We saw that happen at Crystal Palace the other Monday night. Bit of a swing from Isak but the gap was there.

I noticed Jean-Claude Blanc next to Sir Dave Brailsford in the directors' box.

Blanc is taking over as interim chief executive until Omar Berrada arrives in July.

He has vast football experience from his time as senior executive at both Juventus and Paris St-Germain.

Blanc is expected to be the face of the club at Premier League meetings and with the European Clubs' Association.

Alejandro Garnacho gives the ball away too easily and Alexander Isak drags a shot well wide from the edge of the box.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer, with 21 league goals this season, gets the ball after a diagonal run from Mykhailo Mudryk but can only send the ball straight at Bart Verbruggen and it is an easy save.

Manchester United have fared better in midweek games - ie Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - than at weekends in recent times.

They are unbeaten in 14 Premier League home games on those days, a run going back to May 2021 when they lost 4-2 to Liverpool.

Also the Red Devils have only lost their final home league game in one of the last 16 seasons, 2-0 to Cardiff in 2018-19.

I think Man Utd have to find something, they have to find a spark.

They have got to give the fans something to cheer about, I feel it is going to be a tough night for them.

If Manchester United lose tonight, they will finish no better than eighth this season and have no more than 57 points.

In both metrics, it would be their worst return since 1989-90, the famous season when they won the FA Cup to keep Sir Alex Ferguson in his job.

During that season, a banner bearing the words 'Ta-ra Fergie' was displayed during a home defeat by Crystal Palace.

I am not expecting a banner tonight but defeat would leave Erik ten Hag in a very precarious position.

Chance for Brighton. Tariq Lamptey with a cross from the right side of the penalty area and it falls to Simon Adingra and he spins and shoots. Away keeper Djordje Petrovic is left rooted to the spot and wouldn't have got anywhere near it if it had been on target.

Luckily for Chelsea, the ball goes just wide of the post.

Risky defending from Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, with his arms wrapped around the waist of former team-mate Lewis Dunk, who hits the deck.

Cucurella gets away with it and referee Michael Salisbury says no penalty.

Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher leading by example with a vital clearing header from almost under his own crossbar as Pascal Gross was waiting to convert the cross for Brighton.

Noni Madueke with a purposeful run at the home defence. He starts on the right wing, gets into the box and on to his favoured left foot only for Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen to get down smartly at the near post to keep out the strike.

I like Alexander Isak and since he has come to the Premier League he has been fantastic.

If Newcastle keep him fit for 20 games then he will be getting a lot more than 20 goals [a season]. Isak can play down the middle or out-wide, he is a quality player.

Raphael Varane is here tonight for a farewell appearance at Old Trafford.

Varane is not playing but there will be a lap of appreciation after the game, so the France defender will be part of that.

He confirmed yesterday he will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires on 30 June.

Chelsea have earned 29 points in 2024, with only the top three clubs accruing more.

The Blues can win four consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since October 2022. However, they have conceded 61 top-flight goals this season, their worst defensive record since 1990-91.
