Goalkeeper Jack Bonham scored the winning penalty to send Stoke past Walsall in a shootout to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.

After the game finished 0-0 in 90 minutes, Bonham saved from Albert Adomah before stepping up himself to take Stoke's fifth spot-kick and score to win the tie.

Bonham kept the game level deep into the second half with a fingertip save from Jonny Stuttle, with the Walsall substitute also shooting wide from close range as time ticked down.

Stuttle then fired Walsall's second penalty of the shootout over the bar before Bonham finished the job for the hosts.

Both sides made 10 changes from Saturday and both had their moments to win the tie.

Walsall almost took a first-half lead when a cross from the right found Josh Gordon six yards out but he could only shoot into the side netting.

Stoke came closest in the second half when Robert Bozenik chested down for Jamie Donley to shoot and he struck the bar.

Donley had earlier pounced on a loose pass to shoot from the edge of the area and force Walsall goalkeeper Sam Hornby to tip his strike around the post.
