Andrew Neill: Do you expect any big moves in the January transfer window for Premier League teams?

Good question, Andrew. I think Manchester City will be active to refresh their squad with players absent, particularly Rodri, but again it is not easy to get the quality of player they require in January. Clubs are very reluctant to let their best go this month.

They have been linked with Ederson of Atalanta, but they will want big money for the midfield player and are still very much involved in the Champions League.

City have also been touted as a potential destination for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush, who has scored 18 goals in 24 games.

Arsenal will surely be looking for a prolific striker, but again that is a pursuit that may have to wait until the summer.

I think we'll move on from the Trent Alexander-Arnold chat now, and focus a little bit on Manchester City.

Against the low block Trent’s undoubted quality going forward is blunted. Add to this Konate was out on his feet on his return, offering little cover. Salah doesn’t track back as he used to and Utd had their best players down the left. No wonder it was a bad day at the office for Trent!

Conor Bradley vies with Manchester United's Alejandro GarnachoImage source, Getty Images

Scott Doverty: Hi Phil, after watching Trent Alexander-Arnold for 85 mins and Conor Bradley for 10 mins, the latter is clearly a superior defender. While he doesn't possess TAA's foot, he defends well in the tackle, works his socks off, forays forward and gets back. Conor to start against Nottingham Forest after Spurs and Accrington Stanley minutes?

Conor Bradley is definitely a better defender but Liverpool have clearly believed, up to now, that Trent Alexander-Arnold is the more complete package.

What will be of comfort to Liverpool and their fans will be that if Alexander-Arnold does leave, they have a ready-made and outstanding replacement ready to roll off the line in Conor Bradley.

From a Liverpool perspective I’m happy with letting Trent go to Madrid, the majority of games we’ve not got a result is when teams attack Trent down their left and we now have enough top attackers that we don’t need Trent’s attacking abilities as much and can balance the team with a right back that can defend better.

I think it's the right thing for Marcus Rashford to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window and get his career back on track.

He is still a young man and a very talented footballer. Even from an England point of view, it will be nice to see him back scoring goals and be happy again.

Deeba Ashraf: Which player has been the biggest surprise in the Premier League this season and why?

I would say Chris Wood at Nottingham Forest. He has taken his game to a completely new level under Nuno Espirito Santo and looks a top-class striker and finisher, with 11 Premier League goals already.

Great news for Nottingham Forest as he has been central to their wonderful season.

  11. Who could Man Utd sell in January?published at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

With Amorim looking to bring in new faces if possible this month and United's Profit and Sustainability position regarded as "tight", it is those on the fringes the club would be keenest to move.

Marcus Rashford's situation has been well documented and sources at Napoli have played down their reported interest.

Rashford was not involved at Anfield, while another of United's high earners, Casemiro, remained on the bench throughout.

As with Rashford, United officials realise Casemiro's £375,000-a-week salary vastly reduces the number of options for the Brazilian, who still has 18 months left on his contract, with the Saudi Pro-League regarded as the most viable option.

Fellow countryman Antony – the second most expensive signing in the club's history - is another close to the top of a list of players United would off-load if the finances make sense, with loan moves not ruled out.

  12. Amad contract should be completed this weekpublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United are expecting to confirm Amad Diallo's new long-term contract later this week.

On Friday, manager Ruben Amorim said an announcement was "near" and Amad's value to the club has only increased following his late equaliser at Liverpool on Sunday.

The 22-year-old has been one of the major beneficiaries of Ruben Amorim's arrival as Erik ten Hag's replacement, featuring in all 12 games as either a wing-back or in one of the two attacking roles behind the main striker.

Amorim did say early in his time at Old Trafford it would become apparent which players he viewed as key to his United revolution.

Trent was below par but doesn't deserve the pile on he's getting. I would imagine his head is in a fuzz, he is human after all and I dare say that in the same circumstances we'd be the same. Imagine you're trying to decide between boyhood dream and another of the worlds biggest clubs! Also Dalot and Bruno were good.

Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool runs with the ballImage source, Getty Images

Nick, Braughing: Trent Alexander-Arnold is SO talented going forward, but often criticised and, dare I say, a bit of a liability at the back. Why then is there a determination to keep playing him in defence? Why not just move him to midfield and focus on what he's good at?

Hi, Nick. Easier said than done and I’m not totally convinced he is a natural midfield player either.

Liverpool’s balance in midfield and elsewhere has been excellent this season, so it is perfectly natural Arne Slot has no wish to disrupt it.

I think right-back is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s only home in this current Liverpool team, so the coach must then weigh up his defensive weaknesses against his attacking qualities - and they have not done too badly so far this season.

I totally accept Alexander-Arnold is not a great defender but, at his best, he offers so many other things.

Also, we need to be careful not to go into a knee-jerk on the basis of one, admittedly very poor, performance.

Got to feel sorry for TAA. Massive rise, trophies, then suddenly he's a dodgy defender, everyone decides he's a midfielder so he deservedly gets a chance at the euros, 2 so-so games and he's back to being a defender where he has one bad game in an amazing run and suddenly he's useless again. Give the guy a break.

'Inconsistent refereeing one of the big problems'published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Steve, Kent: Hi Phil. How can consistency of refereeing decisions be improved in the Premier League? In two games, you'll see the same incident with different decisions!

Hi, Steve. The million dollar question. It is one of the big problems, with a discussion point this weekend around the handball in the build-up to Newcastle’s equaliser at Spurs and whether Dan Burn should have received a second yellow card for handball.

There still seems to be some variations in interpretations of the law and this is something for referees’ chief Howard Webb to address.
