  1. Fleetwood fightingpublished at 22:42 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    T Fleetwood +5 (14)

Tommy Fleetwood is battling hard. The Englishman is five over after 14 but has just scrambled for a great up and down par after leaving his second shot in the deep stuff.

He's on the same mark as Spaniards Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm. They've all got the par-five 16th on the horizon, a birdie there and pars elsewhere will see them home in decent nick.

John McEnerney: I’d throw a few bob on Jon Rahm & Big Henrik Stenson if I had a few bob. Rahm if he can keep his emotions in check and if The Norse God’s putter stays hot they could well be in the mix come Sunday.

  3. Double bogey for Woodspublished at 22:38 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +3, T Woods +6 (13)

A slight breeze whips through the blue shirt of Tiger Woods, and the American wraps a putt wide and long. Work to do coming back for bogey now. Again it goes wide.. this'll be a four-putt for the three-time US Open winner? Finally, he sinks it.

Dustin Johnson tucks away for par. But Justin Thomas can't follow suit. He bogeys, and slips to three over.

Some 40 feet to make birdie for Tiger Woods. Up the hill, can he reach? No, that's more Usian Bolt than Mo Farah. Started off with speed and intent, but just didn't have the legs.

DJ undercooks his too. When he wanted well done it came off the putter medium rare.

Justin Thomas started furthest away from the flag, but has left himself with the least to do.

  5. Average score creeping higherpublished at 22:30 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

The average score so far in the first round is 76.21 - that's a touch over six over par and creeping ever higher - which puts into context some of the rounds we are seeing today.

Just five players are currently under par. The winning score here in 2004 was Retief Goosen's four under. He won by two from Phil Mickelson. Nobody else beat par.

The wind is clearly not helping and it's refusing to die down, blowing at a reasonably constant 15-20mph, with gusts up to 30mph.

  6. 'Poulter will be chilling out'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

Players like to watch the golf when they're leading. You get in and you can enjoy the fact you've had a great round. Ian Poulter will be chilling out and enjoying his position but not getting carried away as don't forget there are three days left to contend with.

No bother for Dustin Johnson, clipping in to the heart of the green. Tiger Woods, a yard further right than the joint-leader, but leaving his approach a tad shorter.

Justin Thomas the final of the American trio to play. 136 yards to make up, but he comes up the shortest of the lot. In fact, that's drifting back off the green.

John Shaw: This has got a touch of the Chambers Bay in 2015 about it. Fine to make them look a bit daft at times but you don't need to make them look stupid ! ......and it's only Thursday.

Still hoards of people traipsing round after this marquee group in New York, all jostling for position.

You could throw a pair of Justin Thomas' trousers over the group's tee shots, they all hit almost exactly the same line having opted not to try and fly the bunker at the par-four 13th.

A bit too windy for such precision...

  10. How did he miss from there?published at 22:23 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Henley -2 (15)

Russell Henley misses a birdie putt from inside five feet at the par four 15th which would have taken him clear at the top of the leaderboard.

  11. Bogey for DJ, birdie for Thomaspublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +2, T Woods +4 (12)

    Tap-in birdie for Justin Thomas.

Almost a birdie for Tiger Woods, too. A deft little dink from the edge of the green that looked like it might disappear, but just stayed up for par.

DJ's tickles on from the longer cut but watches it slide a little further beyond the flag than he'd have hoped.

Eighteen feet now for the leader to make par. It bobbles off the face, comes up right and Johnson glares back at the turf behind him.

That looked like it was going way right for Dustin Johnson, but it actually just trickles up on to the fringes from 200 yards.

Tiger Woods' approach is a little short.

Now for Justin Thomas. It's not, is it? Is it?! Right on the flag from Thomas, so close to dropping, but a simple birdie putt to come.

    Oliver Wilson

On Dustin Johnson: "There's a reason he's world number one. He's hit a lot of fairways and greens. He looks very cool and calm as usual."

DJ has hit 6 out of 8 fairways so far today, but just 5 out of 11 greens in regulation - well down on his season average of 70%.

  15. Postpublished at 22:10 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

Tiger Woods pumps his tee shot up beyond the 300-yard mark, finding the middle of one of the narrower fairways at Shinnecock Hills. Justin Thomas goes for that option too.

Dustin Johnson puts a little less on it, but still finds the fairway.

Niall Davey: Is it me or do the greens appear very bobbly this year? Like being down at my local municipal course.

Andrew Preistley: I wouldn’t even like to think about what I would score on the 620-yard Par-5 16th hole if I played it!

  17. 'Frustrating for McIlroy'published at 22:01 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

On Rory McIlroy: When you put in the preparation he has for this and to shoot an 80 is just so frustrating. He looked like he was recovering on the back nine but dropping two shots in the last three will be eating away at him.

  18. Bogey for Fisherpublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Fisher +3 (9)

Back-to-back bogeys to reach the turn for Ross Fisher.

He found sand off the tee at the par three 17th after starting on the back nine before needing two putts.

And a hole later, a five at the par four 18th after finding the bunker at the back of the green and then again needing two putts.

  19. Johnson takes outright leadpublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -3, J Thomas +3, T Woods +4 (11)

Tiger finds his way out of that bunker but leaves plenty of work on to save par. He two-putts for bogey. Justin Thomas trickles his putt from the edge of the green, and tidies up for par.

Dustin Johnson has 20 feet for birdie. The world number one fizzes it in with some serious sizzle, and that is hot, hot, hot! It stops almost dead the rim of the cup, before dropping in.

Nailed it. He takes the outright lead.

  20. Seeing the funny sidepublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    G McDowell +8 (2*)

The 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell is laughing at his own misfortune on the second hole.

He found a greenside bunker with his tee shot on the par three and then clattered into the flagstick with his escape only to see the ball ricochet back almost to his feet.

The Northern Irishman is bent over double with laughter. He gives a shrug as if to say what's a man supposed to do? He eventually walks off with a double-bogey five to drop to eight over.
