    Finau & English v Lowry & Hatton

Nice clip on from Tyrrell Hatton who bumps his ball on to and over the putting surface to around eight feet.

Harris English goes with exactly the same tactics but comes up well short. That doesn't dissuade Tony Finau from going the same route....

That's much better into around Hatton range. Shane Lowry is eyeing up his putt from the fringe.

    Finau & English v Lowry & Hatton

Lots of hullabaloo still on the first tee as the announcer introduces Saturday's first fourballs match. Standard boos for the Europeans.

Tyrrell Hatton up first, he lands it right. Just about on the fairway.

Shane Lowry brushes those off jeers and booms a drive that is rolling up towards the green. Has it just crept on? I think it has. That's a brilliant start for the Irish golfer.

Tony Finau and Harris English both find the fairway for the hosts. Four balls positioned nicely.

    USA 9 Europe 3

This is the first time since the world rankings began in 1986 that the top-ranked American player, in this case Dustin Johnson, won a match in each of the first three sessions at the Ryder Cup.

It says a lot about why the USA struggled despite having Tiger Woods and even Phil Mickelson around - perhaps they were just too big of a star to fit into a team format.

Johnson has stepped up big time and, most importantly, he's leading by example and has fully slipped into team mode without any problems.

This could be a new era of Team USA in the Ryder Cup and they'll be so hard to beat for years to come.

We have talked about this being the strongest US team ever from a rankings point of view, with that strength in depth you can afford to rest players and rotate it.

It just shows the depth they have, so when we come into the singles tomorrow it is a massive uphill battle for us.

The Americans are so confident that this is over - and who can blame them - that Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger are chugging beers thrown to them from the crowd on the first tee.

Good job they're not playing this afternoon...

  7. Largest lead after three sessionspublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    USA 9 Europe 3

It's a huge and historic lead the USA now hold - the largest lead any side has had after three sessions since 1975. That was against Great Britain & Ireland as Europe didn't join the event until 1979!

  8. 'We've got talented options'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2UP Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger (F)

Justin Thomas: "I don't think any of us expected anything, just to go out and play well. Stricks deserves a lot of credit. We've got a lot of talented options, we are all great friends, our team is playing great and I am happy to go cheer them on this afternoon."

That bottom game, Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy against Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, that will be a real battle. I am absolutely not confident, this is a session we need 4-0 if we have even the slightest hope of trying to retain this trophy.

Amazing how many people end up following the players from ‘inside the ropes’.

Probably a couple of hundred were strolling towards the 18th green behind Thomas and Spieth.

This includes family, friends, support staff, VIPs and media. Then there are the thousands lining the fairways.

More than 10 people watching from close range has my knees knocking on the local course.

These boys brush it off without even a second thought. Amazing to watch.

  12. 'We played good golf'published at 18:04 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2UP Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger (F)

Here's Jordan Spieth, who along with Justin Thomas was three down before fighting back to win the match: "Getting to three down is tough, at two down you can go on a quick run, but three down the percentage go way down.

"Luckily it was only through six, we knew we would have a chance in this wind, those guys had a few putts they missed that Sergio (Garcia) and (Jon) Rahm holed yesterday.

"We felt like we played good golf for two rounds and deserved at least one point."

The volume is sharply turned up on the 18th green as Thomas and Spieth celebrate their win.

JT rocks his body to further gee up the American fans.

Somebody even lobs down a Stars and Stripes beach ball.

    Party time!

Let's hear from the USA team's elder statesman Dustin Johnson and their most junior player Collin Morikawa after they won yet another point.

Morikawa told Sky Sports: “DJ’s awesome, he's one of the best players in the world and when you have a partner like him, it helps! We had some ups and some downs but we’re glad to have won a point."

Johnson added: “We played good, we made a couple of mistakes but in tough conditions on a tough golf course you’re going to make some mistakes.

"Collin's a great player and I feel we’re really good in this alternate shot format. We enjoyed it and it was really nice to get a point."

  17. America land the final foursome pointpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2&1 Cantlay & Schauffele v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (F)

After that stunning putt, Lee Westwood's tee shot goes far left, and Patrick Cantley lands plumb on the green - and this final match could all be over with a hole to spare.

Fitzpatrick, to his credit, chips it up the sheer bank of grass and railway sleepers onto the green.

Xander Schauffele rolls in his out to within a whisker of the cup and ... it is all over.

The caps come off and Europe concede. The Americans take it and it is a painful end to the morning session

  18. Spieth & Thomas finish 2UPpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2UP Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger (F)

Lovely shot from Viktor Hovland, but it comes after the Europeans had already found the water and it's not enough... Jordan Spieth nudges on to the green to wrap up the match and stretch the United States' lead out even further. Handshakes and smiles for the American pair. A long way back now...

  19. Wiesberger finds the waterpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    1UP Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger (17)

There's some serious wind blowing back down the fairway at 18 and Justin Thomas can't thrash his approach through it, coming up short of the smooth stuff.

Bernd Wiesberger will take it on from the semi-rough, his expression says it's not good... and it disappears into the creek. Looks like it's all over for Europe on the last.

  20. Westwood birdie - two down, two holes to gopublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2UP Cantley & Schauffele v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (16)

Patrick Cantlay comes out of the far left rough onto the fairway for the second shot and Xander Schaufelle makes amends for his wayward tee shot to hit the heart of the green, about 15 feet of the cup.

Matt Fitzpatrick has to find the green but the ball trundles on by about 15 feet as well with the US fans urging the ball on.

    Putt off time.

Lee Westwood has to putt this - and oh my goodness - it is a birdie. After a day of mediocre putting at best he pulls it out when it counts.

That lays down the gauntlet to Cantlay to hole his birdie putt to win the match - and he misses it.

Europe claw one back - two down with two to go.

    Dare we hope?
