Rick: Will the contract situation derail Liverpool's title charge? They should've beat Manchester United, but they were complacent and underestimated a poor United team, who put in a terrific performance, but still should've had enough to beat them. They all looked off it, start of a potential dip?

Hi Rick. I honestly don't think the contract situations involving Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will derail Liverpool's season - although Alexander-Arnold was so poor against Manchester United yesterday.

I just feel Liverpool are too experienced, talented and professional to let this happen. I think Arne Slot is right on top of this situation and when a team is playing so well and in such a great position, contracts will be the last thing on players' minds, although Alexander-Arnold needs to be back to his best quickly after yesterday.

  2. What did Trent do wrong against Man Utd?published at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

Alexander-Arnold's taken the heat for Liverpool's draw after he gave the ball away for Lisandro Martinez's opener and was out of position for Amad Diallo's equaliser. But, by Opta's metrics at least, the defender did not make a mistake that led to either of the goals.

Seven points dropped at home - Forest 1-0 attack from their left, Fulham 2-2; both goals coming from play down their left, Utd 2-2; both goals coming from play down their left. Is there a common theme?

After a week's worth of links to Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold could have done with a performance at Anfield on Sunday to quieten down some of the speculation.

But it was an afternoon to forget for the England defender as United created both of their goals down Alexander-Arnold's right hand side.Did the speculation affect his performance?

Some banging stats from Anfield last night.

    • Lisandro Martinez was the first Manchester United player to score at Anfield since Jesse Lingard in December 2018, ending the club's run of five successive Premier League visits without a goal away to Liverpool.
    • Amad Diallo is only the third Manchester United player to score away goals against both Manchester City and Liverpool in the same Premier League season, after Wayne Rooney in 2004-05 and Robin van Persie in 2012-13.
    • Liverpool have recovered 13 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, with only Manchester City (14) gaining more. Having only fallen behind in four of their first 13 league games under Arne Slot, the Reds have since trailed in four of their last six games.
    • Mohamed Salah has 18 goals and 13 assists in 19 Premier League games this season, which is the most goal involvements by a player in their first 19 appearances of a campaign in the competition ever, overtaking Luis Suarez's 30 in 2013-14 (23 goals and 7 assists).

Man Utd controlled tempo of game - Amorim

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, speaking to Sky Sports, said he was happy with the performance but furious his side have not played at the same level in all their matches.

He said: "The expectations [of the media] were so much different to what we saw. I get more mad because of the other games so it's even harder to understand some things. It's not about a system, the technique, it's about something else and it's hard to understand for the coach.

"It's a point and I think we should get mad and disappointed more than what we did against Newcastle."

To BBC Match of the Day he said: "Everybody thinks the same thing. We have to start someday to be consistent. Not in the way we play but in how we face the competition - so let's start today."

Are Liverpool this season in a similar place to where Man City were last season? Dominating the League but the core of the team ageing and might not be playing so much in 2025-26?

Frustration and emotions boiled over in Ange Postecoglou's post-match interview. The pressure is mounting on him.

There's the big question of his style of play, which I am a big fan of. I understand that if you are getting sacked, you want it by playing your way.

But Tottenham need that tiny level of game management and a bit of control by tweaking their tactics. It's not changing the tactics or going against your values.

But because he is being questioned, I feel like he is leaning even more towards not changing it.

Newcastle couldn't be going into their EFL Cup semi-final against Arsenal in better form.

The Magpies made it five wins on the bounce with victory against Spurs on Saturday, which came via goals from Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak.

It put Eddie Howe's side into 5th, with their Champions League hopes very much alive.

What a contrast with Spurs, who have won just one of their last five in the league.

There's alarm bells ringing for Chelsea. They had 15 attempts against Crystal Palace and only one on target. That is a big problem.

They are not finishing off teams which is worrying. They are too reliant on Cole Palmer.

Enzo Maresca was right and they were never in the title race, but we had to talk about them because of the position they were in.

But now you worry whether they can finish in the top four. I think they will and this is just a blip. But with the likes of Newcastle who are coming in full steam, it's going to be an interesting end to the season.

Enzo Maresca was keen to play down his side's title chances when they moved to within two points of the top with a 2-1 win against Brentford on 15 December.

But even he couldn't have foreseen a four-match winless run that has left the Blues 10 points behind Liverpool, having played a game more.

Cole Palmer gave Chelsea the lead at Selhurst Park on Saturday with his 13th league goal of the season, following a brilliant assist from Jadon Sancho but Palace found an equaliser eight minutes from time through Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Disappointment for Chelsea but more green shoots of recovery for Palace, who have picked up nine points from their last 15 and lost once.

"The team is creating for him, the team is playing in a really good way for Alex and others. Alex is playing his part in that by finishing them off but the team is playing great and creating the chances for him."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Sven Botman's return: "It's a combination, we have to speak to the player, the medical team, the experts. They'll give me some of the answers to what we do with him next. Sven is a competitor. He is hugely driven for the team and himself. He wants to do really well in his career so I've got no doubts what he will say, but we need to, as I said, speak to other people and try and come up with the right decision."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon who was substituted in the second half against Tottenham on Saturday: "Anthony was in a bit of discomfort, I would say. Only with the cut, which was a nasty looking one. Looking back at the decision, I thought it was a foul, I thought it was a clear penalty. He came away from that incident with blood on himself so we dusted him down. He went back on the pitch and performed really well for us. I thought he had a really good game, so we will see how he is today."

League Two side Tranmere were quick to offer a response on social media, posting a picture of their full-back Cameron Norman on X under the message: "Trent to Tranmere Roy? Nah, we're alright thanks."
