Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke to TNT Sports following Thursday's 4-2 defeat by Olympiakos in their Europa Conference League semi-final first leg:

"Congratulations to them. We didn't play like we are playing. We need to keep being consistent.

"They deserved to win. They are a good team. They have experience.

"It's not about luck. We didn't play well. We have to play better. They deserved to win."

On his message to his players: "Prepare for the match next Thursday. Try to play better, compete better."

Aston Villa captain John McGinn faced up to a chaotic Europa Conference League semi-final first-leg loss to Olympiakos, and said: "Everything that could have gone wrong, did."

Ayoub El Kaabi scored a hat-trick for the visitors, netting twice early on.

Ollie Watkins reduced the deficit for Unai Emery's side and Moussa Diaby equalised moments after the interval.

Olympiakos roared back in front with an El Kaabi penalty and a deflected strike from Santiago Hezze.

Douglas Luiz missed a late penalty, meaning Villa must overturn a two-goal deficit in the second leg in Piraeus on 9 May to reach their first European final since 1982.

Right, let's move on from the newspapers to more reaction from Thursday football, which was a bad night for Aston Villa in Europe, but a little better on the home front.

Unai Emery's side face an uphill task to reach the Europa Conference League final following a 4-2 defeat at home to Greek side Olympiakos in the first leg.

But their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League were given a boost after Tottenham - their closest rivals for a fourth-place finish in the Premier League - lost 2-0 at Chelsea.

We will sum up the action from both games and get reaction from the managers, as well as former Villa player Ian Taylor, who has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

After that, we will look ahead to the weekend's Premier League action with a busy day of manager news conferences, starting this morning with the Liverpool and Newcastle bosses.

News West Ham's technical director Tim Steidten has been barred from the first team by manager David Moyes is not a good look.

Steidten is leading the hunt for a new manager, which has seen the Hammers linked with Julen Lopetegui, Paulo Fonseca and Ruben Amorim in recent days. Wolves boss Gary O'Neil - a former West Ham player - has also been mentioned.

Given he still has a job and is not due to have his own talks about the future with the West Ham hierarchy until after the season has ended, Moyes has concluded it is potentially disruptive to have Steidten around.

This is understandable. But it hardly smacks of a harmonious situation.

West Ham do still have - albeit very slim - a chance of qualifying for Europe for a fourth successive season. And if they hold on to their present ninth position, it would represent their joint seventh highest finish in almost 40 years.

However, many fans have been critical of the style of play under Moyes and it seems inevitable he will leave the London Stadium at the end of the season.

What a difference 25 games make. Eight games played, and the media and fan furore about Spurs winning a title, Angeball created (whatever that was). Ange touted for the Liverpool job. Funnily enough, the only person grounded and kept things in perspective during the whole situation was Ange himself.

The National League is in talks with the Premier League over a new competition which would see its top clubs taking on top flight Under-21 sides.

If it is given the green light it is understood the new competition would be launched next season but would not impact the EFL Trophy, which also features Premier League Under-21 sides.

It is understood National League clubs likely to be involved were told of the plans in a meeting yesterday. League officials are now reflecting on the feedback and are set for further talks with the Premier League.

Premier League chiefs believe it will expose younger players to more meaningful matches against adults, which will help their development.

The National League has recently aligned itself with the Premier League, although it was not consulted over the controversial decision to scrap FA Cup replays from the first round onwards.

Its general manager Mark Ives joined Premier League chief executive Richard Masters at a reception at the House of Lords to outline their joint uncertainty over the Football Governance Bill, and in particular the new regulator. Ives believes the potential for ‘football’ to have to fund issues involving the regulator potentially means National League clubs will be exposed to additional costs they cannot afford.

A third consecutive Premier League defeat for Ange Postecoglu and his Tottenham side at Stamford Bridge makes Champions League qualification almost out of reach.

Spurs need near-perfect form from their final four matches and hope that Aston Villa pick up minimal points from their remaining three matches to stand any chance of a fourth-place finish.

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Stamford Bridge

Ange Postecoglou said Tottenham lacked "belief and conviction" but promised to find a fix as their Champions League hopes suffered a blow with defeat at Chelsea.

Spurs were beaten 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and are now seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, albeit with a game in hand.

Tottenham have games against Liverpool and title-chasing Manchester City among their remaining fixtures and have now lost three in a row in the Premier League.

"They've lost a little bit of belief and conviction in their football and that's for me to fix," Postecoglou said of his side.

Tottenham made an excellent start to the season under Postecoglou and their free-flowing football was praised as the former Celtic manager looked to bring Champions League football back to the club.

However, Spurs have won just two of their latest seven games and it leaves them needing to sharply find a return to winning ways while hoping that Villa slump.

    Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to keep them in the hunt for European football - and deal a massive blow to their London rivals' hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring when the defender rose to meet a Conor Gallagher free-kick with a powerful header mid-way through the first half.

There was a lengthy video assistant referee check for a possible block by Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on Brennan Johnson in the build-up, but the goal was given.

Spurs did not create many chances and Cristian Romero had their best opportunity when he headed wide inside the six-yard-box in the first half.

But Chelsea took control in the 71st minute when Cole Palmer's free-kick from the edge of the area struck the bar and Nicolas Jackson headed the rebound into an empty net.

Victory sent Chelsea into eighth place, just two points behind Newcastle in seventh and a possible European spot.
