8 (15)

Straightforward par for Justin Thomas to remain at three over. Four shots ahead, Dustin Johnson tidies up for a par of his own that keeps him at one under and tied for the lead.

Tiger Woods scrambles back for a solid four, too, after hitting the rough with his tee shot.

Finally a close up shot of Justin Thomas' trousers. And I reckon they look like crickets on them? Although I'm no David Attenborough...

Dustin Johnson has 16-foot putt for birdie, that'd give him the outright lead again. He slides it left. Thomas went a similar distance right.

  7. Bogey for Henleypublished at 23:12 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Henley -1 (F)

Russell Henley can't tuck his par putt away.

The American has had plenty of birdie chances to increase his advantage, but he failed to take them and then bogeys the last.

That makes it a five-way tie for the lead again.

  8. Tiger in trouble... againpublished at 23:10 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +3, T Woods +8 (14)

Tiger's in trouble again. A real awkward looking-lie on the 15th, having to chop it out of the first cut. It flies just over a greenside bunker.

Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson couple up next to each other on the green, around 15 feet from the pin.

  9. Postpublished at 23:08 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Henley -2 (17)

Leader Russell Henley is in the sand at 18. The American digs is out to make the green, but work to do for a par that will send him into the clubhouse with in top spot.

  12. Double bogey for Woods, bogey for DJpublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +3, T Woods +8 (14)

Ten feet to make bogey for Tiger Woods. He four-putted to drop two shots at the 12th... and he'll two-putt for a double bogey at the 14th.

Successive doubles for the 14-time major winner. I wonder how many times that has happened in his career.

Justin Thomas crouches, places his ball, takes a few steps back and then trots back over to it to slide in for a well-taken par.

Dustin Johnson, the joint-leader, adjusts his trousers and steadies himself for a par putt from inside 10 feet. And it's wide!

DJ drops out of the lead.

  13. Another birdie chance goes beggingpublished at 22:59 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    J Dufner -1 (13)

If Jason Dufner could putt he would be leading by six tonight. The American has another birdie look on the 13th but again fails to drain the putt. He had three birdies on the front nine but his flat stick has gone cold on the back nine.

He'll still be pretty happy to be one under, but it could, and probably should, be so so much better.

  14. Birdie for Stensonpublished at 22:59 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    H Stenson +2 (13)

Steady away from Sweden's Henrik Stenson. A fourth birdie of the day despite finding sand off the tee at the par four fourth having started on the back nine.

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +3, T Woods +6 (13)

Tiger in the fescue. Slashing around in the long grass, but finding a way out - he'll have to untangle the weed wrapped around his club head, though. He makes the green in four.

Dustin Johnson clips out of a bunker and on to the green. Justin Thomas then pitches low towards the pin.

  16. Postpublished at 22:50 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +3, T Woods +6 (13)

Tiger had fans ducking at one side of the fairway with his tee shot, his pulls his approach out of the rough right across to the spectators lining the other flank and a man dives to the ground with his head in his hands to avoid it.

DJ can't do too much better with his, clipping into the sand from an unfortunate lie after what looked like a solid tee shot.

  18. Which major's toughest?published at 22:47 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

BBC Sport commentator at Shinnecock Hills

The Masters is the most random. The average price at the bookies of the winners was 28/1 which obviously proves it's not the easiest to win

  19. Shinnecock 'puts players under scrutiny'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

It's great to see these players put under scrutiny. This is a completely different test. They've got the set up pretty good. Some players win tournaments with 20 under and loads of birdies. You've got to hang in there for four straight days which is making this very exciting.

  20. Postpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +3, T Woods +6 (13)

Dustin Johnson whips his drive like a Roberto Carlos free-kick down the 14th fairway.

Tiger Woods' is more reminiscent of one of my free-kicks, heading right, way off target, and causing the spectators to duck.

That's nestled into a bank, with more than 200 yards to play.
