  1. 'Rose can feel pleased'published at 21:56 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport commentator at Shinnecock Hills

On Justin Rose: This is made for him. Round in a one-over-par 71. He has every reason to feel pleased with his performance. There's no one better of finding that feeling of serenity. He seems to be able to cruise round the most difficult of golf courses.

    "No, Tiger."

Woods isn't impressed with his tee shot at the par-three 11th. It drifts right and is gobbled up by a mean-looking bunker.

  3. Bogey for Fleetwoodpublished at 21:54 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    T Fleetwood +4 (12)

Bad for worst for Tommy Fleetwood. Back-to-back bogeys after a three putt at the par four 12th.

  4. Double bogey for Thomaspublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +3, T Woods +3 (10)

Tiger taking time over his effort. He pulls away as the ball seems to turn over a revolution in front of him. Woods makes the officials aware, a little bit of confusion and chatter, and then he calmly rolls in for a well-taken par.

Justin Thomas to salvage double bogey. He makes it. But drops to three over.

Dustin Johnson pops in from close range for par.

  5. Bogey for Fleetwoodpublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    T Fleetwood +3 (11)

Third dropped shot of the day for European number one Tommy Fleetwood after a two putt at the par three 11th.

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (9)

Justin Thomas faced with a travelator-esque slope in front of him, watches his ball run up the bank and then trickle back down almost to his toes.

He takes a deep breath, and gets the next one right. But he'll be dropping shots here...

Dustin Johnson has the simpler task of a mid-range birdie putt. It comes up short.

    R Lumsden +3 (8)

Scottish amateur Ryan Lumsden has three bogeys over the first eight holes of his round.

Lumsden finished tied for 10th at six under alongside 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott at US Open qualifying in Columbus.

  8. 'Poulter should be delighted'published at 21:42 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

On Ian Poulter: It's fantastic. He played really really solid. He hit 12 greens. He should be delighted. He's embracing the stress of the US Open because he's a gritty player. It's clearly worked as shown by his first day.

Ah, Tiger! Making it look simple, get that wrong and the American would have been dropping more shots out at Shinnecock. Instead, he cosies up to the flag from the bottom of the slope.

It's threatening to all go wrong for Justin Thomas though. He kicks an approach right over the green and off the other side.

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (9)

Not too bad a lie for Tiger Woods, but the 14-time major champion isn't happy with that. A few choice words with himself as he fails to make it up on to the green. A huge slope to tackle in front of him.

Justin Thomas can't find the good stuff either, another tricky task to come, but DJ strolls up and nonchalantly slaps his approach eight feet or so from the pin.

It's been great to watch - we've had a bit of everything. We've had a few birdies but we've also had some disasters. It's been really entertaining. I do want to be out there. The US Open always appeals to me. It's so brutal. You only want to be out there if you're playing well though and not scoring massively like some of the big names are today.

"Ohhh yeaahh," shouts a New Yorker as Tiger Woods takes an iron to his tee shot at the par-four 10th, but it creeps right - and finds the long grass.

Justin Thomas goes left and catches the slope, running on up the fairway.

Dustin Johnson is already up there. 80 yards from the flag.

  16. Marquee group hit the turnpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (9)

Justin Thomas beats the breeze to slide in for par.

Dustin Johnson prowls around the green sizing his lie up. Four feet for par, wide stance. Down it goes as the world number one hits the turn at two under.

Tiger Woods sweeps up to stay at three over. Just five off the lead.

  17. Postpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

DJ's birdie putt waves at the pin as it rolls narrowly on by.

That eighth flag is catching some serious wind at the minute, but Shinnecock falls silent as Tiger Woods coaxes his own birdie chance up towards the cup from long range. It comes up short and breaks right.

Dustin Johnson will probably fancy holing out from here...

The world number one with a 168-yard approach to the flag. It breaks right, swirls down the slope and comes to a halt on the fringes.

Tiger Woods finds the green with his, but the pink-topped Justin Thomas fails to muster the required spin with his approach and it kicks on beyond the cup.
