  9. 'Penalty was the turning point'published at 14:54 British Summer Time 14 September

    FT: Southampton 0-3 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The start was not easy. I think the penalty was the turning point in the game and not so far after we scored and that was very important. From that moment on, the game was all ours."

On how Matthijs de Ligt has done: "I'm not surprised. At this moment he is not fit, he's not at 100% speed. He needs the games to go up to it. We see glimpses now and once he's there he will do much better. We are happy with him and especially today with his game."

On what Marcus Rashford's goal will do for his confidence: "It's very important. For every striker, they want to be on the scoring list. Once the first is in, more is coming. Once a striker was talking about a ketchup bottle, once it's going, it's coming more."

On Manuel Ugarte: "He didn't work with the team, it was two sessions, one before the break and yesterday. He was the only one later into the team training so only yesterday he had 20 minutes training with the team. We were happy we could bring him today and show what he could deliver to our team."

  10. 'You have to find a way to win'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 14 September

    FT: Southampton 0-3 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports: "We have to win every game and we did today.

"Sometimes you have to find a way to win. First minutes of the game we had some problems but after Andre [Onana] stopped the penalty and the goal by Matthjis de Light, the game was all ours."

On Marcus Rashford's goal: "It's very important. We spoke before the game and it is so huge for him, for every striker, when the season starts you want to be on the scoring list. Now he has his first, I'm sure more will come.

"We had the chances to kill the game off, we had the chances, I don't know how many. We had several to go to 3 or 4-0."

On injuries: "We had internationals early in the season, some are short in the pre-season, some come from intercontinental flights then when you have a 12:30 kick-off, you can struggle. Hopefully it's nothing serious and we have to assess today and tomorrow."

  11. 'City should win this comfortably'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 14 September

Man City v Brentford (15:00 BST)

    .

Brentford have been a bogey team for Manchester City in the past and Bees boss Thomas Frank knows how to beat them, that's for sure - he did the double over them in 2022-23.

That's not going to happen this time, though. I refuse to put Erling Haaland in my Fantasy team on principle, because the whole nation has picked him, but he is just unstoppable at the moment and City should win this one comfortably.

City don't usually hit their stride so early in a season. If this is them just warming up, then god help the rest of the Premier League.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-1

  12. Lethal Haalandpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 14 September

I suspect Brentford boss Thomas Frank didn't think it was likely Erling Haaland would miss today's game.

The Manchester City forward announced on Wednesday that close family friendl Ivar Eggja had died and Pep Guardiola had said he would be willing to let the Norwegian miss today's game if he didn't feel up to it.

My guess is Haaland feels the best way to honour Eggia would be by scoring today.

He comes into the contest after successive hat-tricks. Scoring three in a row has only been done eight times in English football history.

  13. 'Palace's wait for a win will end'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 14 September

Crystal Palace v Leicester (15:00 BST)

    .

Crystal Palace have made a slow start to the season and in fact I'd even call it disappointing, but their wait for a first win of the new campaign won't go on much longer.

They should be a little bit too streetwise for Leicester, and I am finding it difficult to back the Foxes at the moment - it looks to me like they have got a long battle ahead of them to stay up.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  14. Baroness Brady in attendance at Craven Cottagepublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 14 September

Baroness Karren Brady has arrived at a sun drenched Craven Cottage – sunglasses at the ready – for the first of two London derbies this weekend.

Plenty of business dealings for her club, West Ham, this summer; a net spend of £85 million. I’m not sure which is more tense; The Apprentice boardroom or the build up to a derby day!?

There’s real excitement here amongst the Crystal Palace fans about seeing Eddie Nketiah’s debut. A goal for the local boy, signed from Arsenal, is what the home supporters are all hoping for today.

Meanwhile the Leicester City fans seem disappointed that their boss Steve Cooper has again chosen what looks like a more defensive midfield.

Many were hoping Facundo Buonanotte or Bilal el Khannouss would’ve been given a chance to start in a number 10 role. Let’s see if Cooper’s proved right or wrong.

  16. 'There was some pressure but we played very well'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 14 September

    FT: Southampton 0-3 Man Utd

    Manchester United

    Matthijs de LigtImage source, Reuters

Manchester United scorer Matthijs de Ligt, speaking to TNT Sports: "The win was obviously really important. I think if you get three points from three games it's not enough so there was some pressure but I think today we played very well. A big credit to Andre Onana who saved a really important penalty, he changed the game for us."

On scoring from the set piece: "We've been working on some set pieces, this one was not exactly out of the book but this was from a good spot."

On his celebration: "It's my wife's birthday so this one is for her!"

On having a point to prove after a tough international break: "Not exactly a point to prove, sometimes it doesn't go as well as you want but you have to look at the positive side. I was happy I played one and a half, it's a long time since I played games. This is my third game in a week. For me it's important to get rhythm and I can show a little more what I can do."

On how he's found Manchester United so far: "I am enjoying it a lot. We have a great group, amazing guys. A lot of young guys who have to grow and want to grow. Hopefully we can get more results like this and grow as a team."

On his fitness after going off: "I'm fine, I just had a little cramp in the last four minutes. It's the first time in probably five months that I've played three in a row. I wanted to play until the end."

  17. 'Slot will win again'published at 14:40 British Summer Time 14 September

Liverpool v Nottm Forest (15:00 BST)

    .

I am at Anfield for Radio 5 Live and I am looking forward to seeing Arne Slot's Liverpool.

They have not conceded a goal yet, and don't give away many chances, but they still look good going forward and absolutely tore Manchester United apart at Old Trafford.

Chris Wood is in good form for Nottingham Forest but I just don't see them scoring. Their plan will probably just be to sit in and try to keep Liverpool out, but I don't think that will work either - Mohamed Salah will score, and Slot will win again.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

    Anfield

A nice day for football at Anfield. Bringing my coat seems a bit of a mistake in hindsight.

It’s my first time working at Anfield since 2004 when I was on the food and drink stand in the concourse here while I was at university in Liverpool. I lasted one shift.

Hopefully I’ll break fewer hot dogs today.
