Ryan Hardie attempted to give boss Wayne Rooney the perfect start to league life at home at Plymouth.

He went for goal from distance, but his effort was well held by Tigers goalkeeper ivor Pandur.

The hosts are, of course, looking to ounce back from their heavy opening Championship defeat by Sheffield Wednesday last week.

    Final Score

The sun is beating down at Vicarage Road which is the perfect metaphor for both Watford and Stoke City's starts to the season, as they both come into this one with wins on the opening day and in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Excitement and optimism in both the home and away end... but will that be the case by five o'clock?

  7. Is Bristol City ideal venue for Lions to bounce back?published at 14:59 British Summer Time 17 August

Bristol City v Millwall (15:00 BST)

Looking for a pick-me-up after a late opening day defeat on home soil? If you’re Millwall, you’ve certainly come to the right place today.

The Lions looked set to rescue a point against Watford after Duncan Watmore’s double recovered a 2-0 deficit, only for Mileta Rajovic to head the Hornets’ last-minute winner.

But Ashton Gate, where the Londoners take on Bristol City this afternoon, has been one of their happiest hunting grounds in recent years – with four wins in five visits, including Shaun Hutchinson’s injury-time winner last time out on New Year’s Day.

Liam Manning’s side were also on the wrong end of a late goal in their first game, when Hull’s Oscar Estupinan converted a 91st-minute penalty to cancel out a debut strike by summer signing Fally Mayulu.

City will hope Mayulu’s goal is the first of many after last year’s top scorer Tommy Conway completed a protracted move to Middlesbrough, but they also strengthened the squad on Friday with midfield playmaker Scott Twine returning from Burnley on a permanent deal.

  8. Rooney looks for first league win at Plymouth bosspublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 17 August

    Plymouth v Hull (15:00 BST)

Wayne Rooney oversaw his first win as Plymouth Argyle boss in theCarabao Cup in mid-week, and now he is after his first league points as the Pilgrims boss.

Rooney, the prolific former Manchester United and England striker, was left furious after their 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the Championship season.

It was a defeat that planted Plymouth bottom of the table and Rooney demanding immediate improvements of his side.

And after beating Cheltenham 3-0 in the League Cup at home, Rooney will want more of the same against a Hull City side that snatched an opening-day draw against Bristol City a week ago.

Blackpool have not been defeated at Bloomfield Road for 12 games in League One but their opponents Stockport will be hoping to end that run, having lost only one of their last eight away games in the league.

Meanwhile Birmingham City are unbeaten in their last five opening away games and will be looking for a record sixth against Wycombe.

    • Blackpool v Stockport
    • Cambridge United v Crawley
    • Huddersfield v Stevenage
    • Lincoln v Barnsley
    • Mansfield v Burton
    • Northampton v Exeter

  10. Can Stoke be smart against Cleverley's Watford?published at 14:53 British Summer Time 17 August

Watford v Stoke City (15:00 BST)

Watford head coach Tom CleverleyImage source, Rex Features

It’s so far, so good for Watford at Vicarage Road since Tom Cleverley took charge – they are protecting an unbeaten home record under the ex-Hornets midfielder’s guidance as they take on Stoke City.

Cleverley, who took over from Valerien Ismael in March, has overseen four home league games without defeat, but it was a win on the road that launched his side’s campaign last weekend, a 3-2 triumph over Millwall at the Den.

Stoke, who completed their seventh signing of the summer when they sealed a loan deal for Brighton midfielder Andrew Moran on Friday, also have three points safely in the bag after a 1-0 victory against Coventry on the opening day.

However, the Potters’ recent record against Watford is a modest one – they have beaten their opponents only once in the last seven Championship meetings and their last win in Hertfordshire came during Marco Silva’s reign in 2017.

  11. Revamped Blades seek rare home win as they host Rangerspublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 17 August

Sheffield Utd v QPR (15:00 BST)

Sheffield United's Gustavo Hamer (C)Image source, Rex Features

It’s fair to say the winning habit deserted Sheffield United last season – they managed just three victories during a wretched Premier League stint that ended in immediate descent back to the second tier.

In fact, the Blades’ most recent success at Bramall Lane came eight months ago – a 1-0 win over Brentford, whose west London neighbours Queens Park Rangers visit South Yorkshire today.

United, who triumphed 2-0 at Preston in their opening game last weekend, have overhauled their squad since relegation, with winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi the latest to join on a season-long loan from Crystal Palace on Friday.

Rangers were victorious on their last visit to Bramall Lane in October 2022, when Chris Willock netted the only goal – but have never yet recorded consecutive away wins against the Blades.

But Marti Cifuentes’ side finished last season strongly as they hauled themselves clear of the bottom three and will be anxious to respond to their opening-day 3-1 defeat at the hands of West Brom.

  12. Managerless Preston visit threadbare Swanseapublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 17 August

    Swansea v Preston (15:00 BST)

    Dafydd Pritchard

A soggy Swansea is the setting for Preston’s first Championship game since the departure of manager Ryan Lowe after just one match of the season.

Former Swans assistant coach Mike Marsh oversaw an EFL Cup win over Sunderland on Tuesday, with ex-Wales striker Ched Evans part of his staff.

Today, Preston take on a Swansea side who started the season with defeat at Middlesbrough a week ago.

Following a difficult summer in which 13 players left and only four came in, the Welsh club are in desperate need of reinforcements before the transfer window shuts.

  13. League Two fixturespublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 17 August

    All 15:00 BST kick-offs

Bromley are sitting pretty at the top of the League Two table with a 100% win record through two games.

Six other teams have the chance to join them if they claim three points this afternoon.

On paper, it looks like a bit of a one sided fixture list with teams at opposite ends of the table facing off.

But this is early doors, the season has only just begun.

    • Accrington v Harrogate
    • Bradford v Salford City
    • Colchester v MK Dons
    • Crewe Alexandra v Chesterfield
    • Grimsby v Cheltenham
    • Morecambe v Gillingham
    • Newport v Doncaster
    • Port Vale v Tranmere Rovers
    • Swindon v Walsall
  14. Burnley look to build on stunning openerpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 17 August

    Burnley v Cardiff (15:00 BST)

Burnley returned to the Championship in somewhat scorching fashion on Monday, as they thrashed Luton Town who were relegated from the Premier League alongside the Clarets last term.

Scott Parker’s side certainly started the week by turning heads with that result, and they have since had heads spinning a little with one of the more interesting bits of summer transfer activity.

They appear to be on the cusp of signing Joao Mendes, the son of the great Brazilian Ronaldinho. He was at Barcelona last season, but was released earlier in the summer and could end up at Turf Moor next.

Meanwhile, Cardiff City are on the road for the first time this season after losing their Championship opener against Sunderland before overcoming League One side Bristol Rovers in the Carabao Cup in mid-week.

As far as happy hunting grounds go, Turf Moor is far from that for the Bluebirds who have not won there since 1988.

New ownership, new manager, recent change in sporting director.

Norwich City certainly are a team in transition and early league and cup results would back that up.

Add to that starlet Jonathan Rowe’s abscence from the first team as transfer talk turns his head, and it’s all a bit bumpy in these flatlands of East Anglia.

It’s a different tale for their opponents today, who have been scoring for fun and have their first three points in the bag.

Although Norwich’s arch rivals, Ipswich, may have done them a favour by taking Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn yesterday.

So, we’re about to see how Rovers do in a post-Szmodics world.

  17. 'Bromley took their chances'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Bromley 2-0 AFC Wimbledon

    Chris Peddy
    BBC Sport at Hayes Lane

Bromley win their first home game in the EFL to maintain their 100% start to the League Two season.

Goals from Michael Cheek and Corey Whitely either side of half-time secure a well-earned win for the Ravens.

Wimbledon dominated the ball with 62% possession but it was the home side who took their chances to win the three points.

  18. League One and Two early resultspublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 17 August

The last push from Charlton paid off in League One as midfielder Luke Berry found the bottom-left corner to get his team a late 1-0 win against a deflated Leyton Orient.

Meanwhile Peterborough's quick equaliser in the first half provided the backbone for a goal-fest in the second. Joel Randall made it three only to get himself a sneaky tap-in just one minute later and join Kwame Poku with a brace as they defeatedShrewsbury Town 4-1.

In League Two, Bromley goalkeeper Grant Smith made a double save to give the home fans the perfect introduction to the EFL after Michael Cheek and Corey Whitely secured a 2-0 victory against AFC Wimbledon.

Carlisle won the Cumbrian derby 1-0 against Barrow after visiting forward Andy Dallas' equaliser is ruled offside in the dying minutes of added time.

Thankfully it has now been brought to an end.

  20. FULL-TIMEpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 17 August

    Portsmouth 0-0 Luton Town

After a much quieter second half the points are shared at Fratton Park.

Luton Town going down to ten men in the first half one of the main talking points, Thomas Kaminski seeing a red card after a second booking.

The Hatters did well to keep a clean sheet after playing with ten men for around an hour.

Two draws to start the Championship season for Portsmouth, Luton Town get their first point of the season.
