    FT: Liverpool 2-2 Man Utd

    Clinton Morrison
Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Football Daily

Ruben Amorim did say Manchester United were going to suffer and the fans have to realise it. This squad of players are not good enough.

But the manager has to take a bit of blame too because he has come in at United and he hasn't been getting the results.

But the way he set up the team against Liverpool was spot on though.

Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte were fantastic in the midfield. They have the legs and they've got to play in this formation. You can't play Christian Eriksen and Casemiro together. They got run all over against Newcastle.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes spoke to Sky Sports after last night's match.

"I'm pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can't we do this everywhere? It frustrates me," he said.

"Also, finally I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season. Being 2-1 [down] then scoring, it is good to get a point but we need more."

  5. What's next for Manchester United?published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Manchester United

For the first time since Ruben Amorim took over, Manchester United have a full week between fixtures.

Next up they take on Arsenal, away, in the third round of the FA Cup.

Then, it's home league matches against Southampton and Brighton before they host Rangers in the Europa League.

It was Ruben Amorim’s 12th match at Manchester United and his best day in the job yet.

And yes, I know they won at Manchester City but that had the feel of a freak turn-around against an at-the-time strangely fragile City. This was a point at Anfield against a Liverpool team at close to the peak of its powers.

Amorim gave another insight into what he’s all about by declaring afterwards that he was ‘the only guy’ at Anfield who was upset last night, i.e., where have performances like this been during their four-match losing streak?

His United team have now shown him the spirit and level he wants and his challenge to them with those words was to hit that level every match.

What’s interesting to us on the outside is to learn if this widely criticised squad of United players has that in them.

'Amorim has huge job to make United challengers'published at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty

Alex, Zurich: Hi Phil. When Erik ten Hag was in charge, Manchester United fans clamoured for an identifiable style of play. Now they have one under Ruben Amorim, I see complaints that he is stubborn in sticking to his preferred system without the right players. What do they want? And what should they go for?

Hello, Alex. Well, the system worked well at Liverpool yesterday. This was Manchester United’s best performance under Ruben Amorim.

It is clear he has his favoured formation and is sticking to it, while you had no idea what sort of team United were, or what identity they had, under Erik ten Haag.

I’m not convinced Amorim currently has the players to make the best of his three central defenders strategy but yesterday will have at least given him and his players belief he has something to build on.

I think summer will see him making serious inroads into getting the players to fit his system.

Let’s not be fooled by that excellent point at Liverpool, though. Amorim has got a huge job on his hands to make United anything like serious challengers but at least he has a clear idea.

TAA should go to Madrid. It's the pinnacle of a professional footballers career. It's broadens your cultural understanding. He's achieved everything at Liverpool and served them well. They should part ways on an amicable mutual understanding. Win the title go to Madrid with fans blessing.

'I could see Liverpool looking at Ait-Nouri and Kerkez'published at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Jim, London: Hi Phil, always enjoy reading your articles on BBC Sport. With all the fuss about the bad game Trent Alexander-Arnold had, is it being overlooked a little that on the other flank, Andy Robertson has really dropped off in recent months? Is it time for Liverpool to splash out on a new left back and if so, who?

Morning Jim. I do think we need to be careful not to go into a knee-jerk about Trent Alexander-Arnold's poor game yesterday but there is no doubt the timing was not great after Real Madrid officially declared their interest.

He was so far off the pace and careless, and was clearly exploited by Manchester United, who launched 54% of their attacks down his right flank. His stray pass led to Lisandro Martinez's first goal for United and Amad Diallo's equaliser also came down his flank.

Unfortunately for him and Liverpool, this will become an issue and a talking point as long as his future remains unclear.

He can put it right quickly with good performances, but for the first time yesterday, I heard the noises of frustration from Liverpool fans towards him - not a huge number but enough to make themselves heard.

Liverpool do not need this to escalate when they have such a great chance of making this a wonderful season under Arne Slot.

Meanwhile, agree about Andy Robertson. He has not been at his best this season and, while still a fine full-back, Liverpool will soon have to start looking to the future.

Wolves and Bournemouth fans won't like this, but Rayan Ait-Nouri and Milos Kerkez are two players I can see them looking at. Sorry Wolves and Cherries.

Of course Conor Bradley would be No.1 for that position. The lad would walk into any other team in the Prem. Every time he has been called upon he has looked absolute class. Nailed on Liverpool first teamer if Trent leaves.

'Everton almost unwatchable this season'published at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty

Barry, Bournemouth: Morning Phil. But for a last minute Fulham equaliser, Everton fans would be looking at tonight’s Wolves game wondering if we’d end the day sitting back in the relegation places. Another game without scoring, another 90 minutes without a shot on target. I know you’ve suggested before that you think Sean Dyche is the best person to see the club survive in the Premier League this season. Given the woeful performances this season and the fact that both Wolves and Ipswich seem to have some momentum behind them, do you think the new owners can risk waiting until the summer before making a change?

I stand by my original assertion that the ideal scenario for Everton's new owners would be for Sean Dyche to keep them safe until the end of his contract this season, then I feel sure they will make a change and bring their own manager in.

It is the "keep them safe" bit which is becoming the rogue in this equation as Ipswich Town and Wolves are showing real signs of picking up while Everton are dismal and have been almost unwatchable in games this season.

Three wins from 19 games is awful, while their lack of threat and goals is a serious concern, not just for supporters but surely for Dyche.

Everton simply must stay up this season with that new stadium on the horizon, Relegation is unthinkable for the new owners, so if they drop into the bottom three - or simply just continue to be as bad as they have been - then the Friedkin Group will have a very big decision to make.

As I said, relegation is unthinkable... although it will become very thinkable if Everton continue to perform as they are.

Quick question Liverpool fans, if Trent Alexander-Arnold was to leave the club, should Conor Bradley get that starting right-back spot, or would you rather the club find someone in the transfer market?

Good morning. TAA had a poor game, not helped by Mo needing to take occasional 'rests' during games and Konate returning from injury. Also, Dalot/Bruno were outstanding. Robbo gets a lot more defensive help from Gakpo or Diaz during games and it shows. TAA will know, performances like that are unacceptable in an LFC shirt and regardless of his future, will return to form quickly or lose his place in the starting line up to Bradley. Our May fixtures are Chelsea (a), Arsenal (h), Brighton (a), CP (h), last day. We are going to need all the current players firing and fit to even reach this point ahead and to then push hard for the title through a difficult looking run-in.

    Coley, always optimistic LFC fan!

We've still got so much to talking about. Over the next few hours we'll be chatting about the title race, is it back on?

We'll carry on discussing Manchester United and Liverpool's defensive woes.

Plus, we'll focus on Jack Grealish and Manchester City.

    Exciting!
