  1. 'Slot's Liverpool more in control'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 23 October

RB Leipzig v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Steph Houghton
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There's a lot more control about the whole game from Liverpool under Arne Slot.

Jurgen Klopp was an unbelievable manager and Liverpool were so successful under him, but the picture is more clearer to see now. It's not so gung-ho and everybody running everywhere.

You look at Trent Alexander-Arnold and how he's improved defensively. But the system has helped him because he is getting the help from the likes of Mohamed Salah coming back and Ryan Gravenberch going back to help him.

Ibrahima Konate is brilliant in one-on-one situations and it's all come together for Alexander-Arnold this season.

  2. Injured Jota misses trip to Leipzigpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 23 October

RB Leipzig v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

So as we've seen there's no place in the Liverpool squad tonight for Diogo Jota after Arne Slot confirmed the striker would miss the game with a "bruised upper body".

Jota was forced off during the first half of Sunday's Premier League win over Cheslea after being brought down by Tosin Adarabioyo.

"He got a knock, like we all saw, when he was trying to go to goal, brought down," said Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

"That was not the biggest problem, but I think the other player fell on to him and that hurt him that much that he couldn't continue to play and he couldn't come with us for now.

"It's difficult to judge at this moment of time to see how long that's going to take. It's bruised."

Barcelona fans must wince when they see Bayern Munich's name.

The German giants have 10 wins to Barca's two in their 13 meetings, with just one draw.

What's more startling is the 33 goals scored by Bayern while Barca have only managed 13.

Liverpool haven't been shy in raiding RB Leipzig for their top talent and two of them return to the Red Bull Arena tonight.

Dominik Szoboszlai moved to Merseyside in July 2023 in a deal worth £60 million while Ibrahima Konate signed for £35m back in May 2021.

  8. De Bruyne 'doesn't feel good'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 23 October

Man City v Sparta Prague (20:00 BST)

As we've seen, still no sign of Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

City boss Pep Guardiola said his Belgian playmaker "doesn't feel good" and will not be rushed back into action,

The 33-year-old has missed the Premier League champions' past six fixtures with a muscular problem.

City are already without Rodri and Oscar Bobb with long-term injuries.

"Except for Rodri and Oscar, the other ones are in training and getting better, but guys like Kevin, for example, are not exactly fit," the manager said.

"It's not a new issue but he doesn't feel completely fine. Kevin is not 22 years old, he has to be fit for his football. He doesn't feel comfortable that he can express his incredible potential at his best.

"He is training better but he doesn't feel good. He said he doesn't feel good. If you don't feel good, take your time."

  13. Brest's 'magic' rise from amateur football to Champions Leaguepublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 23 October

In Brittany, north-west France, football is a cultural driving force.

Thanks to eight-time French champions Nantes, and Rennes, whose academy has produced France stars like Eduardo Camavinga and Ousmane Dembele, it has always had a fierce reputation.

But after living in the shadow of their more dominant neighbours, Stade Brestois 29 achieved something remarkable last season: Champions League qualification.

Over the past 33 years, Brest have fought back from the financial wilderness.

Like Bordeaux are experiencing now, Brest faced a spell in the amateur leagues after financially overextending themselves and collapsing.

In fact, Brest existed in those ranks between 1991 and 2004 before turning professional again.

Following promotion to Ligue 1 in 2019, Brest survived on a small budget with facilities that were hardly fit for purpose.

One local journalist described their stadium as "from the Middle Ages" - a new one is in the works - while a source describes Brest as "the end of the world in a football city".

People are said to pride themselves on "character, humility and hard work", and those qualities resurrected the club in its darkest hour.

After struggling for five years, many expected them to go down last season. Instead, they finished third. Now, they are taking part in their first Champions League campaign.

  15. 'A tough test for Liverpool'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 23 October

RB Leipzig v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Premier League striker on the Football Daily podcast

It will be a tough test against RB Leipzig, who are always a front-foot team, but I think all things being equal, Liverpool's start to the season under the new manager, I don't think it couldn't have gone any better really.

I know they had the defeat against Nottingham Forest but for Slot to come in, such a short space of time, I know it's the same squad as last season. It's interesting there wasn't much work in terms of bringing transfers in, but they've defended brilliantly, there's a nice balance to the play.

At the weekend Chelsea gave them a really good game. They've got so many players who have such nouse in terms of knowing how to win games, I love Kelleher as a backup goalkeeper to Alisson [Becker], I think he is exceptionally sound as a goalkeeper and extremely confident.

Virgil van Dijk looks strong, [Ibrahima] Konate's on his game this season, Curtis Jones came in against Chelsea and has given them good options in the middle of the park and they've got good squad depth and they'll need every bit of that. With the fixtures coming thick and fast, the squad will be utilised but Liverpool but are in a really good place at this moment in time.

  17. Will we see Champions League records?published at 19:04 British Summer Time 23 October

Man City v Sparta Prague (20:00 BST)

    Conor McNamara
BBC commentator at the Etihad Stadium

City didn't play their best on Sunday but they found a way to win against Wolves.

City haven't lost at home in the Champions League in six years now and if they avoid defeat tonight here against Czech side Sparta Prague, they will set a new Champions League record.

They will be the favourites. If the Czech team were to upset Manchester City tonight, they would have set a bit of Champions League history to do so because no Czech team has ever beaten an English club in the Champions League.

  19. Szoboszlai doing 'dirty job' for Redspublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 23 October

RB Leipzig v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    SzoboszlaiImage source, Getty Images

Dominik Szoboszlai says he is doing a "dirty job" for Liverpool and insists it is more "important" than him standing out with an improved goal return.

The 23-year-old is yet to score in the Premier League this season, despite playing in all eight fixtures. After Sunday's win over Chelsea, pockets of the fanbase criticised the midfielder for losing possession frequently, while others praised his high work-rate on a day where the Reds battled to a hard-earned victory.

This season, Szoboszlai has found himself as the most advanced of Liverpool's three midfielders.

Asked about if he was happy with his form before facing former club RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday, he said: "It can be always better so no. I can play even better. I can score more goals and do more assists. But I am doing a dirty job for the team and that is most important for me. We are top of league and if I don’t score goals that is more important.

Szoboszlai says his role has not changed markedly under Arne Slot compared to that overseen by Jurgen Klopp last season but he concedes he will keep "working" to "be in position to score more goals", adding "it takes time".

"Last year I was doing the same. It is not new," he added. "I'm going to do it all the time for my team until we succeed. Doesn’t matter for me if we don’t score and we are top of the table, that is most important."

  20. Foden 'feels much better'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 23 October

Man City v Sparta Prague (20:00 BST)

Phil Foden, who last season scored 28 goals for club and country and was named PFA Player of the Year, has had a slow start to this season.

But the 24-year-old was instrumental in City's 2-1 Premier League victory at Wolves on Sunday, delivering the corner which led to John Stones' stoppage-time winner. And he's earned a place in the starting line-up this evening.

"He feels much better. The minutes he played last game, for example," Guardiola said.

"With Phil, you realise immediately when he is happy and fit and mentally in the right moment. You realise he's getting better and better."
