1. Will Still: From Football Manager to football managerpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 2 May

    Will Still, remember him?

Football Focus met the Belgian-born Englishman last season became the youngest head coach or manager in Europe's major leagues when he was appointed manager of French club Reims.

Still's tinkering on computer game Football Manager helped inspire him to get into management for real and his Reims side went on a remarkable run last season before ultimately finishing 11th in Ligue 1.

  2. European qualification explainedpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 2 May

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Borussia Dortmund's victory over PSG last night killed off any chance of a fifth English team in next season's Champions League.

It also means the recipients of the European Performance Spots - Germany and Italy - could get six teams in the expanded 36-team competition as Borussia Dortmund and Italian duo Roma and Atalanta could qualify anyway, by winning the Champions League and Europa League, respectively - with the European Performance Spot an addition on top of that.

For Premier League clubs, the situation is now clear:

    • Top four go into the Champions League
    • Fifth-placed team goes into the Europa League
    • If Manchester United win the FA Cup, they go into the Europa League
    • If Manchester City win the FA Cup, the sixth-placed team goes into the Europa League
    • The next team that hasn't qualified for Europe (must be sixth or seventh) goes into the Conference League play-offs

Bruno Fernandes' quotes on his future were reported in Wednesday's edition of the Sun...which said the Portugal midfielder had "stunned Manchester United by hinting he could quit [the club] this summer".

The future of a number of Manchester United players, Jadon Sancho included, should be a hot topic over the summer during an expected restructure of the squad.

One player that might not have expected to be part of that reshuffle was captain Bruno Fernandes, until quotes surfaced on Wednesday that cast doubt over his plans following the summer's European Championships.

However, it seems Fernandes' words may have been more measured than some reports suggested.

Here is a translation of the interview the midfielder gave with DAZN in his native Portuguese. Asked about his future, he said: "I haven't, in this moment, thought about other things. Obviously this doesn't depend just on me - a player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, they have to want him to stay here and, at the moment, I feel that is the case on both sides.

"I don't think much about the future, because obviously this season was not at the level that I wanted - both on individual and collective levels.

"We can still finish this season by winning the [FA] Cup. Soon after this we have a European Championship [with Portugal] that is really important to us.

"Because of this, if I'm really honest, if something happens that I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it will only be after the European Championship, because nothing will take away my focus from this [Premier League] finale and the FA Cup final, and the European Championship, because there is nothing more important than this at this moment."

Man Utd are the only club who still subscribe to the antiquated "No player is bigger than the club" mentality. It's 2024, top clubs recognise that some players are MUCH bigger than the club and give them preferential treatment accordingly. Can you seriously imagine Pep disciplining De Bruyne or Klopp publicly humiliating Salah for turning up late for training a few times, or just generally phoning it in? Of course they wouldn't!

  6. Evans & Martial back for Man Utdpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 2 May

Crystal Palace v Man Utd (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United will not be playing in the Champions League next season but they still need to secure a place in the Europa League, which requires a couple of victories from the remaining four games.

As Erik ten Hag has said repeatedly this season, United have been decimated by injuries. However, the club posted pictures of Jonny Evans and Anthony Martial this morning and confirmed they have returned to training.

Evans has recovered from a muscular issue that flared up last month while Martial has been missing since the beginning of December with a groin problem.

Ten Hag is due to speak to the media this lunchtime ahead of Monday's trip to Crystal Palace, so we might find out more then.

Announcements of Klopp & Hayes leaving must have a negative psychological impact on players as doubt creeps in on personal futures. Also all the media and social chatter, how can players avoid it these days?

But first we have some Women's Super League news as Arsenal have handed a first professional contract to striker Michelle Agyemang.

Agyemang, 18, made her WSL debut in November 2022 and has gone on to make five senior appearance for the Gunners.

She's spent this season on a dual-registration with Championship club Watford, scoring six goals despite Watford finishing bottom.

    Contract situation: Contracted until 2027

    Estimated market value: £34m

Linked with: Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Tottenham

BBC Sport football news reporter Nick Mashiter: Villa have insisted he is not for sale with manager Unai Emery making his stance clear in January.

Yet, even with probable Champions League qualification bringing in extra TV revenue, selling the academy graduate would help the club in their efforts to comply with profit and sustainability after they lost £119.6m for the year ending 31 May, 2023.

BBC Sport football news reporter Nick Mashiter: Alex Scott’s £25m move to Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023 and Adam Wharton’s £22m transfer from Blackburn to Crystal Palace in January are likely to be the minimum benchmarks – but with Dewsbury-Hall having Premier League experience, Leicester are likely to demand more.

It is about time Eric ten Hag grew up. The days of expectation following a demand for a public apology are long gone. Players need to be managed not castigated. Well done Sancho in responding to the poor management skills of ETH. Sancho is more likely to return than Ten Hag to stay!

Why would Sancho want to try again at United? Especially at the minute, hardly somewhere you'd want to be. He's happy at Dortmund who got to a Champions League semi. Think that's a decent place to be.

I can't speculate on why Jadon Sancho didn't perform at United, but I do know that his performances were lacklustre, one-dimensional and that he didn't have a single man of the match performance whilst at the club.

Contract situation: Signed five-year deal to 2028 last season

    Linked with: Paris St-Germain

BBC Sport chief football news reporter Simon Stone: At his best, he has a combination of lightning speed and finishing power that frightens any defences. However, too often he drifts out of games and his work rate has been questioned.

As one of United’s highest earners, realistically the market for Rashford is small. It seems far more likely he'll remain at Old Trafford.

  19. Six homegrown stars who could be sold for pure profitpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 2 May

Supporters love homegrown players coming through into the first team, hailing them as 'one of their own' and the connection between club and fans.

However, Premier League club accountants also relish academy graduates - with a growing trend of selling them to generate 'pure profit' and help navigate the strict financial rules which have bitten hard this season.

After Manchester City academy graduate Cole Palmer left for Chelsea in a surprise £42.5m deal last summer, could we see a flurry of similar transfers this summer, including Marcus Rashford?

Surely this whole debacle around a player who as so much natural ability and in all probability should be a player very much in a England squad says so much about the present situation at the club. Having read pieces in last 48 hours on the BBC sports pages detailing Sancho's character what is really going on?
