  3. Bielefeld's remarkable cup runpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 2 April

    Arminia Bielefeld 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen

Arminia Bielefeld, who are fourth in Germany's third division, have reached their national cup final after beating reigning Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal champions Bayer Leverkusen last night.

Bielefeld had already beaten three top-flight sides - Union Berlin, Freiburg and Werder Bremen - before their victory over Xabi Alonso's men.

They have played all those games at their own ground, thanks to a German rule that the lower league side in any cup tie plays the match at home.

Arminia are the fourth team from the third division to reach the German Cup final, following Union Berlin in 2001, Energie Cottbus in 1997 and Hertha Berlin's reserve team in 1993.

They will take on another Bundesliga side in the final, with Stuttgart or RB Leipzig facing each other in the other semi tonight.

There was more than only the Premier League last night - across Europe we saw three quite remarkable cup semi-finals. Here's the round-up:

Real Madrid kept their Treble hopes alive in extraordinary fashion after Antonio Rudiger headed home an extra-time winner against Real Sociedad to book their place in the Copa del Rey final.

Substitute Rudiger climbed highest to meet Arda Guler's 115th-minute corner to flick a header beyond visiting keeper Alex Remiro, sparking wild celebrations from the home fans.

In a terrific end-to-end second half, five goals were scored in 21 minutes as both sides looked to confirm their spot in the Seville showpiece. You can read more here.

Third-tier Arminia Bielefeld stunned defending champions Bayer Leverkusen to reach the final of the German Cup.

Bielefeld fought back from a goal down to triumph 2-1 and become the first team outside the top two divisions to knock four Bundesliga sides out of the German Cup in one season. You can find our report here.

And Paris St-Germain battled from two goals down to beat second-tier Dunkerque 4-2 and book their place in the French Cup final.

Ousmane Dembele scored twice to spare PSG blushes, after the holders had fallen two goals behind inside just 27 minutes as Vincent Sasso and Muhannad Al Saad struck for the side currently fifth in Ligue 2. Read more here.

Jorgen Strand Larsen made it three goals in two games as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat West Ham United to move further away from the relegation zone.

The Norway striker sat out the international break with a fractured hand, but returned to record a 10th Premier League strike this season.

With Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha still suspended, the 25-year-old Strand Larsen converted just inside the penalty area in the 21st minute following a mazy run from Joao Gomes, albeit with the help of a slight deflection off West Ham's former Wolves defender Max Kilman.

Hammers boss Graham Potter made three changes at half-time with Carlos Soler, Niclas Fullkrug and Edson Alvarez all introduced, and the visitors immediately offered more of an attacking threat.

But a fourth home victory of the season moved Vitor Pereira's side 12 points clear of the relegation zone, although they remain 17th in the table and five points behind West Ham.

Last night's game looked like a classic smash and grab by a team in 14th playing against the team in third. If Man Utd could hit a barn door they would have won comfortably.

Nottingham Forest have all but guaranteed a place in the Champions League next season, according to the Opta supercomputer.

Following the win against Manchester United, Opta now gives third-placed Forest an 81.8% chance of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.

The supercomputer simulations also have them finishing in the top five places at a probability of 93.3%.

As a reminder, the team finishing fifth in the league could play in the Champions League next season, with England set to get an additional spot in the competition by finishing top of Uefa's coefficient table.

    Opta's predictions for Forest:

    • 2nd - 3.9%
    • 3rd - 54.9%
    • 4th - 22.9%
    • 5th - 11%
    • 6th - 5.3%

Yates for an England shout? Yes! He'll never challenge the midfield superstars at Tuchel's disposal but if you need an absolute warrior in the middle who will leave nothing in the tank to get the result, that's got to be worth more than Jordan Henderson, no? He can take a penalty too...

Going by Tuchel’s backward-looking first squad, he’s more likely to pick Mason Mount again than call-up Yates.

  11. The bleakest Man Utd statspublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 2 April

    Nottingham Forest 1-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

    • United have 37 points after 30 games, meaning they have won 1.23 points per game this season. The Red Devils' worst points return in the Premier League era is 58 (1.57 points per game), which they achieved in 2021-22. United must win seven of their remaining eight matches to match that tally.
    • United are 13th in the table, which would comfortably be their worst finish in the Premier League. Their eighth-place finish last season under Erik ten Hag is their previous lowest.
    • United have conceded 41 in 30 games - although they shipped 58 last year.
    • United set a new low for wins in a Premier League season in 2021-22, with 16 victories. But they have won just 10 so far in 2024-25, meaning they need six wins from their last seven matches to avoid another record.
    • Ten Hag achieved another dubious honour in 2023-24 - his side lost 14 games in the Premier League, a club record. Ruben Amorim's side have already lost 13 league games in 2024-25.
    • Under Alex Ferguson, United lost 114 of 810 Premier League games. Since Ferguson retired, they have as of last night lost 114 in 448 league fixtures.

Manchester United are still to win successive Premier League games this season.

It is now looking increasingly likely they will finish no higher than 13th this season.

Just to put that into context, since the English league restarted in 1946-47, so nearly 80 years, United have only finished 13th or lower five times, one of which was when they were in what is now the Championship following relegation in 1973-74.

They last finished 13th under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1989-90 campaign that ended with an FA Cup victory that propelled them into two decades of glory.

It feels like clutching at straws to think that will happen this season but winning the Europa League is of massive importance.

It's time for Ruben Amorim to stop trying to make the current team work, to drop many of his overpaid stars, and to give his talented youngsters some game time for the rest of the season. He's going to need many more new players to rebuild this summer than Man Utd will be able to afford otherwise.

  14. Is makeshift striker Maguire sign of Man Utd struggles?published at 09:25 British Summer Time 2 April

    Alex Brotherton
    BBC Sport journalist

With Manchester United trailing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest and needing a goal to avoid a 13th defeat of the season, manager Ruben Amorim turned to the bench.

He had already withdrawn Joshua Zirkzee - scorer of three league goals since completing a £36.5m move to Old Trafford last summer - in favour of Rasmus Hojlund, who has contributed 13 league goals since United spent £72m on him in 2023.

With other attacking options scarce, Amorim took an approach familiar to coaches at all levels of the game - send on the big man.

In fairness, Harry Maguire almost came good as a makeshift striker, his bundled effort in the seventh minute of injury time beating Matz Sels but not fellow centre-back Murillo on the goalline.

Maguire registered more shots on target during his nine-minute cameo (one) than Zirkzee in 78 and Hojlund after coming on at the break - both achieved zero.

Little illustrates United's desperation better than a 32-year-old centre-back being their most threatening weapon in the opposition penalty area.

  15. 'Man Utd do not possess enough threats'published at 09:20 British Summer Time 2 April

    Martin O'Neill
Former Nottingham Forest manager and player on TNT Sports

Marcus Rashford has been allowed out - I'm surprised they allowed him to go to Aston Villa, who are competitors really. Manchester United do not possess enough threats in their team, it is simple really.

They had Patrick Dorgu tonight, and I could have done what he did - getting the ball wide on the left hand side, his job is to take players on. He has laid it inside three times in the first 10 minutes of the second half, to the opposition.

It might be they have no confidence, but this type of thing, it's all over the field at United. They have some really good players, but not enough to be a threat in this league.

Anthony Elanga came to prominence at Old Trafford under Ralf Rangnick during the 2021-22 season but his rise was curtailed at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag preferred Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho while also signing Antony from Ajax for £82m, paving way for Elanga to join Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023.

But with the Sweden winger tearing it up at Champions League-chasing Forest, let's compare how United's wingers have fared in the Premier League since Elanga's departure.

Look away if you are a United fan!

Goal contributions since Elanga signed for Forest:

    • Anthony Elanga - 28 (11 goals, 17 assists)
    • Alejandro Garnacho - 16 (11 goals, 5 assists)
    • Amad Diallo - 15 (7 goals, 8 assists)
    • Marcus Rashford - 14 (11 goals, 3 assists)
    • Antony - 2 (1 goal, 1 assist)

Anthony Elanga came back to haunt his former club last night.

The Swedish winger, who joined United as a 12-year-old but was let go by Erik ten Hag in 2021, has been in excellent form for Nuno Espirito Santo's side this season.

The 22-year-old has either scored or assisted more than a quarter of Forest's goals this season and is their second-most productive player behind Chris Wood.

He has scored six goals and created eight assists in his best scoring campaign till date.

In comparison, only captain Bruno Fernandes has a better record than Elanga at United this season, with eight goals and 10 assists.

Injured Amad Diallo has six goals and seven assists in 2024-25 while Alejandro Garnacho has only registered four goals and an assist this season - the same as Marcus Rashford before he left on loan to Aston Villa.

As a parent of a young footballer you’d be mad to recommend playing for them. And it’s not just pressure on the young players, the established stars also feel this. Take Harry Maguire, his subsequent performances and the stick that follows is relentless.

  19. Why did Elanga leave Man Utd?published at 09:05 British Summer Time 2 April

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Ralf Rangnick, arriving at Old Trafford to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December 2021, quickly concluded Anthony Elanga had a bright future.

Rangnick clearly knew Elanga had pace - and felt his direct style was a threat to opposition defences, which in turn could create space for others.

Crucially, he also felt Elanga was aware of the space around him and didn't forget his defensive duties, even if his preference was to go forward.

That he featured in 26 out of Rangnick's 29 games in charge says it all about the current Austria coach's view.

Sadly for Elanga, Erik ten Hag had a different outlook. The Dutchman did not feel Elanga had the quality needed to be enough of an influence on his squad. That meant he was jettisoned in 2023 after a single campaign under the Dutchman.

The problem was the attacking players who came in the same summer – Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund – have failed to deliver. The wide attacking players United already had – Antony, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho – were inconsistent at best, Anthony Martial was injured and Marcus Rashford's form fell off a cliff.

Ten Hag's assessment was probably right. United were third then, as Forest are third now. Maybe that is Elanga's level. What he really did not bargain for was the Old Trafford side hurtling backwards at such an alarming rate. Third to them now seems light years away.
