There's a reason people say the Championship is the most unpredictable league on earth, and we saw it tonight.

The three teams relegated from the Premier League last season combined to take one point from their three games tonight.

Luton couldn't have done much more, certainly in terms of endeavour, against Sunderland, but this is a different Sunderland from the one which the Hatters beat in the sunshine of May 2023 on their march through the play-offs towards promotion.

This Sunderland soaked up lots of pressure and then struck a couple of devastating counter-punches. It really was like an old-school boxing bout.

Burnley failed to keep pace with the Black Cats after being held at Hull while Sheffield United and West Brom lost ground with a defeat at Middlesbrough and a draw at Blackburn respectively.

At the other end Plymouth will be desperate to get back to Home Park on Saturday after back-to-back defeats on their travels saw them slide closer to the drop-zone.

We'll be back on Friday night for the mouthwatering prospect of Portsmouth v Sheffield Wednesday in another huge battle towards the bottom.

Thanks for your company this evening. We'll see you then!

Sunderland fans, is this the season you make a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017?

Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

One of our featured games tonight was Millwall's 1-0 win over Plymouth.

The Londoners started the evening in 21st place and now they don't even feature in the bottom 10 of the Championship - crazy isn't it?

That victory lifts Neil Harris's side up to 13th but only four points clear of the drop zone.

Plymouth move down one place with Luton's home defeat by Sunderland also seeing them move closer to the dreaded dotted line.

Fittingly Emmanuel Latte Lath's superb diving header (seriously, google Keith Houchen) from Finn Azaz's sumptuous cross wins it for Boro.

What a precious three points for Michael Carrick after Saturday's dismal defeat by Bristol City, getting one over on his predecessor Chris Wilder into the bargain - that's one way to celebrate his two-year anniversary in the job tomorrow.

That's eight games unbeaten at home and seven wins in 10 overall for Boro in this fixture, which keeps them right in touch with the play-off pack, and actually within two points of the Blades, who have now lost two straight after their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Jamie Shackleton has a glimpse of goal in the final seconds but can only fire straight at Seny Dieng in the Boro goal.

    Luton 1-2 Sunderland

    Simon Oxley

Luton were trying to get an equalizer by launching the ball up field. They were not playing through the thirds.

Luton did not deserve to lose but they have got to stop conceding these silly goals.

  9. 'What a result for Sunderland'published at 21:48 British Summer Time 23 October

    Luton 1-2 Sunderland

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

What a result that is for Sunderland.

That is the best game Sunderland have played all season, they have put their bodies on the line and shown quality with the two goals scored.

Ben Doak has been denied a Boro second by Michael Cooper while Gus Hamer couldn't beat Seny Dieng at the other end.

Zian Flemming celebrates scoringImage source, Getty Images

Zian Flemming salvages a point for Burnley with his first goal for the club 13 minutes from the end.

That's after Hull City had impressed for the majority of the game and deservedly led at the break through Xavier Simons as he latched onto an Abu Kamara pass to fire a deflected effort past James Trafford.

Burnley can have few arguments about being behind with Trafford also denying Mohamed Belloumi as the visitors failed to threaten the home side.

It wasn't until Scott Parker made changes deep into the second-half that Burnley started to look like the side who went top at the weekend.

Jaidon Anthony eventually supplied a clear opportunity, hanging-up a cross to the far post which Flemming headed home.

It might have got even better for Burnley deep into the three minutes added on but Anthony failed to keep calm with the goal at his mercy and scuffed an effort which was scrambled away.

What a game of Championship football.

After negotiating eight nervous added minutes with the Luton keeper up for a last-gasp corner, Sunderland extend their lead at the top of the table after a hard-fought win at Luton. The hosts are furious as they think they deserved a penalty in the final few seconds and there are heated scenes after the whistle.

The visitors withstood so much pressure before the break, and saw Carlton Morris denied an opener by an iffy offside flag in added time, however they held their nerve and Chris Rigg capitalised on a bit of luck to tuck them ahead, and then even after Elijah Adebyao nodded his first goal of the season, it took just three minutes for Romaine Mundle to win it with a wonderful strike from outside the box.

Regis Le Bris does it again.

  13. Postpublished at 21:43 British Summer Time 23 October

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Sheff Utd

The Blades are trying to claw their way back into it but Rhian Brewster's dangerous low cross from the left is somehow diverted over the bar by a Middlesbrough defender when it looked for all the world they'd only be able to burst the net.

Down the other end and Aidan Morris has whipped a first-time effort from the edge of the box inches over the angle of Michael Cooper's post and bar.

The final 10 minutes or so should be box office.

    Hull City 1-1 Burnley

    WHAT A CHANCE FOR BURNLEY!

It's all hands to the pump on the Hull City line but Jaidon Anthony wastes the chance and he sinks to his knees as the final whistle goes just seconds later.

    Millwall 1-0 Plymouth

Romain Esse celebrates goalImage source, Getty Images

Millwall end a three match winless streak thanks to Romain Esse's first-half goal.

The forward started and finished the move as he slotted past Daniel Grimshaw in the Plymouth goal after 13 minutes.

It could have been better for the home side with Femi Azeez, Jake Cooper and Ryan Leonard all coming close.

The visiting hoards from Devon will be disappointed with their side's contribution and Ryan Hardie wasted their best chance with a header straight at Lukas Jensen and the home goalkeeper also saved Morgan Whittaker's second-half free-kick.

It's now just one point on the road from six games for Plymouth while Millwall buy themselves a bit of breathing space at the bottom.

  16. Postpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 23 October

    Hull City 1-1 Burnley

It's a bit nervy from Hull City and they have to block Josh Laurent's shot wide for a corner but they get it clear.

Well. It won't live long in the memory, in truth, but both sides will consider this a point earned in their respective promotion pushes.

The huffed and puffed but neither side could find a clear cut chance to win it, with Alex Palmer and Aynsley Pears standing firm at either end.

It does mean Blackburn's five-match winning streak at Ewood Park is over, though their clean sheet streak live son, though it's now five games without a win for the Baggies for the first time under Carlos Corberan.

GOAL Middlesbrough 1-0 Sheff Utdpublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 23 October

    Emmanuel Latte Lath (80 mins)

    The breakthrough....

Substitute Emmanuel Latte Lath was dropped to the bench after missing a glut of chances on Saturday but he has taken this one with aplomb for his first goal from open play this season.

Finn Azaz clips a glorious pass in behind the Blades defence and Latte Lath dives forward to send a bullet diving header, Houchen-style, into the bottom corner of Michael Cooper's goal.

  20. Equaliser from a set-piece?published at 21:33 British Summer Time 23 October

    Luton 1-2 Sunderland

    Simon Oxley
Luton commentator on BBC Three Counties Radio

You would expect an equaliser to come from a set piece if it's going to come.

That's where Luton have been dangerous from tonight.
