Slot is absolutely spot on, people are acting like Trent had a stinker against League 2 players. Yes United are out of form, but Dalot and Fernandes are starters for the 6th best international team in the world. Dalot was superb yesterday and would have given the best of defensive full-backs a tough game. Trent not being the best defensively is no myth and if anything, Dalot's performance gives teams a lot of encouragement when playing Liverpool in the months ahead. This could become a problem for Liverpool and they need to weigh up how much of a difference Trent makes between now and the end of the season, is he going to be the difference between winning the title or not? Absolutely not. For me, sell now, start Bradley and bring in a decent defensive minded full-back as cover for the rest of the season.

    FT: Liverpool 2-2 Man Utd

    Clinton Morrison
Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Football Daily

If I was Joshua Zirkzee, I was subbed after half an hour in the previous game and I am in on goal, I am not squaring it to Harry Maguire.

I would put my hand up after and apologise saying I didn't see him.

My eyes will be firmly placed on putting it hard and low past Alisson into that bottom corner. Then it's a bit of redemption for me. I can run over to the fans and celebrate because I just scored the winner against Liverpool.

In that situation, it was terrible and the pass to Maguire was outrageous as well.

  4. 'Genuine thriller'published at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    FT: Liverpool 2-2 Man Utd

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on 5 Live Breakfast

In those final minutes as well, when it was 2-2 and they really went at each other and [Virgil] Van Dijk had the header at one end and [Harry] Maguire with the late chance, it was a genuine thriller.

Arne Slot acknowledge that it is a two point drop for them, I thought they [Liverpool] played well and I think there were two sides to the story while they played well. But they were going such great guns, weren't they, coming into that match with the performances and wins that they have had.

But I think that's half the story, the other half is the fact that Manchester United put in the performance that they did which I think gave Ruben Amorim, they've won under him at Manchester City, but I think that had more of a feel of a freak turn around against a at-the-time, strangely fragile Manchester City. He got the performance he wanted yesterday and I think you got an insight to what Ruben Amorim is about.

    Oh, Harry.

Manchester United fans would have snapped your hand off for a point against Liverpool before a ball was kicked at Anfield yesterday.

But with twenty seconds left of the seven additional minutes of added time, United had the chance to snatch all three points when Joshua Zirkzee was through on goal.

The Dutchman opted to square the ball to Maguire and the defender skied his effort over the bar, with the Liverpool goal at his mercy.

Should Zirkzee have gone for goal himself or should Maguire have buried it?

Those piling on Trent are your typical plastic fan, only coming out to bash when something doesn’t go their way. Defensively Trent has been superb this season but that never gets talked about because it doesn’t fit the popular narrative. Everyone has an off game, plus Trent was isolated 2 on 1 a lot and anyone is going to struggle with that. That’s more down to other players not helping him than his performance. This won’t get published.

Liverpool have benefited from the demise of Manchester City and Arsenal this season, but they've got better.

Jurgen Klopp left a really good squad for Arne Slot to take over. But no one expected the players to react the way they have and be in the position they are in the Premier League right now.

Slot has brought an air of control to their play, going forward especially, and they are still getting better.

Ryan Gravenberch has really emerged this season. Slot has also found the right balance of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

Trent Alexander-Arnold did not have the best of games against Manchester United, but did his performance justify the heavy criticism he has received on social media and from pundits since?

Alexander-Arnold was dribbled past just twice despite more than half of United's attacks going through his side while Opta also confirmed he recorded no errors leading to a shot, let alone a goal.

The big issue for the Liverpool player was that he lost all five of his duels in the match.

He completed 76.67% of his 60 passes and created a chance, taking him to 37 for the campaign, with Ipswich's Leif Davis the only defender ahead of him in that category.

Only Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer and Mohamed Salah can better his 12 big chances created in the Premier League this season, although he did not add to his tally in this game.

Let's return to Trent Alexander-Arnold who has rarely been out of the headlines this week.

If it's not for Real Madrid's ongoing interest in the Liverpool full-back amid an uncertain future, it's for his creative brilliance - or his perceived defensive deficiencies.

On Sunday, it was undoubtedly the latter.

The 26-year-old had an afternoon to forget as leaders Liverpool were fortunate to escape Anfield with a 2-2 draw against 14th-placed Manchester United.

After being given a torrid afternoon by Diogo Dalot and replaced by Conor Bradley in the 86th minute, he was heavily criticised on social media and by several pundits.

Former United captain Roy Keane told Sky Sports: "There's talk about him going to Real Madrid, the way he's defending he's going to Tranmere Rovers after this. He's got to do better.

"We talk about how brilliant Trent is going forward, but Trent's defending today; my goodness it's like schoolboy stuff."

A big welcome to everyone who's just opened up our page.

There's so much to get through today. Right now we're focusing on Liverpool 2-2 Manchester United.

Did Trent Alexander-Arnold have an off-day, or was he exposed by his team-mates?

Was that Manchester United's best performance under Ruben Amorim?

And what do dropped points mean for the title race?

I personally think the league table flatters Liverpool a little bit (they’ve had to scrap a few comeback wins or draws which they probably didn’t deserve) Their blip is still to come, especially if Mo has some off days or gets injured. I expect it’ll be a 3-4 point gap or less by March and the title race will go down to the wire. That is why fans are moaning at Trent - games like yesterday are ones we should be winning to cover the losses or draws that will inevitably come later on in the season.

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on BBC Football Daily

Defending has never been Trent Alexander-Arnold's strong point. What he can give you going forward is better than what he can do the other way.

We are in January now. He will be a free agent at the end of the season and clubs can contact him. Who knows what has arrived in his inbox and he could be mulling things over.

It's really difficult because I'm sure he will be trying to do his best when he puts on that Liverpool shirt. But when your future is uncertain, it can have a negative effect on how you play.

I don't know what he was doing against Manchester United. It looked like his head could have been elsewhere.

Liverpool will want to get it resolved as soon as possible.

As an Arsenal fan, I have to say I’m extremely disappointed with our performance against Brighton. Nothing against Brighton, they are a good team. But Arsenal should be winning these fixtures to keep the pressure on Liverpool. I don’t think we’ve improved in the past three years, our squad isn’t as good as it should be for the amount of money spent and our tactics are predictable and ineffective. Arteta out? I think if we don’t win a trophy this year it is time for a change.
