This has been a wonderful Open Championship. A spectacular venue, the excitement and the buzz in the build up. The brilliant fans and the arrival of the wild weather to throw up a real links test.

Rory McIlroy’s charge for the cut was remarkable, Shane Lowry’s Saturday 63 just sensational.

But to get a winner from the island and for the whole of Royal Portrush to embrace and delight in seeing their triumph was truly great.

“Oles” in the rain. Songs echoing in the wind and a winner from the island on the Open’s return to Northern Ireland for the first time in 68 years. This is a Portrush party, links golf style.

  9. Lowry fights back tears...published at 18:28 British Summer Time 21 July 2019

"I definitely wouldn't be standing here without them," says Lowry after thanking his management.

"My family, what can I say... my mum and dad."

He pauses, he's going to cry is he?

"They sacrificed so much for me and I'm so happy I can give them this trophy tonight."

"The champion golfer of the year is Shane Lowry."

And with that, Lowry walks out from under a tunnel, approaches a wooden table which is home to the Claret Jug and with no hesitation, lifts the famous piece of sporting silverware into the air.

I love the fact Shane Lowry's little daughter is just bobbing around with a smile, making noise and yet with no real idea of what's happening.

Her dad stands in what looks like a temporary office with a canvas of Henrik Stenson kissing the Claret Jug on one wall and another of Francesco Molinari with the trophy from last year.

Now big Shane is about to emerge to collect his big silver jug.

There's not too many Irish sports men or women who can transcend North and South Ireland. Barry McGuigan was obviously one and now Shane Lowry is about to become another.

Wow. Just wow. The roar that went up around the 18th grandstand was spine-tingling when Shane Lowry lifted his arms to the crowd.

A thousand hugs for Shane Lowry. Everyone around the 18th green wants to grab him. He leaves the arena, walks over the bridge to the scoring cabin, where Brooks Koepka waits to embrace him. More roars as he drops down the steps from the bridge.

He's won by six shots. His Open, his by a mile.
