    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Martin Keown
Former England defender on TNT Sports

Quietly Unai Emery is taking this club Aston Villa back to the big time. It has been 40 or so years since they won the Champions League, but it feels like something is happening again. It is all coming back again.

There is something special about this club and this stadium and now they have a special manager who is putting something special together. They were fourth from bottom [in the Premier League] when he arrived. It is incredible what he is doing right now.

  4. 'Resilience and maturity building in this Villa team'published at 22:54 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on TNT Sports

This Aston Villa side have resilience. They had tough moments tonight and got through them and claimed a comfortable win in the end. They had tough moments at the weekend [at Fulham[, went 1-0 down and came back to win. It is not only when it is going well but even in the times that aren't so good they stay calm. There is a maturity building into this team now.

  5. 'Exciting times for Villa'published at 22:50 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Matthew Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Aston Villa have got squad that can grow. Having players like Tyrone Mings coming back from injury is great. They also have players like Morgan Rogers who is establishing himself and showing people what he can do.

It's an exciting time for them. Matty Cash spoke about how the club have gone from strength to strength in his four years at the club. They haven't taken a sideward step during that period and all he's seen is development.

At the moment, Villa have got that momentum. They are only going forward. Where will they end up? We are all excited to see.

  6. 'Aston Villa won't fear anybody'published at 22:47 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Jacob Tanswell
Football writer for the Athletic on BBC Radio 5 Live

Last December Aston Villa beat Man City and Arsenal, they won't fear anybody.

Emery will a devise a game-pan to expose the opponent's weakness. Aston Villa rarely get beat here and it is so special.

  7. 'Duran is on fire'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Matthew Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was amazing how Aston Villa started their Champions League campaign against the big boys - Bayern Munich.

But this was a tricky game tonight. They were the favourites tonight. They are at home and they had to drive the game and tempo, and they did it really, really well.

Jhon Duran got a goal again and he's on fire. Villa have great competition for that centre forward role with him and Ollie Watkins capable of scoring goals.

It's a win for Arsenal, but a very unconvincing win, and not great preparation for Liverpool on Sunday.

  9. 'We stayed close to our identity'published at 22:42 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar Donetsk boss Marino Pusic speaking to TNT Sports:

"We knew it would be tough. The way they play, the power. We're not used to these games in our league. We were disciplined but didn't get much time on the ball. They were better than us in the first half but at 1-0 you have a chance. When I see how we played in the second half, we made some small changes, but I think we dominated at times in the second half. I think we deserved a goal. Playing Arsenal away, always difficult in Champions League.

"Serious chance for us at the end and the goalkeeper made a few good saves. We had nothing to lose so we tried, we showed up and showed ourselves.

"We made some changes and the message was it's just 1-0. You still have a chance against everybody at 1-0. I told them to believe. All good endings start with good believing - that was my message.

"We compete with everybody. It's 11 v 11 and you always have a chance. If you don't believe, don't show up. Stay close to our identity, how we play how we want to progress and create. I'm very proud of my players. Our schedule is tough to travel. When I see the attitude and the positivity I'm proud."

On travelling schedule: "Tomorrow we fly back to Poland and then we drive on the bus to the train station and then take the night train which is around 20 hours. It's a tough one. But this is the way it is."

On the fans: "It's beautiful to see these people. We like to give these people something to be proud of. You can see what passion they have for the country and the club. Oleksandr [Zinchenko] was our guest in the changing room at the end of the game. Great guy, we love him."

  10. 'Calafiori will be a massive loss'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

    It's such an intense period.

Injuries puts pressure on the squad. Arsenal are missing key players such as Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.

It was the way Riccardo Calafiori fell. When he went down again, you think there's something there. It is so unfortunate as he's been brilliant since he come to Arsenal. He can play in the midfield role, he has the awareness for that.

Calafiori will be a massive loss at the weekend. Arsenal need to find a way of muddling their way through.

Tonight it is job done. There will be disappointment as Mikel Arteta would have liked things easier, but this is top level Champions League football.

    Arsenal are still a force.

  11. 'We have to move forward'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 22 October

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya speaking to TNT Sports:

"Main factor is to be concentrated and be there for the team to keep the clean sheet. That's the main thing. Three points and a clean sheet for the team."

On atmosphere after Bournemouth loss: "We were very disappointed. We literally kick ourselves in the foot. We made mistakes and it's the third time this season that's happened. We have to move forward, not dwell on it. We created chances to win the game and they had the chance to score. Very difficult game. We got away with it with the two games before with Man City and Brighton but not this time.

"The journey back was tough but we haven't had time to dwell on it. We played well tonight especially in the first half. We had two days to prepare the game but the main thing is the three points. We could've scored a few more. The desire of the team to keep the clean sheet at the end is important."

On not being involved against Shakhtar: "When I'm not involved I try to just focus on the ball and to talk and shout and keep concentrated the whole game. I don't think I touched the ball the first 15-20 minutes so you have to be involved and try to organise the defence. Dmytro Riznyk played a good game and made some good saves. Top goalie."

On Shakhtar: "You can see they are talented. Good team. Offer a lot on the ball. Great team, admirable what they're doing especially with everything they're going through."

  12. Calafiori injury 'bit of a worry'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports:

"Very pleased with the result. Always difficult in Champions League. We should've scored more in first half and the second half I felt a bit of fatigue. Playing 60 minutes with 10 men a few days ago is difficult. We left the game a bit open but we dug in for three points."

On penalty miss: "I don't know if that was related to fatigue. Credit to Shakhtar, they are brave. When you give them time on the ball and you lose the ball you will suffer. I don't know [why Kai Havertz didn't take the penalty]. He is one of the takers but Leo took it."

On Gabriel Martinelli: "He was really good. Looked really sharp tonight. You could see he was fresh after not starting at the weekend."

On David Raya: "We haven't conceded much but we need him in those moments. Really confident, connected with the team and in great shape."

On other injuries: "[Bukayo] Saka not training yet so he won't be available and Ricci [Calafiori] felt something and could not stay on. Bit of a worry."

  13. 'What Emery has done is nothing short of a miracle'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on TNT Sports

What Unai Emery has done at Aston Villa is nothing short of a miracle. Before he came in they looked lost, but he has instilled a confidence and belief in the club. You can feel it when you come here to the stadium, there is a genuine confidence that they can welcome any team here and beat them.

On their day they can beat anybody, because they have players that can hurt people. They have a great style of play, a great structure and the players all know what they are doing.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to TNT Sports: "We are playing seriously, we are playing focused, responsible and the team is progressing and mature in everything.

"We tried to break the press man to man. We conceded some things in the first 15 minutes but then reacted very well.

"It is always difficult at home in Europe. We have had to try and be consistent in our gameplan for 90 minutes and I think we did that today."

On substituting Amadou Onana at half time: "Tactical decision but as well he had some pain. Not clear. I decided tactically and also not take a risk with him."

On his strikers and Duran's reaction to being substituted: "They are working well. The commitment to help the team with quality and trying to understand as well.

“When he watched it, and thought we were going to change him, he accelerated and scored a goal – it was fantastic.

"He was wanting more because he was thinking he could score more goals. He did very good work and the last minutes is for Watkins and keep going."

It's the Champions League. You win at home and keep a clean sheet, it's a positive result.

Arsenal would've wanted to go clearer than that 1-0 lead and whenever you miss that amount of chances, the opposition gains momentum. But David Raya and defence answered the questions and stayed really solid.

But that's gonna wear thin eventually. Arsenal fans will be thinking their team will need to step it up to keep up with Liverpool and Manchester City.

There's holes in that performance and quite a lot of questions they'll have to answer.

  17. 'That will have been frustrating for Arteta'published at 22:19 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

On what will have been frustrating for Arsenal this evening...

Missed chances, as simple as that.

That will have been frustrating for Mikel Arteta. Going into the game it was about responding from the loss against Bournemouth.

Gabriel Jesus does so many good things in the game, he works hard and his link-up play is good, but his finishing has let him down for number of seasons.

All of sudden Shakhtar Donetsk got that confidence from somewhere and they pushed Arsenal back.

Defensively we have praised them for a number of seasons, I remember having the goalkeeper debate between Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya. Raya has won that hands down. Once again he got them out of trouble.

It's a positive result and they've had a good start to the Champions League campaign.

  18. 'Emery using all his experience'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 22 October

Morgan Rogers is another piece of shrewd recruitment from Aston Villa. They've seen a player who fits the bill, the manager believes he can develop him and they've gone and got him.

There's so much talent in that Villa squad. You saw Ross Barkley and Boubacar Kamara coming on to replace Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana - the changes that Unai Emery can make is incredible.

It's really good use of the squad. Emery is a manger who has such vast experience in these European competitions and he's using all that experience to get the best out of players like Rogers.

  19. 'The manager keeps raising the bar'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans, speaking to TNT Sports: "A brilliant win tonight. A tough opponent.

"The manager is really onto us. He wants us to keep raising the bar every game.

"I always try to improve myself. We had some really good work with the manager last year. He always gives us those challenges during the game, tonight we played a team who plays man to man and he challenged us to beat that."

On Jhon Duran: "Duran has everything, he has technique, he can hold the ball and can flick on. He is an all round striker. Morgan [Rogers] is more suited into the pockets. I joke with him calling him my pocket as I need him in those areas to get to my passes."

On Duran's reaction to being substituted: "He is really funny. The manager does not care. He knows everyone wants to play. It is part of the game."

  20. 'Most important thing is to win'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 22 October

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Arsenal

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli speaking to TNT Sports:

"Most important thing is to win. We knew how tough they are and we came here to win the game and we did it. We wanted to score more but we won the game and that's the most important thing."

On Trossard penalty miss: "He could've scored but we are behind him, supporting him. We know his quality and we go again. I'm sure he's going to play well in the next game."

On goal: "It was my goal! It doesn't matter if it was mine or an own goal, the most important thing is the win and we are really happy.

"Tricky. We've lost some players but we know our qualities and that it's tough to play in the Champions League. We didn't have a good result in the last game in the Premier League and we came here to win and we did just that."

On Raya save: "We are lucky to have him here. Really happy for him to get that save."
