Josh Verrills: Unsure as to why Eddie Jones wouldn’t include Cipriani on the bench for today’s match against South Africa. Especially given his end of season form. Not too sure what else he has to do to be given decent game time at international level

    BBC Radio 5 live

England and Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care on BBC Radio 5 live: "We know we weren't good enough in the Six Nations - in attack we were a bit stale and in defence we shipped too many points. But we know when we put in a performance in attack and defence over 80 minutes we can be on fire.

"I'm sure the lads have been putting in the work over in South Africa, and I've spoken to a few of the boys out there and they said it's been tough but really good. They're itching to get out there and they're ready to prove everyone wrong."

  5. 'The boys have got what it takes' - Carepublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 9 June 2018

South Africa v England (16:05 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 live

England and Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care on BBC Radio 5 live: "The last two years we've been blessed because it's been a brilliant few years, to go 19 games unbeaten was amazing. If you look in those games maybe we got the bounce of the ball and a few decisions went our way.

"So, when you look at the Six Nations the bounce of the ball didn't go our way, and we came up against good teams who really wanted to beat England. I think on other days we could have won four or even five of those Six Nations matches, and it didn't happen.

"I think personally it's the best thing that could have happened to this England team - to have some disappointment over the Six Nations - and more big challenges this summer.

"What a place to come to try and get back to winning ways this afternoon - it's going to be an incredibly difficult task but I think the boys have got what it takes to get the win today."

Eddie Jones likes having Mike Brown in the squad and he was very vocal about having him in the team. Playing away from home you need experience, and Brown brings that, but saying that, I don't think he'd be playing if all England's wingers were fit.

I do think Jones has been itching to play Elliot Daly at full-back though - we've heard he's been playing there a lot in training and he's got all the attributes to perform well there. He could be a world star for England, and he's got a better chance of doing that from full-back than from the wing.

Siya Kolisi on the significance of the being the first black Springboks captain: "I'm excited just to be Springboks captain - I know how big a task it is to play England. We are just focusing on England and we know we are ready."

On wearing the same number shirt - 6 - as former president Nelson Mandela did at the 1995 World Cup final: "I'm a calm kind of guy. I'll just make sure I play well. If I put outside pressure on myself it'll become too much for me. After the three games I will sit down and have a moment."

With Trevor Nyakane declared unfit (rib injury) Wilco Louw replaces him in the front row - and thus is the only survivor from the side that was defeated by Wales in Washington last Saturday (that was a strange spectacle).

Aside from that Wasps' full-back Willie le Roux and Sale scrum-half Faf de Klerk are in the XV - it's the first time they have played for the Boks since 2016.

Blindside flanker Siya Kolisi is South Africa's first ever black captain.

  11. 'England need to kick more early'published at 15:52 British Summer Time 9 June 2018

South Africa v England (16:05 BST)

    Matt Dawson
Former Lions and England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 live

Teams are starting to work England out - the Barbarians worked them out - I know it's a different team, but it was the same methodology. I think England need to kick more early on to gain territory.

I think Ben Youngs can be key to that - he's probably the best kicking scrum-half we have - and he links with George Ford really well, too. Henry Slade adds another dimension in the midfield as well, being left-footed, so there's a few different options for England.

  12. 'It's a big day for both captains' - Jonespublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 9 June 2018

South Africa v England (16:05 BST)

England head coach Eddie Jones speaking on Sky Sports: "We've had a good preparation and we've done some good training out here. It's a great place to tour, very historical and cultural, so we're ready to go.

"I think we've had three losses - I wouldn't count the Barbarians game as an England game - so we've had three losses, not four.

"It's a big day for both captains - they're both very influential players in their teams. Siya Kolisi is a big runner and a big player for them, and Owen Farrell is obviously our goalkicker. They'll both be looking to play well today."

Wasps' new loose forward (he's yet to play in the Premiership) was until the end of 2017 turning out for New Zealand youth teams but instead decided to 'go full international' with England - which he qualifies for through his parents.

Eddie Jones has fast-tracked him into the setup and now on the bench for the first match against SA.

Former Argentine international Agustin Pichot - now World Rugby chairman - queried the selection., external

England skipper Owen Farrell said: "His selection isn't being questioned by anyone in our camp.

"Brad has fitted in really well. He's had a bit to learn, but he's got on and learned it. I've been really impressed by him. He's definitely got the right attitude."

Kyle Sinckler gets the nod at tighthead prop and will be alongside Mako Vunipola and Jamie George in the front row - cover Harry Williams is on the bench.

There was a lot of bluster surrounding Danny Cipriani's recall but he's not in the 23 - Piers Francis provides the centre and fly-half cover from the bench.
