Good result for Palace, showed the Premier League class we should have after 10+ seasons but we need to strengthen in January, absolutely toothless when Eze went off and looks very vulnerable in the last 10. There are three worst teams but the supporters deserve better.

  2. Match stats from Portman Roadpublished at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December

FT: Ipswich Town 0-1 Crystal Palace

    • Ipswich Town have failed to win any of their first seven home games of a top-flight season for the first time ever, and for just the fourth time overall in any division (also 2009-10, 2012-13 and 2018-19 in the Championship).
    • Since their return to the Premier League in 2013-14, Crystal Palace have failed to score in the first half in 286 games, 39 times more than any other side in the competition in that time.
    • Kieran McKenna is only the seventh manager in Premier League history to fail to win any of his opening seven home matches in the competition and is the first to do so since Vincent Kompany with Burnley last season.
    • Since Oliver Glasner's first game in charge of Crystal Palace (24-02-2024), only Erling Haaland (17) and Yoane Wissa (16) have scored more non penalty goals in the Premier League than Jean-Philippe Mateta (15).

    Leicester City

Leicester captain Jamie Vardy speaking to Amazon Prime: "As a striker you always want to score, it's what we're there to do. I'm over the moon the get on the scoresheet.

"We've had one full day together. You could see some stuff worked and some was rusty. We've got more time for the manager to get his things across.

"We know what quality he [Bilal El Khannouss] has. He does it every day in training. Hopefully, it's the first of many. We kick on now.

On fans: "It's great, we can hear them all signing but like I said, it's just the start. We need to knuckle down now."

Three goals, a win, the perfect start for Ruud van Nistelrooy. It means the supporters will have that trust and belief in the new manager and that is so important.

You can do all the talking you want but if the players actually believe him and follow what he is saying then it can be very powerful. The best way to get belief is by winning football matches.

As per the game stats, West Ham battered Leicester with 31 shots and 10 on target but only scoring one, including nine corners and 61% possession. It's not the managers fault if the team does not win the game with such dominance.

    Leicester City

Leicester goalscorer Bilal El Khannouss speaking to Amazon Prime: "We are very happy with the new manager, he arrived two days ago, and there's a new dynamic in the group.

"When you're playing in the Premier League, I fulfilled my dream of scoring. It's only the beginning of a long story.

"We put them under pressure and we're very happy. It's only the start and we do it again the next day."

Battered may be a stretch. Leicester did get much better after half-time.

But, in the first half anyway, West Ham should have had this game wrapped up.

The Hammers had 20 shots without scoring in the first half of this match.

Interestingly, it’s the third time on record (since 2003-04) a team has had 20 first-half shots without a goal in the Premier League, with all of them coming against Leicester (Liverpool in December 2015, Crystal Palace in April 2023, West Ham tonight).

What a result this is for Ruud van Nistelrooy. We were talking about a Leicester team devoid of confidence and ideas before the game, but he's got a performance out of that group tonight.

You question why we have not seen something like that from them before. Call it the new manager bounce, new regime or whatever you like.

But there's something there for Van Nistelrooy to work on and what he's seen tonight would have given him a lot of delight.

He's made some big changes. His in-game substitutions and management looks good. It's good signs for Leicester.

Questions will be asked of Julen Lopetegui again. West Ham's performance has been good. But they conceded five against Arsenal and three tonight. The pressure is going to mount on Lopetegui.

  15. 'We're not going to lose belief any time soon'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December

    FT: Ipswich 0-1 Crystal Palace

    Ipswich Town

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Some similarities to the weekend. Nothing in the first half, it was a really cagey game. Both teams cancelling each other out and defending well. We started the second half really well, looked like we were going to grow into the game, we knew we had some good impact off the bench. Then we've gave away a poor goal from our point of view. That really decides the game."

On Ipswich's defensive performance: "We felt pretty solid. We wanted to create more energy and intensity, create more pressure around their goal. It's difficult, to be fair the back five they've settled with is really strong. Newcastle found it difficult to find penetration through them at the weekend as well. So we didn't create much as what we would like but at the same time we were solid, and no lack of effort. We just didn't manage to open them up."

On Crystal Palace's goal: "It was a poor goal. We didn't knock the ball down well enough, it was on the edge of their box and then they counter-attack and we don't get our organisation right. It is really good play from [Jean-Philippe] Mateta but it came from nothing.

"We can do better than we did tonight. I don't think that performance was on the level of some of our home performances. We didn't hit our best level tonight. We need to get back to that. Then we give ourselves a better chance to win the game."

On facing Bournemouth on Sunday: "Every one is so important. After that we've got Wolves away and then Newcastle at home before Christmas. We have to make the most of each one. That's an opportunity missed tonight to get some points but we have got to try and do it again on Sunday. There's a lot of games left and we are not going to lose belief any time soon."
