    Premier Sports Cup, quarter-finals

So a long weekend of League Cup action comes to an end and we now know who will be in the quarter-finals on 21-22 September.

Spartans and Falkirk both ousted Premiership opposition only to be "rewarded" with tough away games against two of the biggest clubs in the country. Ah well, at least there is the TV and gate money - and the belief that "you never know in cup football".

Here's a reminder again of the draw:

    • Aberdeen v The Spartans
    • Celtic v Falkirk
    • Motherwell v Dundee United
    • Rangers v Dundee
  3. 'It isn't good enough' - Hibs' Graypublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Celtic 3-1 Hibernian

Hibs head coach David Gray is "very frustrated" after his side repeated the mistakes of last weekend's league defeat by Celtic in the League Cup.

"We found ourselves very quickly in the same movie again, which is extremely frustrating," he tells BBC Scotland.

"All the things I touched on during the week about being more aggressive, being braver - not just on the ball but in everything you do.

"For the first two minutes of the game, we were front-footed but individual errors have cost us again. We fell back into being passive.

"There have to be changes, because right now it isn't good enough."

  4. Rodgers relishing meeting with McGlynnpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Celtic 3-1 Hibernian

Brendan Rodgers expects a hard game in the League Cup quarter-final against a Falkirk side managed by one of his former coaches.

"We're very happy for a number of reasons," the Celtic manager says. "One, it's a home draw. And two, I get to see my good friend John McGlynn.

"He's an amazing guy who was a staff member for me when I was here the first time. It'll be great to see him again and take on one of his teams.

"We'll be ready for a difficult game."

  5. Rodgers pleased with 'speed and tempo'published at 17:45 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Celtic 3-1 Hibernian

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers on Sportsound: "I thought we were excellent from the start of the game. We showed our hunger.

"We said before the game that our playmaker today would be our counter pressing. It was there and we were winning so many second balls.

"Our only real danger was from throw-ins. They've got guys on either side who can throw it in and add a little bit of pressure and make you fret a little bit.

"We dealt well with that and their header was a great header. We don't have any complaints. We could maybe have shifted our wall back a bit, but we'll learn from that.

"But, overall, the speed and tempo in the game and the quality in the attacking moments was fantastic."

  6. Hibs won't 'feel sorry for ourselves'published at 17:44 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Celtic 3-1 Hibernian

Hibs head coach David Gray tells BBC Scotland: "There’s no time for us to feel sorry for ourselves."

More to come from him shortly...

    Premier Sports Cup, last 16

Those quarter-final ties will be played over the weekend of 21-22 September.

Announcement of the exact kick-off times will obviously have to wait until TV coverage is decided.

Kilmarnock are considering requesting a postponement to their Premiership match against Aberdeen on Sunday to aid their bid to qualify for the Conference League.

The Ayrshire side travel to face FC Copenhagen in Denmark on Thursday night in the play-off round before the return leg at Rugby Park a week later.

A trip to Pittodrie is sandwiched in between and Killie believe, with millions of pounds riding on European qualification, a postponement would benefit the club and Scottish football and are planning to make their case to the Scottish Professional Football League.

  10. Crumbs of comfort for Hibspublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Celtic 3-1 Hibernian

Hibs will hold on to that fine goal from Mykola Kuharevich against Celtic, as well as the fact that they showed decent composure and determination to stay in the game when the hosts threatened to blow them away in the first half.

The worry for Hibs is that softness at the back - and the fact they've conceded another three goals. Not giving the country's champions a two-goal start in consecutive matches would be a good start.

They'll be glad to see the back of Celtic and have some winnable matches coming up as David Gray seeks his first point in the Premiership this season.

  11. Tough for the minnowspublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 18 August

    Premier Sports Cup, quarter-final draw

A bit harsh on the wee clubs there, with Championship side Falkirk and League 2's Spartans both handed tough games away from home.

Holders Rangers will be happy to have a home draw, as will favourites and league champions Celtic.

Motherwell against Dundee United is the most likely to be the one that is hardest to call.

Celtic will look at this as a thoroughly good day's work. Safely through to the League Cup quarter-finals with the minimum of fuss.

The platform for this victory was set in the first quarter of an hour, by which time stand-in striker Daizen Maeda had already bagged a double.

Another goal followed, albeit gift-wrapped by Hibs, allowing the league champions to relax for the latter part of the match.

They'll be disappointed by the concession of the goal, but you could just as easily attribute that to the quality of Martin Boyle's delivery and the headed finish by Mykola Kuharevich.

Another comfortable win, another match in which they've found it easy to score goals and create chances, even without their star striker, Kyogo Furuhashi. A promising season lies ahead on this early evidence.

  17. McInnes 'couldn't have been more proud'published at 17:06 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Motherwell 1-0 Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes tells BBC Scotland: "That was so tough on each and every one of us.

"There wasn't a lot in the first half. We tried to get more penetration, because, for all the possession we had, we didn't work the goalkeeper enough.

"It was always my intention to make three or four changes at 55 minutes or so, but when Stuart [Findlay] got sent off, it was all hands to the pump.

"It was such a gutsy performance. I love managing this group of boys because, when more was needed, they gave it. We still carried a fight, we didn't accept what was happening. I couldn't have been more proud of them."

  18. We deserved win - Kettlewellpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 18 August

    FT: Motherwell 1-0 Kilmarnock

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell tells BBC Scotland: "We're deserving of it. We were okay when it was 11 versus 11 without setting the heather alight. We were reasonably confident.

"They gave up a bit of pressure [after the red card], invite us into crossing positions, the final third. We could have done better with capitalising on that.

"We score and we seem to step backwards. Kilmarnock stepped forward and full credit to them. They made a real fist of the cup tie.

"We know we can get better and we'll need to be better. We've had a lot of issues with injuries, but we had to get into the next round of the cup and we did that."

  19. 'We didn't take our chances' - Robinsonpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 18 August

FT: Dundee United 1-0 St Mirren

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "We had four great chances from set-plays. They took theirs, we didn't.

"I don't think either side created a whole lot. There wasn't a lot of chances in the game. We didn't create anything from open play.

"We just lacked a bit of a spark. There's only six players who were there giving everything and it's the same six players that I'm constantly trying to drag minutes out of. It's hard to be critical of them."

  20. United 'well worthy' of progressionpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 18 August

FT: Dundee United 1-0 St Mirren

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin tells BBC Scotland: "We were well worthy of the win in the end. St Mirren came fast out of the blocks.

"Over the piece, we controlled large periods within the first half. Deservedly got ourselves in front. We wanted that second goal to kill the game off.

"As much as we didn't have similar control in the second half, we managed the game really well. It's a massive clean sheet as well."
